Rising Australian star Jimbo Cazyer aka Jaytech speaks with TranceTribe about his life, career and a possible new label.
At the age of 17 Jaytech released his first tune, now 4 years on hes internationally recognised as one of the biggest progressive, house and breaks producers in Australia. Having his tunes featured on Tiestos In Search Of Sunrise 5 and Dave Seamans Renaissance 7, it seems like his career is only just beginning. It's been a pretty nuts year all round, really! Jimbo replies, telling me how the most exciting thing for him this year has been the opportunity to travel around not only doing Dj sets, but also doing his live stage act. To have people respond in such a positive way [to your music] is a great feeling.
Jaytech stepped onto the producers road at the young age of 14, influenced by local underage parties he set to work to create his own sounds, The most popular dance music in Canberra around the time that I started wasn't too dissimilar to the stuff I'm doing nowadays! Jimbo goes on to explain how the sounds of Progressive, House and Breaks have all but disappeared in Canberra and the crowds taste has changed. Like many other Australian producers Jimbo had to get his name recognised before people would listen to his demos. I used to send CDs out to labels or send MP3s out through label websites. I generally didn't get any response whatsoever, but in 2004 his luck turned around when Blu-Room Records picked up his tune Music 101 and gave it a chance releasing it on their sub-label Blu-Room UK. The following year the sister label Keypad Recordings released Jimbos second tune Innerminds. Sadly, a while after the Blu-Room guys disappeared, never to be heard from again, but before they vanished from the industry they made people start to take notice of my work, so I am indebted to them for that.
Jimbo admits that since his first release My tastes have certainly "Grown up" a bit... Listening to any of his songs its easy to understand that his songs are not just about a groove or repeated riff, but they really try and tell you a story. Like any committed artist he explains how he always wants to learn the new techniques and better his sound, hopefully the stuff I'm doing now will pale in comparison to the stuff I'm doing in two years. When Jaytech began producing the sentiment in the community about making entire tracks on computer would have been an absurd concept, learning all about producing back then was all about trial and error he tells me. Beginning with ACID pro then moving onto Audio Logic and now settling on Ableton has been a long path for Jaytech, As a result of changing software, my methods of production have changed quite a bit but I'm really comfortable with the setup I'm using now.
The tune thats really put Jaytechs name on the map would be Tomorrow, which was co-produced with Matt Rowan and featured on Dave Seamans newest Renaissance. I met Matt at a party that my good friend Ruth (DJ Artemis) put on here in Canberra. Ruth later suggested that we play a few interstate gigs together on a bit of a mini-tour, which we did last year. Doing back to back gigs and working on many more productions he tells me how the internet has allowed for them to work on new tunes without being in the studio together, I'm in Sydney so often nowadays it doesn't really feel like we live in different cities anyway! And if youve ever wondered what Tomorrow means to Jimbo, its a song about long walks on the beach, fairies and butterflies. It's that moment in E.T. when Elliot and E.T touch fingers, and it also means the start of a beautiful friendship for both of us, I think. Aww! While on tour in Australia Nick Warren (Boss of Hope Recordings, which released Tomorrow) met up with the boys to talk shop, the result was something that flabbergasted the both of them. It certainly gave us a bit of strive to take things even further.
The other big tune many may know Jaytech for is Identify Me, which he co-produced with Ministry of Sound DJ, Mark Dynamix. With plenty more tunes in the works, some even featuring on Marks new mix for MOS, Jaytech reveals that theres at least another two singles coming soon and even remixes on the horizon. Though with Marks busy schedule its inevitable that theyre production time together is limited however, we're getting together in September to work on these releases so you'll be hearing some more stuff from us soon!
Trance enthusiasts may be pondering where theyve heard the name Jaytech before, the most likely answer is his song Genesis which featured on Dj Tiestos most recent In Search Of Sunrise CD, and was a special Afterburner Mix especially made for the CD. Tiesto liked the track, but it wasn't upbeat enough to fit into the mix, so I did a Trancier take on it. I had a very limited timeframe to work with on that one so the coffee was flowing that night! Fortunately the mix was made just in time for the CD and as a result Tiesto signed a special copy for Jimbo to thank him for the remix and for those who are after the Afterburner Mix, Jaytech explained that it is indeed getting a release with a House mix very soon.
Not content with just being a Dj and Producer, Jimbo does his very own Live Stage Acts which involve a lot of different elements, which display the ways in which he can create and manipulate sound live. Writing an hour live show is essentially like writing an album, and my live work is quite different to my studio productions, so I guess coming to see me live shows a different side of my music from what most people are used to and with the new version of Ableton coming soon its become an invaluable performing tool as well.
Many producers and Djs out there have complex ideas, morals or stories behind their aliass The simplest way to explain Jaytech is that its not his original moniker, Jimb0! and yes, that's with both a zero and an exclamation mark, so "Jaytech" is a definite improvement, I think, Jimbo tells me. With Jaytechs rising success in the EDM scene, it seems that inevitably producing may become a full time job for him, although that only really starts happening when you start touring on a regular basis, start doing music for films and television, or start writing tracks with a larger commercial appeal. On the subject of other producers who move overseas for greater musical opportunities, Jaytech seems like a real testament to the fact that you can live in a town that has no market for your kind of music and still do well through the internet.
In the modernisation of music its definitely become easier to start up your own small label for whatever the reason and it seems like the newest addition will be Jaytechs label Red Seven Records, which is launching this September both digitally and on vinyl. my intentions behind Red Seven are purely to release my own tracks and the tracks of people that I work with. Jimbo explains that while he releases on other labels, Red Seven will be the outlet on which he can really control his music, It's not going to make me squillions of dollars, but it's a worthwhile venture and helps towards the greater goal of world domination!
Recently turning 21, it seems like Jimbos career has just begun, but whats on the horizon? Well incredibly he has at least one track per month getting released until February 2007 and also a new remix of one of Hybrids new songs. Matt Rowan and I will be jetting overseas soon, with two separate overseas tours being organised at present. Crazy times ahead for sure!

From Flippy: ITM.
--------------------------
just imagine it...
you open your eyes.
darkness.
for a moment, all you can hear or see is confusion.
you dont know what just happened.
you dont know where you are.
instantly your heartrate starts rising.
then before you have time to think, a green laser quickly sweeps across the side wall in front of you.
but only for a split second.
you take a hesitant step forward as a soft mumbling beat wafts toward you as if from nowhere.
another step.
another quick flash of green.
the beat gets louder.
the green laser pierces the dark hallway you're standing in.
you make your way closer.
the beat gets clearer.
you reach a doorway just as the laser pierces your vision.
you shield your eyes as the laser shoots away again.
...then you step through the doorway.
people everywhere.
dancing, drinking, smiling and laughing.
hands are up in the air, people are whistling and screaming for more.
laughs can be seen but not heard.
the music is driving and incredible.
you feel as if you've stepped into another world.
the laser blankets the room and the showers the crowd of clubbers in green.
the DJ stands sillohetted behind the decks, punching the air with the crowd as each beat rips through the green-stained cavernous trove that is laid out in front of you.
you've entered brown alley.

Interview is now your home!
