Well, it's good to hear Sonic addressing the situation.
Word at the club on friday was that the club hadn't got license for the event and that was trhe reason for the mess. Since I hadn't heard anything official from Sonic, I made my comment based on that -incorrect- assumption. And believe me, I'm a regular at Sonic and it's hands down the best club in Toronto, and would love it for it to remain that way.

I also happen to be gay. I went to the friday open to support the club (and paid the $10) on their new venture. I wouldn't have gone otherwise because the DJ line up was just not my thing, but once there I had to listen to them. I dont care much about mixing skills because i care more about selection. I think if a DJ is not making any mistakes he must not be taking chances, experimenting. We cant expect a Dj to be a perfect metronome. But their music selection was not right. They tried too hard to bring the crowd too high too fast, no build up no groove. It was also an opening night, should be more especial, more about making the crowd welcome and warm. But not all DJs get it. The last DJ's final half hour was ok. I guess it was too late, I understand all the drama with the opening. For DJ's my suggestion would be to look at the line up of a gay club in Montreal called PARKING. Awesome DJs any night. All kinds of sounds, house, tribal, deep, electrohouse. VARIETY.

The gay crowd that has been attended Sonic since opening goes there because of the music and the party, they been there every weekend despite the fact there were no drag shows, no gogo dancers, no shower-shows, porn stars and whatever else has been advertised for the days to come. No need to be condescending. The Church street scene is tired and we need a change. Don't bring all those tried formulas again. Do something fresh. There's a very vibrant art scene in Toronto, bring performers who can bring things to a different level.
No need to bring a "sexy" factor with muscled
dancers. If music is sexy, we will all get into it.

The gay clubbing experience has always been very sophisticated and cutting-edge: most talented dj's have flourished in this environment: Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, etc. so don't be afraid to try out and challenge your customers. If you need to raise the cover for a talented DJ, most people won't have a problem with it, trust me.

And thanks for booking Victor Calderone and Stephan Grondin for this month, both residents at Stereo and some of the best DJs that the US and Canada have. Stephan has a great gay following in Toronto also and if he should be a monthly resident. Danny Torrence is another name. Hex Hector, Junior Vasquez, Peter Rauhofer, Chus & Ceballos, Ralphi Rosario, DJ Abel, Danny Tenaglia and of course David Morales. All these DJs have big gay following and will pack the place every time. But also try different names, use your best judgement.

Queens are fiercely loyal: If you make this party work, the club will make a lot of money and we all will be happy. But it would be nice to see the club is making an effort and trying something fresh, OPEN.

I really am excited for the opening of a new night at Sonic. I have always loved going on Saturdays because of the great crowd and the devastating music. I'm not quite sure if there have ever been more DJs in town that I wanted to see since it opened, and now with a new night it's like, double your pleasure For those who only feel comfortable going out to a night geared for one sexual preference or another, there will still be a night to go out, and for all those for whom it doesn't really matter, the booking schedule just doubled
