And why is Larry Levan considered the best DJ ever if he really didn't mix all that much? Track selection!

Posted by jahnlay on Dec-07-2006 21:41:

and programming

Don't get me wrong overall I really liked the mix, but I have heard better from him since.

PS. I have some mixes for download in the DJ promotion thread. They're of my radio show (2hr each show) and are only at 64KBps, but they journey from progressive to minimal on each show and I'd really like some opinions from you guys:

I'll check it out...are these done in Live?

Posted by jahnlay on Dec-07-2006 22:05:

Yes, I've been using Live for 3 years already, both for production and djing.

Posted by Zild on Dec-07-2006 22:09:

I'm just getting into Live myself. I've done a few mixes, but nothing too technical. I'm still trying to get myself sorted.

Posted by jahnlay on Dec-07-2006 22:12:

Well holler if you need any help, I know it backwards and lecture and give training on it.

Posted by Zild on Dec-07-2006 22:12:

Nice I'll definitely take you up on that.

Sorry, but going to a music store and picking out music doesn't make an "amazing" DJ. There are many more factors, obviously.

Maybe you're talking about producers or something, but I'm talking about people who play other people's music. They're called DJs. And there is alot more to track selection and programming than just going into a store and picking out music. Like I said. Not everyone understands.

Yes, I was stating that if a track selection consists of not only great tracks, but ORIGINAL tracks then that DJ could be considered "amazing". All I'M saying is that it takes track selection AND mixing skills to be considered an "amazing" DJ. Track selection alone can make a "good" DJ, but if he can not mix, he will never be considered "amazing" in my book. How am I totally off with these statements?
I guess you don't understand.

Remember, I am quoting the word "amazing" that was used originally for the title of this thread. After stating Sasha's track selection, he also mentioned his mixing skills, which I agree would make a DJ "amazing".

Posted by Zild on Dec-07-2006 23:08:

All I did was agree with the others who said track selection > technical skills.

I don't know where you're getting all that extraneous shit from because I never said anything about amazing thats you. Also you're assuming I give a fuck about the original post. I don't.

Well, whoop-a-dee-doo-da.

PLUR

Actually its, "You better start showing some peace, love, and respect or I'm going to break your fucking faces." PLUR is just so limp wristed

Back to what I was saying. Any DJ worth his salt knows that track selection is so much more important than technical skills. That isn't to say DJs should not have technical skills because they most definitely should. Not everyone understand that though.

Anything before 2001 basically. I am particularly fond of the Gatecrasher NYE set, 31-12-99 - for sentimental reasons. Get that first, follwed by Zen After Party (Miami, United States) June 1996.

YES!

I think the years 99-2001 basically play a part in the best years of all genres

Including rock and rap imo

So THAT'S where we got off to the wrong start lol

You were talking about it being more important, and I was saying that it alone does not work.

And yes, I was being very sarcastic with plur.

A bit thick headed aren't you? I never said anything about Sasha being the first person to discover Ableton, it's just he started using it differently which let many others find out (including me) about program.

He still plays what he wants (and recently is in top form, ask anyone who has been to a gig of his recently) and does what he wants with the music, no matter what people say.

At the end of the day, there will be people who like and people who don't. There's no changing that.
