Does anyone know the track that he played directly after Aftermath? What about the 2nd last song of the set (it's in geroin's vid). Those two were the tracks of the night for me.
Awaiting Karlo's trainspotting magic...
Review to come later.

Months ago when this party first got announced and everyone still wanted to go to sonic, I was thinking of going to this party by myself, then President Grinder decided he wanted to go, and one by one more and more people wanted to go, and sooner or later all of my favourite people ended up going.
This made me even more excited to go to a party I was already excited to go to.
I decided to pick up my level of excitement after I got a poster for the event plaqued to put up on my wall and NuEra pointed out that it would be a real shame if the party sucked and i then had a reminder of a bad party on my wall.
So all things combined, I was very excited and hoped to not be let down.
And as high as my excitement and expectations were, this party surpassed both of them.
The crowd was great, not This Is London typical, in fact I recognized most people from the zone earlier in the day. It was not overly crowded at all.
Lawler started out his set perfectly, dropped it down with some slow, groovy tunes. Usually I would not like stuff that slow, but it just seemed perfect for the night.
Then he built up from there, peppering his set with a mix of many tunes I had never heard before, and some older tunes as well, I don't care how many times I hear it Hugs n Kisses is still awesome.
Then the end of his set was pure magic, every tune was epic, exactly my style of house music, Shelley put it right when she said "any more and I think my head will explode!"
I'm betting this is the party of the year, and it happened on the first day!
Thanks Steve Lawler for the head exploding set, awesomeness of a new level.
Also, on an additional note to add to how good this night was, got a chance to meet both Nathan Barato and Addy, and was absoultely blown away by their niceness and how down to earth each of them were. Absolute class acts.
Great freakin' party. I couldn't have asked for anything more.
I'll give a proper review later & post some pics. I'm still recovering.
It was great to see everyone. I love you all
And as always, thanks for the hospitality Josh.
i hope you appreciate this, i want to go to bed... zzzzzzzzz

I was pushy.
I'm so glad I decided to go out for this. Lawler definitely delivered. Deko-ze was awesome too. It got a bit squishy at the front of the dance floor at times but it was bearable. Crowd was friendly too. So glad to see a good group of TAs in attendance, some I haven't seem in ages! This was definitely my best experience at TiL. Mushy, you were missed.
crazy night as always with Lawler.. This is london was amazing. It was my first time their.. a ton of hot girls and slamming beats.. the best new years I have had in a while.
New Year's Day 2007 was a great day. I knew the party was going to be good, but it was better than I expected.
We arrived at about 8pm in an attempt to avoid a massive line. To our surprise, the line wasn't that long, and we got in very quickly. I noticed the door staff was very courteous and friendly. This gets a huge thumbs up from me. As a customer, it's nice being treated with respect.
We were one of the first groups of people inside the club, which I usually don't like, but this time it was perfect. Since the music was a little bit more chill, and played at a lower level, it gave lots of time to lounge and talk before getting down to really partying. Now that I think about it, I wish this happened more often.
Since I saw all of the opening acts at CZ during the day, and since I wanted to socialize, I didn't really pay too much attention to the DJs that played before Lawler. However, from what I heard, I enjoyed them all, especially Manzone & Strong. I'm usually not the biggest fan of them at This is London, but they surprised me this time around.
When Lawler hit the decks, the crowd lost it just like a Toronto crowd does upon seeing Mr. Lights Out appear in the booth. I was excited to hear his opening track since crazy intros is what Lawler is known for. This time however, the opening track wasn't as good as other times I had seen him, but it set the stage quite well.
A lot of you have mentioned that you didn't like how Lawler started off slow. I guess it was a bit of a shock after there had been 5 hours of DJs playing already, and since Nathan didn't really end off on a slow note, but to me, this is the biggest reason I like Lawler: his programming. He starts off slow, and builds you up to a "head-exploding" point, and then brings you back down. Lawler did exactly this, with tunes like Chiapet - Westworld, which I was pretty surprised and glad that he played. It took him about 45 minutes or so to warm up, and then he started hammering out the tunes.
I decided that it was time to brave the front of the club. I was rocking out to regular Lawler madness, when all of a sudden he dropped Criss Source - Hugs N' Kisses and then Pryda - Aftermath immediately after. Lawler really needs to stop playing Hugs N' Kisses, and although I like Aftermath, playing it right after is pretty cheesey. I don't know what he was thinking. Maybe he saw the look of disgust on my face (lol) because he played one of two track of the nights for me right after Aftermath. It's really hard to describe the track. It is a classic Lawler sounding tune, but I've never heard it before. I'd love to get an ID of this tune.
After this, Lawler started dropping a few minimal tracks, and after a bit more dancing, my battered legs needed a bit of a break. I went up stairs and chilled out for a bit. At this point, I stopped paying a lot of attention to the set as I was chatting, but I remember tuning out in mid-conversation because of crazy tune that was playing (sorry Lisa!
)
I stopped chatting and went flying out of my seat when I heard that Silence remix. I went downstairs to dance to the last few tracks of his set, one of which was Ernest Saint Laurent - Do Ya Dub. This was my other favourite track of the set.
Now I know a lot of you are going to think I'm being pretty critical, but this was my 7th or 8th time seeing Lawler, so the bar is set pretty high. Lawler's set had moments of awesomeness, but also a few moments of dissapointment. He played a lot of older tracks which is not something I would expect from Lawler. He did however do his job by facilitating an AWESOME NYD party.
Although most of my friends left after Lawler, I wanted to stick around for Deko-ze because I had not heard him play in quite some time, and knew he we were in for a treat. I was expecting the first track he dropped to be a techy or tribal track, but I was very surprised and happy to hear a really jazzy house track being played. After that, I was hoping for a jazzy set. Although he didn't play a jazzy set, he did a good job of using up all remaining energy I had in my body. Thanks Andrea for forcing me to stay.
The party itself was incredible. I was a bit worried about the fact that it would be too packed, and I didn't really think the crowd would be *that* up for it, but boy was I ever wrong. New Year's Day parties fucking rock.
I only really have two complaints about the party:
- The lights. I'm sorry, but these were just waaaaaay too much. Number one, lazers do NOT suit This is London. Secondly, the seizure inducing strobe lights made me have to hang around the fringes of the dance floor in fear of passing out at any given moment. It's rare when I actually wish I brought sunglasses to a club.
- Papparazzi photography. I understand why there are a lot of photographers at This is London snapping pictures on a regular Friday night, but it really isn't necessary or wanted to have people who work for websites flashing cameras in your face wherever you turn at 3am on NYD night. People aren't looking their best at this time. It's a little bit hard to concentrate on the party when you have photographers flashing at the front of the DJ booth in your direction for literally half an hour. The reason why this is a problem is because when these photographers take crowd shots, you could be in a picture, which will be posted on a website without your consent.
I know I'm probably going to get attacked for that last point, but don't misunderstand me. I don't mind pictures being taken at all, but the photography was a bit overboard given the kind of party that was going on.
Besides those two minor gripes I had with the party, I had, and pretty much everyone I talked to had an amazing time at This is London on New Year's Day. Thanks to the club, the staff, and everyone else involved for a top-notch party.

| Originally posted by musicsnob_NOT I remember you talking to me about this when we were in the front of the club, it seemed as if he took a lot of pictures in our general direction. I thought it was funny since you have never seen a camera you didn't like. I actually just went through all of the pictures that guy took and you weren't in that many and your hat helped a lot. I on the other hand - well I wish he wasn't taking them. So I agree, take pictures of people who are willing to pose for you, but not just general crowd shots where you can make out faces. |
