I think the Australian middle school curse went along the lines of 'throwing a sausage down a hallway'

Immensely crass...

"just play it straight"..and then you continue on to tell me to "play hard ball" until she get the hint, as opposed to just being brutally honest and telling her that i didn't have time, nor did i want to MAKE time, to rekindle my friendship with her. it doesn't get more "straight up" than that as far as i'm concerned.

give it to her straight = say what you think
play hard ball = insisting on what you think

You made it sound like she might not let you off the hook so easily so you will have to stick to your guns.

I guess you just didn't understand how I was coming across

I'm gonna need specific details about this in order to answer your question

Really though, from what you said this seems like one of those cases where too much has happened for you to ever be good friends again, and if you don't even live in the same state anymore what is the point in trying. She has probably finally matured a little and is probably feeling bad about how she treated you and is looking for some kind of validation from you that everything is ok.

Don't feel like you have to give it to her, just say that you are in different places in your lives and too much has happened in the past for you to ever be close friends again. You can't force yourself to be friends with someone you dont want to be friends with, its not gonna work out.
