OCEANIA, the smallest continent, is one of the most diverse and fascinating areas on the planet.

A large percentage of geography experts now consider the long-established continent of Australia to be more accurately defined as Australia/Oceania.

Collectively it then combines all of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, as well as the thousands of coral atolls and volcanic islands of the South Pacific Ocean, including the Melanesia and Polynesia groups.

Oceania also includes Micronesia, a widely scattered group of islands that run along the northern and southern edges of the Equator.

Or something like that!

cheers deeman! ive always preferred the name oceania anyway, sounds way cooler

Posted by Deeman on Feb-09-2007 02:18:

Hehehe yeah does mean we can now claim all the brilliant little pacific islands in the sun? If not, there's always honest genocide!

I've got no idea, but I'm sure that Philby would know. Hopefully he uses the phrase "techtonic shift" in his answer because there's probably nothing I like reading about more than techtonic shift.

In geology, Australia (also called Australia-New Guinea, Sahul, Meganesia, Greater Australia or Australinea) is a continent comprising (in order of size) the Australian mainland, New Guinea, Tasmania, and intervening islands, all of which sit on the same continental shelf. These landmasses are separated by seas overlying the continental shelf the Arafura Sea and Torres Strait between Australia and New Guinea, and Bass Strait between mainland Australia and Tasmania.

New Zealand is not on the same continental shelf and so is not part of the continent of Australia but is part of the wider region known as Australasia.

If you really want it to change, hows this for an idea?
You guys actually contribute rather than just a whinge thread, this will display WHY it should be Aus/NZ.

So, go down to this forum...
Site Suggestions
You start a poll, its a little option under everything else when you start a new thread.

Rename Australia Forum to Au/Nz?
Yes
No

(I havent lost any of you at this point have I? I can type slower if youre having trouble keeping up)

And then you do what myself and a couple of others did back in 2001 or whenever the hell it was, and start whinging a lot for about a month until we got what we wanted.

Newbs!

+ 1

I don't see the big deal

Posted by Camwin on Feb-11-2007 05:57:

I reckon Oceania or Pacific would fit best.
But i guess Samoa or Fiji don't exactly have dance parties do they?

Plus, i don't frequent this part of the forum because it's not for Kiwi's (technically) so how was i to know they posted NZ events in here when it's a forum for Aussies.

Label it differently so kiwi's can have a go too.

Posted by Philby on Feb-12-2007 05:34:

mmmm tectonics

here you can see a map detailing the outline of the tectonic plates on earth. as you can see new zealand is sort of fucked up on the boundary of the australian and the pacific plate. so you could sort of say it is part of australia if you wanted to in that sense the pacific plate is being subducted westwards underneath the australian plate causing volcanic activity and earthquakes. you could say this is tectonic shift, there you go mr renegade

i'm not 100% sure but i think new zealand was never part of the "mainland" of australia, even when we were part of gondwana. i think NZ was still outboard of the mainland, part of a volcanic arc offshore. i could be wrong though
