forget about any 600 sportsbike...
Just picture that scene in the matrix.. your the one Neo, ladi da n all that shit.. when Morpheous asks Neo to jump across to the other building.. which he fails. "everyone falls the first time"
don't be naive & think your special & that it won't happen to you, you may turn out good in time, but everyone has to start from the bottom.

GET A 2-Fiddy cc. It will keep you more than happy till you gain experience. 250's are still quicker than at least 80% of cars on the road... they just don't have the top end speed.. mine still cracks 200kph no worries though.. but the average 600 will do that in 3rd gear (maybe 2nd :P)

The thing is (at least in the US) 2 strokes arent available anymore.

Well i've been reading all these replies and i agree with some and disagree with others. Yes a SV or an EX500 is more forgiving but in my experience its the rider not the bike. If you ride like an idiot you'll eat pavement whether it's on a liter bike or a Ninja 250. I started out on a 600cc as did all my friends and the only accident i've ever had was lowsiding at 10mph because i got caught in the rain and hit the rear brake a little too much and locked the rear tire. Of all the accidents i've heard it's always because the rider was doing something stupid, running a red light, excessive speed. Yes a 600cc will get you going a lot quicker but in fairness its only about a 20-25ish hp difference than a SV. After you get your license if you know anyone with a 600cc ask to borrow there's and see how you feel on it.

the horsepower is not much different yes i agree but you fail to mention or potentially realize the gearing, the tuning, and all the aspects of the performance is SOOOO SOOOO different.

I realize the SV is a standard while the 600cc is a actual sportbike and what goes along with that classification. You can wreck just as easily on both. Like i said i think it's more about the rider than the bike. If you can honestly say that you'll take it slow in the beginning and respect the power of the 600 then go for it. Wear your gear and have fun.

I agree, that there are 4 stoke 250...but gutless for freeway use.

Also agree that an SV vs. a current 600 ninja are night and day. Yes you can pull "its the rider" card, but judging by the posters responces...he will hurt himself. I get the impression that he wants it for status and not the actual ride. There is always exceptions to the rule. He seems like like he wont respect a 600 sportbike and end up on his ass...if hes lucky. Sv's are a inbetween sportbike. Its the twitchyness that will do him in. He needs to really study how these work....like oversteering and what to do if it gets loose. Car driving instinct says to brake in a panic situation....on a bike will put you in trouble. Grab a handful of brake and you will earn a catscan.

Most bikes will fill the speed need, so no need to overkill on the type of bike. Granted, if you want to act like an ass..a 250 will kill you just as fast as a litre bike.

Also, you're saying 20-25 hp isn't a big difference. It's not when you're in a car, but when you're literally sitting on an extra 20 horse power you can definitely feel that. I don't ride a bike and I can tell you that.

i do agree that you can wreck just as easy on both and it is about the rider. your totally right. stupid people get on bikes all the time and wreck them doing just that. stupid things.

Straight up....even a 2hp gain is noticable. There is also center of gravity/riding position that will change the attitude of the bike. There are a few variables that really change the ride like gearing.

You were looking at panydropper werent you? You can get a used SV for 3500 easy.

Posted by bas on Feb-15-2007 03:46:

Also this guy weighs 140 pounds, with an extra 25 hp I'm pretty sure the bike will flip out from under him as soon as he opens the throttle.

And be on his tippytoes at stoplights...too much to start on. Unless he has the "fear/respect"...he will be a statistic.

If you look at the chart you'll realize that the SV is only about 2 seconds slower in the quarter mile then the ZX-6R for example. I realize that 20hp is definately a difference. I felt it when i rode my buddies SV.

Their out there, but don't look at dealers for a used bike. If you have some local motorcycle forums ppl usually post up realistic prices on there. or check out www.sportbikes.net or www.stuntlife.com although stuntlife is more geared towards stunt riding and you won't find as many minty bikes as you would on the other sites.

Thats a straight line...not really "realworld" situations. Lean into a turn and hit some condensation from A/C from the car that was in front of you and see what happens with a new rider. Same with a damp road going over painted lines in the road. It only takes a second for it to get away from you.

Posted by rktyr on Feb-15-2007 04:00:

I can tell i'm fighting an uphill battle with the rest of you guys on here so i'll just say after you get your m-class go with what you can afford and respect the power of the bike and you'll have a great time.
