-- How did you learn what you know?
Pages (3): « 1 2 [3]
If you think that I'm approaching 36 this summer.
Been a DJ since I was 14.
Played Guitar and drums since I was 17
And been messing around with Floops for about 4 years.
From picking up floops to getting signed took me about 4 years in total. But I have my music knowledge of past songwriting experiences to thank for the transition.
I have learnt things from this forum, mainly from back in the day when you had a lot of guys who went pro here. Sadly you don't see enough of them but I understand why. Basicallly when you start producing for labels it starts to eat up your time not to mention that you can't share the music. You still have some great talent here though and people still make some very valid comments.
I also thank Computer music magazine which has taught me stacks about mixdowns and mastering.
The point is that trial and error isn't simply enough but it is a great way of getting ideas. Ultimately there still has to be some method to your madness and reading as much as you can is hihgly recomended.
Cheers
Nem
EDIT-
I'm in my mid 30's and I still can't fecking spell!

| Originally posted by Mr.Mystery I've never read a single tutorial in my life and I don't plan to either (well, it'd be a bit pointless now anyway but you get my drift). It's just frustrating as hell and doesn't seem to get me anywhere - that's why I never particularily enjoyed school either. I need to get my hands on things, I've always learned much quicker that way. Then again I've always been lucky enough to be able to collaborate with a lot of talented people and seeing how they have worked has helped me quite a lot. I made a huge leap forward after teaming up with Mart, not necessarily because he was more technically advanced but because his ideas were so different to mine. |
When I started making music, i actually thought the tempo of the track changed during the build up and climax, and my tracks went to like from 130-140 BPM. not until a DJ actually told me: "hey, whats with your track, it changes speed, tracks dont change speed, dude."
I also remember fiddling with the kick and hats until i realised, the hats were to be placed in the middle.
Haha, that was a long time ago, but.. everything i learned I tought myself, and by listening to others.
I`ve tried reading alot of tutorials and stuff, about alot of things, It just dont stick to my head. Trial, terror and tips, thats the way to go!
Although, what i wished more than anything, would have been piano training, and being able to learn to play and read music.. most often its those who has the most success. Me, im just a mouseician.
