Its pretty simple really:

The problem from the selectors perspective:

Internal politics that result in a lot of young talent missing out on making the team coupled with a fear of backlash from dropping experienced players.

From the players perspective:

Most of the players from India and Pakistan come from poor (and often illiterate backgrounds. All of a sudden they are hit with more fame and fortune than they could have dreamt about and their mentality (that stemmed from rural upbringing) doesnt allow them to know how to handle that maturely and then you have the media glamorizing them and corporates flocking to sponsor them in ads which make them feel like gods who have achieved everything that often results in their taking things for granted.

The decision of the board to try to limit the number of sponsorships and also eliminate performance based incentive are probably the first positive decisions that they have made in a long time.

Just curious if in cricket all those players basically catch the ball with their hands ... what would happen in baseball if they had to do the same thing???

there would probably be a lot more runs scored and the game might even turn out to be entertaining

So tomorrow is theeee World Cup 2007 final...

Australia vs Sri Lanka...really hoping SL gets it this time...

The way this WC has gone, one should be glad that Bangladesh and Ireland are not in the final...they have both destroyed big teams...

Posted by Trance Nutter on Apr-27-2007 14:12:

woooooooo, a cricket thread

Aussies are gonna win (honestly, not just cos I'm Australian), they've got the best batting lineup (although not far in front of Sri Lanka) and by far the best bowling lineup of the tournament, but it should be a great game, should be the best game of the tournament. Without a doubt the two teams that should be there, are.

Gonna enjoy seeing Malinga, haven't seen him at all cos we only get the Australian games

ze Australians have done it again!

Posted by samhouse on Apr-28-2007 23:54:

love the sport...

I don't think the Caribbean was quite ready to host the worldcup. What a shame considered the last one was 4 years ago. This tournament has been a disappointing faliure.

You know you have trouble when the sport relys on two nations (India and Pakistan) to reach the later stages of the tournament to keep interest.

I was glad to see some of the lesser nations reach furthur in the tournament (Ireland and Bangladesh), but today's final ended in a real farce...fitting really seeing the way the rest of the tournament was organised...

Congratulations to the Aussies...they deserve that title. Their work ethic and ruthless nature was the key ...i personally hate these ******s, but what can you do. Have to applaud greatness when it is demonstrated.

Posted by Tordan on Apr-29-2007 00:48:

yeah the aussies were the stronger team and it was a good win. its too bad that the conditions sucked and we weren't treated to a good game worthy of the world cup final.

Posted by Trance Nutter on Apr-29-2007 04:25:

How can you hate a team or player for being too good?

Why not hate the other teams who aren't good enough to challenge us? If they were better, then we would lose, but they're not, and who's fault is that? Not Australia's.

Why not admire Australia for what they can achieve? And Gilchrist - only idiots would hate him for that innings, it was one of the best WC finals innings, there was some quite brilliant hitting.

This WC was a shambles from start to finish, hopefully the ICC and organising committee learn and not make the same mistakes again. And the end to the match was a joke, absolute disgrace, did anyone know what was happening?

Really disappointed in the final as well, we were really robbed of the final we deserved by the weather, would've loved to see a good ahrd fought match.

Well..I dun hate Australians but definitely hate the fact that they keep winning all the time...

And yea...we all do hate the fact that our country sucked this world cup...but the frustration needs to be vented right..
Yea, this world cup wasnt organized very well...it was pretty ridiculous to see the horrible light condition at the final earlier today but well, it would not have really mattered cos Australians would have won anyways...well deserved too...

It really is about fuckin time other nations begin to rise and yea, I was sure as well glad to see Mcgrath peacing out...hehe...Indians I think have pretty much decided that they cannot play him...

One good thing that has come out thru this WC is that both India and Pakistan have realized how much more hardwork needs to be done and both the authorities are beginning to take some strong measures...so yea, with the next world being hosted in the Indian subcontinent, you aussies better watch out

I want to see CANADA RISE and kick some countrie's ass ....

oh CANADA ....

and people forget, CANADA is one of the oldest nations that used to play cricket. After all, Canada is the British Monarch's baby.

And I see Cricket as a Varsity Sport one day here in Toronto. There's a lot of South Asians that play, and I see a lot of interest coming in from elsewhere around the world.

I was so glad to see like couple of australians yesterday when I was watching the game.

I was like wowiee... there's a MATE

The first international sporting event to occur in recorded history was a cricket game between Canada and U.S. in the mid 1800s. There's a picture of it at my club.
