Well, depends on whether 'race' is defined by ethinicity in which case we'd have to decide how we're going to judge that or by nationality.

Kris, I have too much time on my hands and I will nitpick

in the way that you put it.. all three vs eachother...

in that instance it would be defined by religion..

Australia, the US and England - the triumvirate of racism.

Here in Oz, things are getting pretty calamitous in relation to racism. The Sudanese are becoming a huge problem here in Melbourne; as in recent years with the Croats Vs Serbs Vs Bosnians, Afghans Vs everyone and so on. But ah well you know. Racism is here to stay, so don't do it.

A lot of people define race by nationality.

Like people who said Yanks.

There is no such race as Yanks. It's a mixture of various ethnicity from all over the world

You mean the Native Americans...

They are just part of what we call United States...

Unless if you're talking about the entire indigenious population of American continents from Canada all the way down to Argentina

def the most racist place i have ever been to. i hate all the races in that country. and i mean ALL!! just coz of how they act to wards each other. apartheid was the worst thing to ever hit any part of southern africa.

now the opposite is happening. im not surprised though, you do one thing to one race it is sure to take a swing when the cards have turned.

im glad that i never got influenced by all the racism and thus i love everybody.

Every country has an excessive amount of racism in it... but the real question is how to determine which ones have a greater population of rascim than others... and that is of course the million dollar question.. After working in a call center I was one of the few people who spoke only one language, thus being the minority. After socializing with many cultures and ethnicities they all seem to have some predjudice towards certain races... prior to the call center I had travelled all throughout Ontario as far west as Attikokan to as far north as Deep River.. most people do not realize if you don't live in a "City" like Toronto your more or less a "red neck" and I'm sure this is far more evident out West in places like Alberta and BC. Regardless whether they are labeled a red neck or hick etc I'd be damned if I saw many ethnic people whether it was blacks, asian, indian etc. The same rule of thumb applies to most countries... ie the first person I chatted with in the call center was Romanian... she said she never saw one black person in Romania.

Humans generally tends to fear, or at least be wary of the unknown. Anything that's not familiar or unsure about become automatic subjects of suspicion. It's just natural survival instinct. (imagine being in a jungle and you see something that's not suppose to be there... for all you know, it could be a trap or a predator. being someone else's food is bad)

Until one gets to know that unfamiliar unknown and learn about it and see that for most part, it will do you no harm, one tends to be mildly hostile towards it. Plus the ignorance and stereotypes makes easy for some people to fall under those influences.
Perhaps a person is polite and courteous to that first black or Chinese or whatever ethnic person just as civilized society dictates, but most people aren't very overly friendly towards strangers. (Unless bound by some specific code of hospitality demanded by culture)

Just my observation

I think people are just afraid of minorities because they usually don't have as much money as we do, so they break into our cars to steal the mp3 players we can afford. Subsequently people want to hire them less, and it's a vicious cycle.

More of a stereotype. White people do crimes too.
I admit that certain races may seem like they do more crimes, but a lot of it is perpetuated by the media, which fuels words of mouth and also people who had bad runs with people of other races.

I have to say that in every country there are groups that are prejudiced one way or the other.

Too bad people cant just judge character....

No, the only people they treat like shit are the morons who can't go for 30 seconds without shooting their mouths off about how Americans are all racist slack-jawed yokels and that with respect to 9/11 they "had it coming". Not that I'm implying anything here, of course.

Do you not know how things work when the roles are reversed, or do you just think it's OK for the Saudis and the Iraqis to decapitate foreign repair crews and journalists and videotape forced conversions at gunpoint, because their particular interpretation of the Sharia permits it?

That's not right. I can't even seem to find anything on statscan anymore because it's become such a taboo in PC Canada, but I distinctly remember the statistic a few years ago on prison demographics in Toronto being something like 20% or 30% black, highly disproportionate to their population demographic of under 10% in Toronto, much less across Canada. Now, if you take a look at CSC, you'll see that the focus across the country is on Aboriginals who comprise 20% of the prison demographics but less than 3% of the population. There are dozens of publications just on the CSC about this problem.

We can debate all day (or rather, you guys can, I'm not touching this one) what accounts for those statistics, but facts are facts and it's simply wrong to state that there's no correlation in Toronto or greater Canada between crime rates and ethnicity.

I'd go so far as to say that the mass media is a willing participant in covering up race issues with respect to crime, especially violent crime. We're often not told that shootings are the result of gang violence, and journalists constantly rely on silly phrases like "lone gunman" instead of telling us, for example, that it was a young Muslim male who walked into a Jewish centre, said some choice words about Israel and Jews, and proceeded to shoot several pregnant women (this actually happened, during the relatively recent Israel/Lebanon hostilities).

Don't blame the media for racial tension; they'll happily report on just about any newsworthy crime regardless of who committed it, and they're usually very tight-lipped when it comes to ethnicity or other background information.

I was also referring to not just newspapers, but also movies, tv shows etc that portrays characters according to stereotype.

Of course. So by that logic, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Seinfeld, Frasier, Home Improvement, Friends (the list goes on and on) all portray white males according to the popular stereotype of stupid, arrogant, incompetent, impulsive blithering idiots who can barely maintain a relationship or hold down a steady job - right?

I'm curious what you'd have to say about other "stereotypical characters":
- Apu from The Simpsons, a totally honest, hardworking Indian who knows more about American history than any of the other characters on the show;
- Hermes on Futurama, a Jamaican character who they always play the obvious limbo stereotype off of, but other than that, is essentially a practical and efficient anal-retentive capitalist.
- If you've ever watched Malcolm in the Middle then surely you know of Stevie, the genius asthmatic black kid in a wheelchair. Can't quite figure out what stereotype that is.
- For any sci-fi geeks out there I could probably run off a dozen Star Trek characters, including Jordie from TNG (hardcore engineer, doesn't know how to talk to women) and Sisko from DS9 (a basically competent commander with very few obvious character flaws).
- How about detective Ed Green or Lt. Van Buren from Law and Order - sure, they definitely fit the "criminal" stereotypes!
- Or how about Neela on ER, played by Parminder Nagra who also played the character of Jess in the highly hyped movie Bend it like Beckham?

Sorry Yohan but you aren't reaching me here. In fact, the only real stereotype I can see in TV and movies with any consistency is the bumbling white male in comedies and sitcoms.

Maybe there are people like Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock who do nothing but play to the same old stereotypes, but they were only ever cast into the media limelight because they were already very successful in their own groups as stand-ups. They're stereotyping themselves, nobody has written their scripts for them. For the characters that are scripted, on movies and TV, I think if you really actually investigate this you'll see that writers and producers are extremely careful not to give any serious personality flaws to ethnic characters.
