Benjamin Franklin diverts an idle hour

[Benjamin Franklin, portrait by David Martin, 1767. White House Historical Association.]

In December 1775, "An American Guesser" anonymously wrote to the Pennsylvania Journal:

"I observed on one of the drums belonging to the marines now raising, there was painted a Rattle-Snake, with this modest motto under it, 'Don't tread on me.' As I know it is the custom to have some device on the arms of every country, I supposed this may have been intended for the arms of America."
This anonymous writer, having "nothing to do with public affairs" and "in order to divert an idle hour," speculated on why a snake might be chosen as a symbol for America.

First, it occurred to him that "the Rattle-Snake is found in no other quarter of the world besides America."

The rattlesnake also has sharp eyes, and "may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance." Furthermore,

"She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. ... she never wounds 'till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her."
Finally,

"I confess I was wholly at a loss what to make of the rattles, 'till I went back and counted them and found them just thirteen, exactly the number of the Colonies united in America; and I recollected too that this was the only part of the Snake which increased in numbers. ...

"'Tis curious and amazing to observe how distinct and independent of each other the rattles of this animal are, and yet how firmly they are united together, so as never to be separated but by breaking them to pieces. One of those rattles singly, is incapable of producing sound, but the ringing of thirteen together, is sufficient to alarm the boldest man living."
Many scholars now agree that this "American Guesser" was Benjamin Franklin.

The Macedonian flag rocks!

Lira son, short history lesson for you... That flag is a complete rip off of the sun of Vergina, and is the flag of macedonia, greece.

The flag you are referring to is that of FYROM or better known as Bulgaria!

No, it's not. It's a rip off of the Japanese naval ensign:

Which actually gives Macedonia more hotness points

Wait, this is the flag of Bulgaria:

And "FYROM" is to Macedonia the same way "dentifrice" is to toothpaste. Who in their right mind would call a country "Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia" just because the Greeks don't like their name?

...

Wait, you're Greek, aren't you? Kay, what's the matter of "Macedonia", if you don't mind me asking?

Good lord there's some geographically challenged people in this thread.

Macedonia is a sovereign state. Bulgaria is a sovereign state. None of them have any governmental connection to greece anymore (not for the last like 500 years anyway).

Someone asked if autonomous regions within states have their own flags. They do; case in point the 50 flags of the states of the USA, or if that doesn't work for you, the flag of Kosovo, an autonomous state within Serbia that's probably going to be the world's newest country within the next 12 months:

or the Basque flag that a couple spanish terrorists would love to call their state flag: (Note that this isn't the official flag of the Basque separatist movement as there IS no official flag; they're just a bunch of disorganized commie revolutionaries...)

or the Palestinian flag which isn't recognized by anyone important, or the Taiwanese flag which isn't recognized either ever since they got punked by China.

Personally, my favorite is the UN flag

Nah, I think he's just Greek... they hate Macedonia because of its name, apparently, and they think it's also a Bulgarian muppet state of some sort

Lira please stop referring to FYROM as Macedonia...they have nothing in common, and its quite offensive to be labelled the same as a race that has history of cheating, stealing and lying...
