A thread mill is the best thing to run on. Play some music or stare at the TV screen in front of you. Watch a movie and you totally forget you are running.

Nah, that would be boring for me. I want to run to improve my cardiovascular health, and to give myself a new hobby. Treadmill ftl.

Running is a great hobby. I usually run 20+ miles a week when I have the time.

Treadmills are definately boring. Get outside and breathe some fresh air. I reccomend that you run in as many different areas as you can, to keep things interesting and fresh. Running the same route over and over gets old, at least for me. I'll often just drive my car to some nice area, park, and run while watching the sights go by. An mp3 player helps a lot too.

As for your knees, get good shoes and buy some Flax Seed Oil and/or Omega 3/6 capsules at GNC or any health food store (a lot of grocery stores have them now too these days). They are good for your joints. Remember, the earlier in life you build strong, durable knee joints, the longer they will last you as you age. Don't worry too much about ruining them. Listen to your body and don't overdo it, and you'll be fine.

Yeah that's why I'm not too worried about it...I've always been pretty athletic.

edit: Thanks.

When i run i try & do 4-5 miles a day at least 3 days a week. Last summer i challenged myself to run 4 miles in 95-100 degree weather & i did it. It made my night jogs alot easier. Only tips that i got is to try & challenge yourself & also make sure your breathing is good. I always got a bass beat going in my head to keep my breathing right.

Thanks Jonny!

Is that where you can run and post on TA at the same time?

Eh, also Jennypie, if you're anything like me, don't eat/drink dairy for two hours before running, or you'll get a hell of a stitch. That doesn't apply to everyone though.

Posted by Omega_M on Jun-06-2007 04:14:

you know what I meant

Motivation is really the biggest thing...help me get in the zone!

Just make sure your shoe laces are properly tied.

If you see an agent you do what we do, run, you run your ass off.

I think others have said pretty much all the good tips but some of my tips.

-get good pair of insoles, esp. if you're going to run on pavement only. Proper running shoes are a must, but proper insoles will help to reduce the impact on the heels of your foot which leads to your spine.

-blow your nose before each run. Boogers don't help breathing.

-use proper breathing technique. in through your nose, out through your mouth. don't hyperventilate. slow down if you're having trouble breathing until you get back to proper breathing and then speed back up again.

-don't just run on flat surface. tackle the hills too. not only does it build up your muscles better (like walking up stairs) but it also breaks up the monotony of flat surface

-avoid running in midday or extreme humid days. sucks the energy right out of you and unless you're testing yourself, IMO serves no real purpose running in those weather

-also do wind sprints. sprint 100m, then slow down to fast walking pace for 100m, then repeat until how long distance you want to do wind sprints for. this will build up for cardio. I do this esp. at the last stretch of my run (and help you last longer in the sack)

-set a time that you've decided to run and stick to it. if you're going to do MWF 6am, stick to that as much as possible. routine makes everything easier

-hard techno is the best for running I find

-if you don't want to be sore, stretch properly before and after. I spent min 5 mins when possible at least 10, esp. if you're just started to run. or else you'll be real sore. special emphasis on leg muscles, esp. groin. hold your stretches at least 30 secs for proper stretch

-if you can run 5km in 25mins, you're decently fit. if you can run 5km in 20mins, you'll wear out your bf in the sack without breaking a sweat

Have fun!

don't have sex the night before you run

lol

It just occurred to me how funny it is that humans need advice on how to run these days. It's pretty simple in reality, we've been doing it since we evolved from monkeys.

Just get out there and DO IT!

I agree with most of what you said, but there is no "correct" way to breathe.

If you can breathe through your nose, you're not running hard enough. Think about the size of your nose vs your mouth, and the amount of oxygen you can get in to each.

In my years of running competitively, before I gave up because I was lazy, I only ever met ONE person who breathed through their nose. You can tell because they sound like a fucking teapot whistling and you can hear them coming from a mile away.

I was always in and out through the mouth. Just do whatever feels comfortable.

Stretching will help prevent injuries and tightness the next day, but not soreness. (yes, there's a difference between soreness and tightness). The only way to relieve soreness is with adequate blood flow to the area, via

a) doing a proper warm down
b) alternating between cold and hot on the affected area(ice and hot shower)
c) running gently the next day
d) running so damn much that your body becomes immune to it, as mine did.

Stretching is great though. I'd recommend 10-15 minutes, regardless of ability or experience.

Stretching is only really necessary for when you're going fast though, because the muscles are at full extension. My cousin was totally against stretching, and he ran across Australia without doing it once (3 month trip!). I think that was stupid though.
