Blue Planet Corporation - Overbloody Flood is a good example what pure trance is for me!
thoughtlessjex is right. Yellow is not a primary colour
In this picture trance is this white area and techno, acid house and industrial are three primary colours
whatever music takes you high into the clouds, makes you partialy loose perception of reality (like a drug effect) and makes you want to laugh, scream and cry at the same time is trance. i personally find a microscopical fraction of new so-called trance causing the abovementioned effects, so I personally suggest that trance is particularly the OLD trance of 199X-2003 (+epic, +psy, +goa, +techtrance etc.)
something like Humate, old Digweed etc, old James Holden

you cant define pure trance as people said at the start of this thread.... plus others gave mention of trance at different time periods, thats your answer right there!!!! as trance production changes with time!!!!!
blacknoizybox -
pretty much any instrumental dance music can put you in a hypnotized state. you only feel that way because of the repetitive beat and sounds. you're not actually in a trance even if it's romantic to think that.
everyone always has these sentimental, anecdotal definitions of 'trance'
if you want to see trance go check out occultic brazilian rituals

When I think of the feeling that I got from the scene years ago when I started going to illegal warehouse and mountain parties, no word can come close to appropriately labelling it. Psytrance, trance, house...they just don't approximate the feeling that comes with the music I dig the most.
Likewise, the reciprocate applies as well...some genres simply lack definition and especially because of how subjective it is to consider the musical tastes of millions of people, it's simply impossible.
Even if you could define what pure trance is someone will always be devil's advocate which is why terms like "trance" or "minimal" or "microhouse" or "prog" are simply approximations of a sort of general agreement, they aren't definable in any real sense and don't matter.
Pretty much sums up why I've quit trying to label genres or try to explain genres to people, because it's much easier to just say "EDM" and have people know what your talking about.
