I live right by a elementary school and I see a lot of idiots doing 50-60 over.... everybody who does that should be lined to a wall and shot:

if it's safe to step on it on the highway and the weather permits, why not? I mean...the 400 series, people do 120 in the first lane, hence you gotta go with the flow...

but people who nearly shave rear bumpers when they change lanes and weave all over the road like they think they're nascar drivers, yes, those should not drive...

sorry. should say on the highway. i hate it when people speed or fly around corners on residential streets. i sometimes feel like throwing a dummy on my street infront of a car to show how easily some of the idiots can hit someone.
smooth driving = safe driving.

I am also personally touched by this issue. I was charged w dangerous driving many years ago and I was lucky that at that time this issue wasn't in the public's eye otherwise I wouldn't have been let off so easy.

Luckily in my case, no one was injured (except for my gf's and my bruises and her sprained ankle, plus neck pains from whiplash (car was written off). I was pretty stupid then and I think the criminal charge of dangerous driving should be used more often bc I have not raced anyone since then, even though my cars have gotten faster.

I still like to drive fast, and sometimes in case of emergency I will weave, but never race, never again.

Only 2 speeding tickets in the past 6 yrs would attest to that!

My only criticism is the people who hug the left lane and those who cut u off when ur abt to overtake them. A few ppl here have seen the road rage get to me while in the car w me and I'm still working on that! Having the top down w classical music playing certainly helps!

Posted by King Luis on Aug-15-2007 19:22:

also the people who speed up when you try to pass them or the people who slam on the brakes for no reason when your behind them because they think your too close. happened to me once. the guy almost made me collide with him.
classical music in a m3 vert. nice.

I've had this topic come up every time there is a accident on one my car forums.... Media has made anyone driving a modified car a street racer. The amounts of deaths per year from street racing compared to drunk driving (where someone has died) is a lot higher. There is no point creating a new law when we have laws already in place that enforce reckless driving. If the police would enforce the laws already in place then we wouldn't need to create these BS ones.

As for crushing someone's car I see no point. Was it the car that broke the law? No it was the driver. If that drive had enough money they would build another car and do it all over again...

Leave street racing and excessive speeding aka population control be.

But yeah I agree that it isn't speeding that kills people, it's idiotic driving that does.
For example, going 70 on the highway with everyone else going 110-130.
Or not checking blindspots, slamming on your brakes even though you're 10ft from the line when the light turns yellow.
OR zipping around residential streets.

Going 50 over on the highway is nothing, most people are doing 130-145 anyway. You're more of a threat if you're doing 100 while everyone else is doing 140.

Anyone actually caught RACING THEIR CARS on any road should be severely punished, no questions asked. They are fucktards and don't deserve to drive, PERIOD.

But nailing speeders on the 401 with these hefty penalties might be a tad bit excessive. 100kmph on the 401 is a bit dated in my opinion and could be raised to 110 or 120. I'll admit that i've routinely done the 140-150kmph on the 401 when the roads are clear but that doesn't make it legal. It all depends on my mood really...sometimes I don't mind getting somehwere 5 or 10 minutes slower than if I drove like a crazy man.

Anyone caught doing 50 over the limit within a city or town should definitely be charged with racing and severely punished as well.

Agreed.

There is no reason to drive that fast (unless you've been trained and your vehicle is equipped - and less than 1% of the population can say that).

I know and you're right. I forgot to say that I only do that speed on certain stretches of the 401 and usually later in the day when there is less traffic. I am not one of those crazy idiots in the GTA who weave in and out on the Gardener in parking lot traffic at 140kmph. I'm mainly driving from KW to London and back all the time, with the occasional trip to TO or Ottawa. I'm a good driver with a perfect record (no tickets, no accidents). I passed every graduated licensing test the first time and handily. I was trained on many vehicles for my job as I went through university. I"m a better driver than most people on the road, but I still know that when I'm driving over the speed limit, I'm breaking the law and could get punished.

Have you taken a skid control course?

Have you taken track training on how to handle a car at speed, maneuver a vehicle at speed (while surrounded in traffic, not in a straight line, as accidents rarely happen in open roads/straight lines)?

Is your car equipped with proper tires, suspension and power train to handle high speeds?

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-22-2007 05:20:

high speeds? Most people travel about 110-120 on the 401. I tend to be in the fast lane or middle lane and most of the time on the stretch between KW-London if i"m going about 130ish I'm merely keeping pace with the rest of traffic. How often do you do that stretch of highway?

I rarely ever go any faster than 140-150ish and I find myself doing that less and less these days. I would say I'm probably more closer to a steady 125-130 most of the time. I never said it was right and I'm not the kind of person who would bitch if I got pulled over and slammed with that huge fine for speeding on the 400 series highways.

But do you notice that good drivers aren't the ones who get caught? I never have been pulled over, even within a city but I never go any faster than 5-10 over, which again, is usually keeping pace with everyone else in a city.

Can you honestly say that you have proper control of your vehicle at 160 km/hr?

If you actually believe that then you shouldn't even be able to drive...I am scarred of sharing the road with people who share this train of thought.

I cannot think of one legit reason to drive 50 km/hr over the speed limit....if someone can give me one legit reason I would be shocked.

And people complain why their insurance is so much....it because idiots who share this stupid belief that speeding doesn't kill.

I have just as much control at 160km/h as I do at 100km/h...

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Aug-22-2007 15:33:

I put a huge wing on the trunk of my car, so I actually have MORE control at 160km/h than I do at 100km/h.

since when do u have to take a course in order to drive at 150km/hour?

The fact that you cannot even stop in the same distance going a 160 as you can at 100 is enough to say you don't have as much control.

Posted by Zentac_75 on Aug-22-2007 19:02:

ROFL!!!!!!

I'm not judging those of you who like to drive really fast but STOP RATIONALIZING IT!!! It's like a f'in drug addict/drunk who says he's experienced enough to 'HANDLE IT'. Just admit you don't care about the risks involved to yourselves and others on the road. Even if you are flawless, you HAVE TO ACCOUNT for others on the road who may err and then at 150k/h you will NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT TIME to react.
Furthermore even if you argue that.... Safety features on cars are designed to withstand accidents at typical velocities. Point being made, you crash at that speed you are DEAD!!! and probably so are the 3 other drivers you hit when your car is bouncing around the highway because of the impact.

You are NOT TRAINED RACE CAR DRIVERS driving vehicles specifically designed for high speeds!!!

Saying you 'have control' 50K/h over the limit on a road DESIGNED for 50k/h less in VERY IGNORANT!!!

Even professional drivers would not drive a stock car that much over the limit especially on the highway because they have much more respect for the consequences.

Speed all you want, wherever you want, just please don't tell me that you are not endangering yourself or others (And don't justify it by saying immigrants are worse drivers, because that is a silly argument). Many people are bad drivers, but a dozen fender benders from hacks who can't merge right is better than a 3 car collision with multiple fatalaties anyday.

/end vent

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-22-2007 20:47:

I'm curious how many people drive in the right lane at 100kmph on the 401 just like you're "supposed" to? I agree that 150-160 is excessive especially in the GTA on the 401, QEW, expressways, but the 401 (especially on stretches between KW-London and most DEFINITELY London-Windsor) could be extended to 110 or 120.

The relatively few people who kick it at 100 (they are usually old or timid drivers) are being totally blown away by everyone else. I do the drive between KW-London almost on a weekly basis and I make it in an hour or less when the roads are clear every time. In the winter or rain I adjust accordingly like every good driver but on those stretches of highway, I do not feel bad in the slighest when I'm travelling at 120-130kmph. Apparently the OPP don't care either because they never pull me over for it.

400 to Toronto, or on the 404/DVP... on avg 120-130 km/h most all the time... and thats keeping up with traffic pretty much. Tend to go fastest speed I can while behind another car (ie. not leading the pack)

exactly...for people who are always commuting on the 401, 120ish is merely keeping pace and that's why people very rarely ever get pulled over for maintaining that speed. Now, if people want to drive any faster than that, which many of us do at times, then we should be prepared to pay the consequences (be it an accident, fines, demerit points, etc).

That said, there are some HORRIBLE drivers out there whip in and out of traffic on severely congested highways that make me just shake my head.

In the real world, this is called 'the illusion of control'

You're an idiot.

I bet you any money that a man's penis size is inversely proportional to how much he drives over the limit. You small-dicked bastards (no offence to the Asians).

I always thought that about guys who drive those over-huge trucks with big diesel engines and four wheels on the back. Totally unnecessary...but they must have something to prove.
