This is pretty much how rangers play all their games even against some of the poorest sides in scotland.

They should be pulled up in front of the EU for crimes against football.

Messi was so right when he called them out for playing anti-football earlier in the season. If they can hit 4 past Bayern, I hope Zenit will tear them a new one. All be it said, every prediction I've made has been wrong in both UCL and Uefa Cup in the semi-final stages, so I'm not too hopeful.

Posted by verndogs on May-02-2008 04:37:

Extra time was pretty exciting at least........

Fiorentina just wasted so many opportunities to put the ball home in the net.

Posted by denys envy on May-02-2008 17:56:

i believe the first, of three, goal chances for rangers came in like 77th minute.

as a e-mailer on guardian put it - this proves that, if there is a god, he's a bit of a shit.

Bit disappointed that Fiorentina came all this way and dominating this game without advancing. Vieri skying it over the bar in penalties, a player who had a lethal shot and good accuracy in his earlier days has left his boots at home. But fiorentina did have chances to seal the game it just wasn't meant to be.

Wierd final match-up. With Zenit being underdogs and on fire atm ill be cheering them on.

I hope Zenit rapes Rangers.

End of the day a Rangers team who are playing a game every second day nearly beat a team who were totally rested.

It went to pens Rangers did the job Fiorentina didn't. And Fiorentina were at home and didn't have such a punishing schedule. End of the day Rangers did well.

3 shots on target each..Rangers down to 10 men for most of extra time. They did an efficient job. End of.

Rangers were more threatening with 10 men

Yeah they were. But I hate how people can't appreciate what an organisational masterclass they displayed. Individually each player is possibly inferior to many teams they have beaten but as a team they have done VERY well.

Plus Cuellar is an outstanding player these days.

I find it ironic that an Italian team is whining about someone else playing defensive counter attacking football.

Posted by denys envy on May-06-2008 19:41:

Fiorentina have been on the decline lately tho, so I can't really say I'm surprised they lost. This is definitely not the same Viola that raped through the first half of the season and were as high as #3 in Serie A.

Too bad Pogrebnyak has to sit out the final, he's probably the biggest Russian talent right now and I could see him going somewhere after his displays in the Cup... probably Germany or Spain - the more customary destinations for Russian players.

Zenit though they have had a good run, won admirers, have a load of cash, and will be rested compared to Rangers and all the rest. They should be prepared for a frustrating night which if they let that frustration manifest itself in over extension for a second expect Rangers to capitalise.

It is basically what they do.

Posted by verndogs on May-14-2008 19:27:

OMG! Rangers got a shot off in the first half!

Posted by Dervish on May-14-2008 19:40:

Yeah but as expected Rangers have been organised. And have had very decent chances. A bit more conviction and gers could have done well.

Pen claim was interesting though.

Posted by nchs09 on May-14-2008 19:51:

watcfhing it now... 0-0 in the second half.... the russian team isnt bad eh?

Posted by Ian on May-14-2008 20:02:

you have to think that if Zenit are going to get owt, it's going to come from Arshavin, and for Rangers, from maybe a set piece.

Posted by jupiterone on May-14-2008 20:40:

FUCK that 2nd goal was awesome. i am so glad rangers got raped.

Posted by Dervish on May-14-2008 20:41:

Gers just seemed to go out like a damp squib!!! Entirely unexpected in the way they dropped their heads when they went 1-0 down. Crazy stuff in midfield. Loss of the ball there was criminal by the likes of Thomson.

Posted by Yohan on May-14-2008 20:42:

In the end, the better team won.

Zenit was frustrated for a long time by stubborn and well organized Rangers defence, but one moment of genius from Arshavin and clinical finish from Denisov put Zenit up. Rangers lack of offensive flair couldn't create anything, and reduced to long ball attempts. Oh well.

Posted by Intuition on May-14-2008 20:45:

Great finish. I knew the second goal was going to come after Zenit went ahead and Rangers were forced to push up. Even though the commentators on FSC wouldn't stop talking about Arshavin, I have to admit that he was brilliant throughout. Tekke, not so much, although he eventually provided the assist for Zenit's second. Another win in the battle against Anti-Football.

Posted by Dervish on May-14-2008 20:45:

I don't know if the best team did. Rangers let Zenit play. Zenit weren't amazing or anything.

A very strange game, surreal in a lot of ways.

Posted by Ian on May-14-2008 20:48:

the team who tried to score harder won for sure. I think everyone expected Bayern & Fiorentina or Villarreal or someone more 'fancied' to get there & in the end it did lead to a weird final. next week will be worse though.

So how could Rangers be the better team if they let Zenit play? I agree, it was strange, but it was super one-sided in my opinion, and it needed the first goal to actually wake up Rangers and get them to attack (which they actually did pretty well). They may have actually scored if they had started attacking earlier in the match.

LOL. Rangers are fuckin rotten. Zenit are a far superior team and if rangers did come out to try and match them at playing football you'd have been looking at a cricket score.

Rangers played the only way they know how against half decent opposition and even when they went 1-0 down they couldnt adapt their game. They got what they deserved, in fact no, they got more than they deserved because they should have been knocked out much earlier in the tournament for the rubbish defenceball they've played.

Posted by chesco on May-14-2008 22:04:

And now the rangers fans go on the riot.

Scotlands shame indeed.

Posted by sleepydragon on May-14-2008 22:09:

best team won

and if its true they are riotting then thats to be expected from the british idiots nowadays
