Packed with 5000-10,000 fans vs. 100,000 though.

Tiesto isn't playing to crowds of 60K plus, every week.

Lol, no - we were talking about the size of the crowds that the Bears (or any NFL team) play to as opposed to the crowds Tiesto plays to.

Also, out of curiosity, are Tiesto concerts televised internationally very regularly?

What was the talk about the pubs then?

Radio?

(This is passing the time nicely before Simpsons, by the way)

I'm sorry, re-reading my posts I can see the confusion. My discussion of the pubs in Amsterdam and London was simply that it seemed relatively easy for me to catch American Football while I was abroad. Perhaps it's just because I was looking, but it didn't seem I had to look hard.

I misunderstood your assertion that Tiesto shows were always packed and drew an improper analogy to live football.

I think this is without a doubt the strongest argument I think you could give with regard to how Tiesto reaches new fans and markets himself as opposed to the Bears, though I'm uncertain how many people actually listen to Club Life religiously and whether or not it would come close to the number of people who watch an NFL football game in a given week.

In the end, I really don't have much in the way of hard statistics on either side of the fence, so what it boils down to is my own intuition and experience which are clearly not authoritative or definitive commentaries on the issue.

And yes, this is passing the time until my exam rather nicely, though it's still unfortunate that this thread even exists (which I'm sure is something we can both agree on)

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Sep-13-2007 17:34:

Believe it or not but this isn't even the worst thread on the front page...

Edit:
Incidentally, the Simpsons episode that just started opens with a football gag

Well then I'm glad that outside of this thread, I'm knee-deep in Kant.

/lame philosophy joke.

Were these American-themed pubs or did you ask to watch the games? I've just looked in the paper and the only NFL match on TV this week started in the middle of Monday night. I can't imagine the general public staying up until midnight on a work night to watch American Football.

Actually, now that I think about it, the Bears might win by virtue of the "Superfans" SNL skit. Close call.

Do you have a satellite dish?

And no, I only went to one "American Themed Sports Bar" while I was in London, the rest were all very random.

And noon games started at 6, 3 games at 10, and so on. The only really late games were either Sunday night or Monday night.

Yes. I work in a pub as well, and I've never known anyone watch NFL.

in order to settle this debate and to better educate the masses, i suggest a bizzaro-flip-day for DJ Tiesto and the Chicago Bears. Tiesto can come to Chicago and put on a football uniform and attempt to score a touchdown, and the Chicago Bears can all get into a DJ booth and collectively try their best at trance and jesus poses.

then the question would no longer be "who is more well known" but "who will fail harder?"

I'd pay to see the Chicago Bears "trance and Jesus poses" gig.

Well then your experience differs vastly from mine, it certainly doesn't make any of the points made in this thread any less valid simply because you've never known anyone to watch the NFL, nor does my ability to easily catch all of my home teams football games while abroad definitively support my position. You cannot, however, deny the fact that almost every single game that is played each week in the NFL is indeed available in almost any country where satellite service is available, so simply because you haven't found it doesn't mean it isn't there.

And honestly - if anyone can come up with some way to put forth a reasonable idea as to why Tiesto would be better known, I'll be all ears - but if all I have to go on is TV ratings and the shear fact that I know there are more people in the world who know what the NFL is than what trance music is, I'll trust my gut and not yours.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-14-2007 00:02:

I'm not debating that more people probably know about the Chicago Bears than Tiesto, but I think it's very likely that most of those people are American, because American football is hardly played at all outside of North America. I agree that anecdotal evidence isn't proof of anything, but out of the 100million people who watch the NFL every week, I'd be very interested to see the non-American percentage of that figure. I doubt that outside of America there are as many people who know the Chicago Bears as Tiesto.

Posted by RJT on Sep-14-2007 00:08:

I would never argue that it's popularity outside the U.S. is even remotely as large as it is here, "real" football (as it were) is undeniably the worlds most popular sport (except for maybe Nascar - but let's just pretend that doesn't even exist).

you could barely hear him on TV and that was what 2 billion of the people were watching them on.

tiesto = passing thought on tv
