I got mine a week ago. It's nice but I think the iPhone would have been better if it was for any carrier instead of just AT&T.

And the internet is just standard 802.11b or whatever the hell it's called - connects to any wireless network.

How is the battery life on this thing? I have a nano and it's pretty pathetic... like 7-8 hours tops.

Haven't really tested the battery, but I do know that if it ever gets to the point where it lasts less than 5 hours Apple will replace it (the entire iPod) for me for free.

And you can download songs (via WiFi) from other machines or the iTunes store, and with WiFi pretty much everywhere these days, I don't really see the need for cellular internets.

When you say "other machines" do you mean other iPod Touch devices?

Can anyone recommend a mobile power pack that you can recharge the battery with on the go? I found this one for the plane: http://www.inflightpower.com/products.asp don't know if it's legit.

By "other machines" I mean any other wireless enabled device that has a drive that can be mounted (essentially just computers).

And as far as the mobile power thing, I think there are a few 3rd party devices similar to what you're talking about, but I don't know for sure...

So the Touch can pull files off any computer that has wireless access? How does that work in terms of security? Do you have to enter the IP address of the unit you're trying to connect to?

Also regarding video, can you take a DVD and rip it onto the Touch (or any video iPod I guess)? I just bought all 3 seasons of Airwolf on DVD and want to put a few episodes on the Touch if I buy one!

You have to have a wireless network setup, and as long as that's password protected, the Touch will automatically detect networks it can connect to, you choose which you want, and if necessary enter the login information there. After that, you should be able to drag and drop files like you would when it's connected via the USB cable.

As far as the DVD rips go, I'm not sure - haven't done anything with video yet. Will try to check it out later today and let you know.

Wow so someone could log on to a non-pw protected wireless connection w their Touch and just copy a bunch of files off that person's HD? That's wild.

they could with their laptop too.... i dont see the problem here. password will protect your stuff. anyhow isnt that the point of setting up a wireless network

well if you have ever set up a wireless network, having an unprotected wireless router does not guarantee you access to computer files.

there is usually a firewall, and the outside computer (or touch, in this case) would have to be added to workgroup or sharegroup in order to simply pull files.

usually someone who goes through all that trouble, wont have an unprotected access point however|

Unless someone develops a crack, this is currently not doable in the iPod touch. The only way to get media content to your iPod is through iTunes either connected by USB cable or through WiFi. You can't drag and drop files from your computer directly into your iPod. You can't even download files off the internet.

get an iriver or the old ipod don't get the new one... it's worthless... just get an iphone if you want something like the itouch

Erm, I don't know about the drag & drop WiFi issue for sure, but you are definitely able to download files.

If I can get ahold of something to make a video, I'll try to put one up.

And speaking of crack - I can't wait until some start showing up for this thing, even random software hacks would be nice.

So as Apple has effectively said they're passively supporting 3rd party software mods for both the Touch and the iPhone, I've been browsing random iPhone mods to get an idea of what could possibly be in the works for the Touch (they both run on OSX), and I stumbled across this:





Call me a geek, but I think that's pretty neat.

Looking forward to seeing what the l337 h4xz0rs the world over come up with for this thing.

Yeah - I'm probably more intrigued by the practical applications that could make their way out for this thing, but there's no denying a little Nintendo anywhere is good thing.

EDIT: Some of those apps are resulting in bricked phones due to Apple being teh suck. I haven't done crap to mine yet, tho, Im getting ready too. I love that wall paper behind those icons. Apple are friggin EEEEEEEEEDIOTS. I hate them.

P.S. Apple is TEH ULTIMATE SUCK. How do u release a phone without a SINGLE game. I can't even go to the sh!tter and enjoy a nice game, since there's no signal in that part of the building. So, I'm stuck reading my emails or watching pr0n.

Gah. hate those bastards. hope they die.
