I chose the milk run with one night stops as i got to see more of asia on the way to thailand for less than the $1600 they wanted out of toronto.

what airline, and booking agency did you use? I'm assuming the $650 is r/t. Was that some crazy markdown special, or a normal rate?

Tiger airways is good but quite limited on flights within thailand itself. It's actually a singapore airline. Nok air is the one you want to check. It's extremely low rent looking but it's thailand's budget airline and the prices were fantastic.

Bangkok Airways provided the most amount of flights within Thailand including the lovely 1.5 hour flight from BK to Samui...flights are very affordable.

take the loymprah high speed ferry from ko tao to phangan. from thong sala to haad rin is about a 20 minute cab ride.

i like your itinerary.

you also made a good choice staying on the gulf side. like another person mentioned, phuket isnt where you want to stay. so many other much more beautiful places without the commercialisation/ prostitution.

i didnt have a chance to dive at ko tao, but did dive the bida islands on the andanman side. visiblility isnt as good as the carribean (sp?), but you'll see some larger sea creatures due to the hgiher plankton levels. i have heard shark island, one of the tao dive sites is good.

agreed,

i think we only paid 3500 baht ($100 cdn) for the flight.

pretty reasonable.

i dont want to say for sure, but i dont believe tiger or air asia fly to samui...

If you're in Bangkok hit up Sirocco bar.

I ended up booking with them, but through flight centre. The flight times are a little earlier than I'd like but I wanted it all taken care of and flight centre was able to do that for me.

erratik, that bar looks very cool - thanks!

Thats soo awesome that you are going to Thailand for new years, it is absolutely great there. But if you are into Thailand's full moon parties and stuff like that....you should also consider making a stop in Goa. - especially for the time around new years. Full moonlight beach parties ftw...

definitely looks like a cool place. I read that drinks are very pricey, as well as dinner (ie. $40 for main course)

Posted by Skipper on Oct-09-2007 22:36:

Any recommendations for accomodations?
I'm not looking to rough it.

Posted by djbruuen on Oct-10-2007 00:48:

for bangkok i was looking at : Sofitel Silom for my stay. #5 on tripadvisor. and its about $120/night

basically the most luxury for the price i think. (unless you were hoping to do even cheaper places)

Posted by Skipper on Oct-10-2007 01:47:

^^ Wow, that place looks pretty nice for $120/nt!
I figure on the islands I'll get more into the beach hut thing, but in Bangkok, on christmas day, I want to be somewhere comfortable. That place looks comfortable, I must say!

It seems to be in the business district tho - how central is that?

I took that picture outside MBK in Bangkok a week ago lol.

Accomidations, I would suggest Khao San Road. D&D Inn, I stayed there for 550baht a nigth in the regular room which has a working toilet, warm water, bed, tv. I never seen the deluxe of a single room which is 750 baht but the deluxe of a double room looks amazing. I think it's maybe 1250baht or 1750 baht. I can't recall, give or take it's 50-60CAD.

They also have internet cafe/massasge parlor/hair parlor/restaurant all built into it for easy access.

Outside of the center of Bangkok, but a taxi/tuktuk ride should cost maybe 100baht, max 200baht if theres traffic.

I'm in Phuket Town now and I just realized when I arrived this morning, don't stay in Phuket town because there's no beaches no the eastern cost. Goto the western coast, Hat Patong, which is 14km away from Phuket.

^^^ That is what I have heard and read - that you are more likely to be charmed out of your money than robbed of it outright!

The airport in Samui is really cool. Youll see what i mean when you get there

Posted by CAKE on Oct-11-2007 00:25:

I really can't wait to go there next summer what's better then living on the beach in Thailand ??

you mean the overseas airfare? I believe in bought it at travelocity.com

i got really lucky though. Try going to kayak.com and using the buzz fares option for buffalo to asia. You can usually find some amazing deals if your itinerary is flexible.

Dont fly from toronto unless you go to hong kong. everything else is very uncompetitive compared to buffalo for the most part.

Posted by djbruuen on Oct-11-2007 22:39:

^ getting it that cheap at travelocity must have been a crazy sale they were having. things are never that cheap there.

i checked out kayak, but it was about 1100 b4/tax and only on select dates (in the buzz section). Toureast.com still looks best. More flexible and out of toronto for the same price.

*bump*

I was really set on going to a full moon party for New Years, but as it turns out, most places anywhere near the party want a 5-7 night booking, nothing less. I only have a week in the islands and can picture myself getting bored, even beachside, for 7 full days on my own. Should I scrap the idea altogether and do Koh Tao and Koh Samui for my 7 days?

I fly into Koh Samui on Dec 26 and fly out Jan 3.

Posted by Skipper on Nov-06-2007 04:24:

Wooo, finally found something in Koh Phangan - and it was hard! I must have sent 15 different inquiries. I'm staying on Haad Salad, the beach just past Haad Yao (where I wanted to stay if I had the choice). I was also able to get only a 3 night stay - Dec 30 to Jan 2.

So now I'm looking for a place to stay in Koh Tao Dec 26 - Dec 30 - any suggestions for specific beaches or areas there?

Getting excited now...

Posted by bigfatandugly on Nov-07-2007 19:48:

truthfully, you wont find beaches in ko tao like you will in phangan.

most of the shoreline is rocky.

there is a very cool bungalow operation on the very east side (i forget the name) the bungalows are terraced down a cliff- side on stilts and overlook a beautiful rocky shoreline and bay. im sure if you mention this to someone on tao they will know the place.

rent a scooter on phangan if you can and spend the day exploring the island. it is truly the nicest of the 6 in thailand.

hope this helps.

Thanks!
I know the beaches on koh phangan are nicer than koh tao, but I don't think I could stay all 7 nts there...I want to stay on more than one of the islands. Plus, KT has amazing diving!

I think I've got a place at Lotus resort or something...I was really surprised at how booked up Koh Tao is already, but I guess it is smaller.
