Just for the record I've been listening to Christopher Lawrence DJ since the first time I saw him live in 2001 at Atlantis... and DJ Dan since 1999 at the BLC.

Hook Recordings (CL's label) was one of my all time favourite trance labels...

The comments we are making about them being in the TOP 10 are totally justified. The poll is a popularity contest, and on that note alone both DJ Dan (but mostly) CL are not in the same league as the others. It was clearly shady bullshit.

i seriously LOL'd reading this .. but agree that they need to implement a more secure voting system

what's stopping someone from essentially sabotaging a DJ's run by running some script to enter thousands of invalid votes from an IP address and having that DJ disqualified?

This whole vote is becoming more and more of a farce..

my comment was mostly related back to the author of the thread a few others who immediately jumped on a bandwagon of "sabotaged voting, therefore sucks as a DJ", which clearly makes no sense

it's unclear from the article if the marketing manager was alone in this or if the Dj's actually were aware of anything

I agree though, that the poll has been increasingly becoming a complete farce

i believe CL when he said he had nothing to do with it. he's a very down to earth guy much like J00F

What this shows is how big a deal being the number one DJ on djmag is to the DJs out there.

Posted by Rook on Oct-10-2007 04:24:

i find it hard to believe that Dj Dan and CL were unaware of what the manager was doing..

did they really think they were superior to Sasha, Digweed and the rest of the Djs underneath them..??

That's a good point! Tell Tiesto to do that to PvD and Armin

If you're stating that with respect to accuracy of submissions then I take offence - you can't rig the TA poll - simply because it's linked to your registered user ID and you're only allowed one vote. In terms of new registrations, it was only this year that I allowed them to vote whatsoever -- and those are put in a separate pool and if any off patterns exist then those will be removed from the others.

Further, whoever tried to cheat the DJ mag poll like that is an idiot.. First off, it's rather trivial to pick up public proxy lists that are country specific + attach them to public directories of names of people from said country - then you just randomize voting entry times/sequences/DJ names/'typos'/browser agents/etc to make entries look like they're coming from different computers/people. Obviously a random succession of votes from the same IP or a massive influx of votes for a particular DJ on a particular day(s) will fire off red flags...

hmmm, Carl Cox and Infected finished 11 and 12. I've experienced DJ Dan live... meh!

The TA poll is more respected than the 100 in my books for sure
as far as honesty goes.

Well atleast someone knows what they are talking about

Jon Jon you are right that the poll is a popularity contest and i agree that Sasha and Lawler and some others are way popular than CL and perhaps Dan also but the point i was trying to make is that lets not take away the contribution each has made to the industry by being around for such a long time. Those Djs do not suck just because they do not spin the type of music you like. I wonder how some of the other folks have reacted if instead of CL this was about Sasha or Lawler. We can have long and lengthy discussion about who is more popular and in what parts of the world but thats a totally different subject.

I do not agree or much care for Dj Mag poll and even though it is as stupid of a thing as riding a donkey down Yonge street but still cheating is cheating and i am disappointed to read about it.

As for your earlier post about clubs and good Djs, you are right there as well in your post however i think you misunderstood what i was trying to say. Me stating that higher ranking = good dj = more bookings meant that as far clubs are concerned the higher the ranking, the better the dj (which me and you both know is horse shit!)who will bring in more heads through the door hence they will get more bookings. Talent buyers in clubs these days do not tend to look at the talent in the DJ they only care for the money that DJ will bring and rightly so. It's a unfortunate thing but thats how the club industry is. It is also interesting to see that no one has said anything about the Dj who has admitted to paying money for higher ranking. Everyone is after the other guys lolz.

No, I meant in terms of representing the 'world opinion' in EDM. By no means I meant in terms of security

Actually, although the ranking is a bit ridiculous (especially when it's like #22 vs. #75 bullshit), I generally understand why the top 20 DJ's are where they are. And for the most part their calibre of DJ skills is justified by their "elite" status.

I realize it's absurd comparing Tiesto and Danny T (especially in styles, clubs they play, etc), but imo they both belong in the Top 20 and the poll does justify that.

Posted by Scoops on Oct-10-2007 15:18:

anyone who uses this poll to base DJs on their skills needs to take a step back, shut off the computer and walk their ass backwards into on coming traffic

These polls are nothing more then marketing tools and just cuz a DJ dropps a few spots doesn't mean his stock is goin to go down nor does it mean that his booking fee is going to go down.

Look at Jonathan Peters and his DJ times award for best DJ in American in 2006. Is JP really better then DT. Fuck NO but he did get more gigs out of it including a headling spot at Space during WMC and Rehab in Vegas. But it kinda backfired on him cuz he got boo'd off both times

Bingo.

That obviously doesn't excuse this kind of cheating, but seeing as how it was the same marketing manager in both cases, I'm more inclined to blame him than I am to blame the DJs. It's possible that he offered to cheat for both of them and they both accepted, but it seems more likely to me that he just went ahead and did it without their knowledge or consent.

Dude, I don't know how you can say this. The truth is, we have no idea. I personally find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that these two djs didn't know about this, particularly since they probably hired this marketing manager to work on things like building a brand, advertising, website development, email blasts, improving their djlist rankings, etc. Not having the proper oversight on people who work for you is NOT a valid excuse.

IMO, these guys should be penalized in every way possible by some of the key players in the industry. I dunno, perhaps ban them for a couple of years from WMC or other big events or festivals. They should be definitely be disqualified from every industry ranking or list for at least two or three years.

Stuffing the ballotbox is total bullsh*t, and CL and DJ Dan need to be held accountable, whether they knew about this or not.

You don't think thats a little extreme?

I think they need to determine first whether or not knew about this. You don't think it would be unfair to punish if they had no knowledge and were completely unaware of the ballot rigging?

Yeah I see what you're saying, but the beauty about scandal is that it's still publicity. IE: Paris Hilton can now charge more per appearance thanks to her jail drama being front page news for almost 2 weeks.

DJ Dan and CL have more publicity now then they ever would have simply placing in the top 10. lol Think about it, how much did you know about how Christopher Lawrence before opening this thread?

My point is that they are likely to see their booking stay the same, or perhaps even increase. Honestly, I want to see Christopher Lawrence now again lol

I totally agree with jon jon here, there still getting publicity good or bad ppl are still talking about them and it's not their music that is in question so I think it'll increase their bookings rather then decrease them .... unlike that peter hook guy.

I think it is naive to think that they didn't ask their marketing manager, "How did that happen? What did you do?", when they showed up as #5 and #6 on the list. C'mon they HAD to know something fishy was going on. Not that they are likely ever going to admit it. Perhaps the marketing manager will turn on them, who knows?

Regardless, even if they didn't know, I think they should be held accountable. Such is life when sh*t goes down on your watch.

lol, no.

Scandal has probably destroyed more careers than it has enhanced.

Paris is special -- she gets naked.

Posted by jon jon on Oct-10-2007 16:35:

so you don't subscribe to the theory that "any publicity is good publicity"?

Posted by jon jon on Oct-10-2007 16:40:

Martha Stewart
James Frey
Britney Spears

This off the top of my head in 10 seconds, I could do this all day Andrew.

Obviously it depends on the scandal but I truely believe in this case their DJ careers are well on place to stay healthy for years to come. lol
