My statements come from one who has read both the Bible and Koran and reads,writes, and speaks both hebrew and arabic. And you can go to heaven without ever having read the Bible or having gone to church. Catholic and Christian teachings say that the way to heaven is by a relationship to God through his son, Jesus Christ. This goes into slightly deeper levels of Christianity, but when you say it isnt fair that everyone but people who have been saved by God die on judgement day, its slightly off. Now you actually have to believe in God to have this make sense to you, these words fall upon deaf ears so to speak if you do not believe. If you saw what God sees in those who have not had their sins repented, you would see a dark, twisted, scaled creature of the soul. Sin is not a beautiful thing, it is evil. So God see us as our spirits, not our bodies. It is the spirit that he is killing, that dark twisted creature. So non-christians at that point wouldnt just be people who lived good lives and are still getting killed, they are people who chose either God or Satan, and it is one or the other, it is one of those for or against things, and by not choosing God they have chosen Satan and been twisted. Again, this might be difficult to understand, and atheists wont care because they dont believe in God, but that explains that part. I dont want this to be a sermon about change your life and you are wrong, but this is kind of how the doctrine of these churches work. Maybe this will drive the story home. There is a sweet, 70 year old librarian. She gardens in her spare time, teaches children how to read, and never does anything wrong. She does not really believe in God, she thinks something might be out there, but she never really cared, and she figures that if she is good, shell be happy in whatever comes next. Question: Does she go to heaven when she dies? Answer:No. Again, this is for people who believe in God. Atheists and Agnostics dont respond. This is an explanation of the doctrine. If it seems harsh, it isnt really, but youd have to have a pretty deep knowledge and belief of the Christian religion and our relationship to God to understand why. Dont take this as me telling you "You are going to Hell" Im just telling you some thoughts that go into the mix.

i heard that einstein...one of the greatest minds in history even said after doing all of his research and studies that there had to be a God...everything is too intricate and the world is like a formula..there HAD to be a creator..and honestly if you said "im living and thats all i care about" you need to think deeperabout your existence here...and see what you come up with...cant hurt ya right? btw im christian =]

Stephen Hawking, pretty much the most insanely brilliant person on earth is a Christian. If you want your mind blown read this guys stuff. He is the guy in the wheel chair who cannot talk and uses a computer to talk for him and has made the craziest discoveries. The point isnt that hes Christian, but that he believes in a creator. If you want to ask what does a mathematician know about gods, read his stuff and find out what work this man does. Im not going to try to paraphrase it.

If you want to understand this go to a pastor. Its complicated and is a deeper level of Christianity. Im not going to go into it with someone who doesnt believe and isnt open minded about it. And if you say im open minded the ...some equality thing is a very close minded statement, you already made your judgement. But again, if you are truly and honestly saying WHY? ask someone who knows. Because if not understanding the Bible is your only reason for not believing and you are willing to risk the eternity after your life on the fact of "I dont get it! I give up!" thats your choice of course , but maybe one that should be re evaluated.

well i am a true believer in god and a proud christian . if u r an athiest then u have no clue why do we believe in god. although i never saw him. i could feel him around me watching over. i have seen miracles done in his name. The best experience ever is when i attended a mass given by the pope. i felt my spirit lifted up and was the best experiences ever. i try to do my best to follow his instructions and guidance. Science cannot explain everything.It cannot explain miracles, it cannot explain how a virgin gave birth.
so dont use this as an excuse. I am great believer in science and logic but they dont explain everything.


Question for those who dont believe in god. Why dont u steal? why dont u kill? why dont u rape? what is ur purpose in life? what guides you? is there any purpose for you? do u help the less fortunate? if yes why/

wow that is sad that so many of you dont believe in god and only care that ur alive....pretty selfish..but we are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions..i dont have much respect for those that dont though i can't help it...

I think religion is a selfish, ignorant mindset that has been nothing but opium for humanity. (Nice quote Marx, too bad your communism idea was really dumb)

Christianity says that they are better than 4/5'th of the world, and that a selfish, bombastic, all controlling God, created a puzzle of events all in coordinates to make a group of humans go into a Heaven, and the rest into a Hell.

I think it's a security blanket that keeps people tranquil, but also ignorant and misleaded.

If you are not a Christian, but are a Jew or Muslim, I appologize. You just sounded like a casual-christian, and my assumption is my fault.

because there are consequences, and as an emotional creature, I have thoughts and feelings too.

I would cringe at the thought that the only reason people don't rape and plunder because a God is watching them!
If someone proved to you that God didn't exist, if one day you realized you weren't going to Hell, would you go crazy and rape/steal/screw around? That is very short-sided, playing society by the rules offers a much greater reward than by trying to splurge on the notion that society is a game, and in the bare-bones essence of it, means nothing.
Also, many God-fearing men raped and plundered over time, just showing that men believe what they want to, and not what's correct.

Well, my purpose...to have a great time, and learn as much as i can. My existance IMHO, is much more exciting than one a Christian feels. New discoveries are happening every week, we are piecing together the Universe's puzzle.
Rather than trying to comply the Universe with an age-old idea, everything is out in the open. Although many Christians refuse to hear Athiest written books or "propaganda", I read lots of Christian material.

I feel like i am a decent person. I do not think I am selfish. I am not a charitable person, but I have my own morals. (although they are not on the little things that many religous persons dwel on, i am flexible with my behavior.)

I don't want to get robbed, or killed or raped. Simple as that. Apart from laws preventing me to do it. i think that humans are smart enough to have figured out that we are stronger as a community, and in order for such a community to work, rules were established.

I am aware that Altrusim is something that does not exit. I do help the less fortunate sometimes, sometimes i do not. Why?
i could be worse off and I would help the less fortunate. I get the "warm & fuzzy" feeling when helping less fortunate people, because society has coined me that way. i am aware that a person, who is less forutnate than me, might be in that position due to bad luck. Helping him, might give him a second chance.

great topic...i'll make my post short...a couple of yrs back i woulda defended my religion...said 'hey...there is a god...'...well not anymore...so many things in religion are all bout the 'mysteries' of things...man...seriously...after havin the most depressin 2 yrs of my life...i lost it...gave up on goin to church...i used to go every single week...but not anymore...its rare...hmmm...but i do believe in him...or her ...i guess its jus there for reassurence...

I do beleave in God (although I don't go to church). It is nice to beleave in something...

I agree with Drizzt. Although we have opposing viewpoints we both have brought opinions and REASONS for the opinions to the table. Flat out statements just piss people off. The only reason for claiming something in that way is to say "I believe in something that you dont" back it up and give insight into your decision or you are just going to look like a contentious person whos only goal is to proclaim your difference.

Is the Bible just a book, or is it the word of God, and creation is true?

Remember, that means God planted the fossils of evolutionary links and made them look aged, and made aged light shine on the earth, and make an entire, huge universe in which the Earth is a speck upon a speck in size, and made the Universe start and end with the Earth's beginning and end, even though the Earth appears to be in a very small timeframe compared to the Universe.

All of this as a puzzle to trick nonbelievers. Who believes the Creation rubbish? If not, are you still a Christian? What parts of the Bible do you believe and what parts don't you believe? How do you know what's true and what's not....

FACE IT YOU DON'T KNOW. Don't assume you know there is a God or not, don't assume you know our Creation! Religion is hogwash.

I was raised Catholic, but dont practice any religion anymore. I took Biology in school, and am convinced that Evolution is the correct theory. At the same time, in high School, I had the fortunate benefit of being taught by an excellent Theology teacher. He had a PHD in Theology, and really opened my mind up to religion as a whole (I went to a catholic HS, and this teacher helped me shape my own beleifs, which are somewhat different than what the Catholic religion preaches).

He also stated something which made complete sense to me. You dont have to choose either Creation, or Evolution. You can believe them both, depending on how strict, or liberally you want to interpret the bible. Im no expert on the scripture, so perhaps Orbax would be better to comment, but I know that in Genesis, it was said that it wasnt until a few days after God created the universe, that he created night and day. So before that happened, there was no way to determine what a day was. So the first few 'Days' of creation, could have lasted an indefinite amount of time. Also, saying 'Days' of creation could just be metaphor for the time it took for God to create the universe. Also, making 'Man' in the image of God, could be a metaphor for saying that God is life, and life comes from Nucleic Acids, Cells, proteins and enzymes.

Despite what I have said, I still believe Darwins theory, because to me, it makes absolute sense. I can visualise Evolution, and appreciate the beauty of natural selection, survival of the fittest, sexual selection, specialist vs generalist, environmental niches, phenotypic plasticity etc. etc... But just because I have strong beliefs in Evolution, doesnt mean that I believe Creation Theory is BS, because as I mentioned earlier, I still fits with my beliefs.

The smithsonian has over 45 million fossils and not a single one is a transitional fossil. Evolution has so many holes in it that its painful. This day of the year 2002 the question of how did we go from asexual to sexual reproduction, from single cell to multi-cell, and things how how when a fetus has about 100 IDENTICAL cells do some start turning into a brain and some into intestines. You can search all you want, but in my research I study atheistic and evolutionary stuff too if nothing other than to find answers to the sometimes difficult questions they pose. I also have talked to professors of the UW and read books by PHDs in the fields of evolutionary biology that were recently published and they aways say "...still dont have an answer" The main thing is this. Micro evolution is a fact. We have observed it and tested it, it works. Macro evolution breaks down when you get to the cellular level. Besides all of the animals that defy evolution (type in Creatures that defy evolution in a search and then go and try to find an answer on how they could have evolved) the cells in our bodies are so inexplicably complex that they defy evolution themselves. It is a thing called irreducible complexity. If you were missing just ONE part it would be useless and surely maladaptive and not get passed on. A mouse trap is an example of an irreducibly complex object. Our bodies are full of them. A PHD biologist says that people will ultimately judge neo-darwinism as "a minor twentieth-century religious sect within the sprawling religious persuasion of anglo-saxon biology". Also evolution has yet to answer the Cambrian explosion which is a mathematical impossibility. This is when insane amounts of animals just appeared out of the blue. Evolution has no answer because it is honestly just impossible in evolutionary terms. The only reason as I see it that people still believe in evolution is ignorance. They dont have a deep working knowledge of it. One book you should all read is "Darwins Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution" Then try to tell me that you still believe. That one book isnt all though and dont think im trying ot limit you to that. But if you are trying to be a true knowledge seeker read the best of both sides and see which leaves the biggest gaps. It isnt even close. Ive done so much research on this it makes my head spin and I have never had anyone be able to answer these questions. And I doubt anyone ever will.


and yes part of the argument is that "day" just meant "a period of time" and new age/old age earth is a debate among christians, either way God is still possible.

I believe all of the Bible. It states that it is infalliable and any part false makes it all false.

and the Bible specifically says that God created the species distinct and different from eachother it leaves no evolutionary interpretation,

im going to go watch SCRUBS now.

This has no proof attached to it. So far it is just opinion. Now, if you are stating evolution as your religion, your faith in it is admirable because I can tell you that I will never have that level of faith in anything. But if you are putting into scientific terms we need a little more in the way of facts and stuff. So if you are putting it in faith thats cool I guess, but dont lay faith in scienctific "facts" and then not show any of them

oh last thing. Im saying bring facts to the table and dont just state your opinion any more because this thread has progressed wayyyy beyond that hehe read the previous pages... got pretty in depth. So we are looking for something to battle about now. We already are debating the issue of God, so belief/non belief at this point can be summed up by your vote on the poll and the post isnt neccessary lets keep it fresh

But u have to admit... most wars are caused by or due to religions !!

Oh, and my reason for not believing in god is because i believe the big bang stuff... and i believe everything just IS... if their wad a god, would earth really be the shit hole that it is ?

I appreicate that u probably believe in God and follow religion very closly... that doesnt matter to me at all... and im sorry i probably did sound a bit ignorant for not posting a reason for why i think wut i do... but ur response wut pretty dayum lame
