There is a certain (large) group of people that thrives on constant interruptions - mainly because the alternative is having to actually pay attention and get something done. All of these phone etiquette violations are manifestations of the same personality trait.

Distractions are crack for the fundamentally lazy. Not only do those people get to do something else, but they have a convenient excuse for why they aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing. Of course it eventually becomes a compulsion, and they start to do it even when they're not necessarily trying to avoid the activity they're engaged in.

Any communication or entertainment technology - cell, SMS, Internet - creates one more potential distraction. For each one, this same group of people will obsess over it nonstop. This wasn't so bad when the technology was too big for people to carry around, but cell phones changed all that, and now we see the results: people who are perpetually distracted, no matter where they are or what they're doing.

SMS is a worse habit though, because you don't know what somebody's calling about when your phone rings. It could be important, however unlikely that is. However, there's no implied urgency to an SMS, and rarely an explicit emergency in the text itself, so people who insist on replying anyway have no excuse for not waiting.

Cell phones are an annoying invention, but I think SMS wins the grand prize. I'm not sure if I've ever seen someone using SMS for anything truly useful and necessary.

I totally agree with this cell phone debate.

I love people that are in shock that I don't have a cell phone. "How do you not have a cellphone.. I could never do that!"... "I'm not cool enough to own one"

It helps that I hate the traditional phone as well. I'd rather talk to someone in person or on msn/facebook rather than having a phone stuck to my ear.

The slave analogy is dead on. People walking around sending texts.. it's like their following the cell around like a baby.

As long as everyone else as a cell phone, I don't think it's a necessity for me. I can get a hold of other people when I want to this way as well. As for them getting a hold of me when they need me.. oh well.. not my problem

Oh? I didn't research the background of this youtube video. Someone on irc linked me to it and I watched it and thought, "Hmm. Reminds me of the argument on TA!" So I posted it.

It just goes to show how annoying cellphone useage can be.

im not sure i understand your theory.

you are not fond of owning a cell phone because your not "cool enough". its not about being cool, its simply a matter of convenience. good luck using msn/facebook when your car breaks down in -40 degree weather, or when someone near you needs to call 911 for whatever emergency (it happens).

if all your friends shared your idea, you'd be quite the isolated bunch.
as i always tell people the phone wasnt made for people to get a hold of you, its made for you to get a hold of people.

Various system/network alerts of a critical nature get sent via SMS to my phone for me to action. SNMP trap linkDown, coldStart, etc, etc.

think about it: without anyone of these the world would be completely different.

Computers should be number 1.

It depends on what you mean by a computer. IMO the silicon chip was a far more important advancement.

The "cool enough" line is just a joke to those people who actually think they're mr/mrs popularity who talk/text on their cell on all day long.

I'm well aware of how convenient cell phones are, which is why I'm probably getting one for christmas. Since I live all the way out in Belleville, I do a lot of long drives to my parent's house in Ajax/clubs in Toronto/gf in Hamilton. I know sooner or later I will be in a situation where I'll be kicking myself for not having one.

Not having a cellphone in today's world is kind of like sticking with a horse when everyone's moving on to cars.
