you can always use the time to announce drink specials, where you're going to be spinning at next, and shizz like that... a nice short breakdown every once in a while is a good thing. but yeah a 3 min. one is not good.

i recently started spinning some house remixes/mashups at my residency at a mainstream club where I am from. I buy stuff from www.dramamix.com and www.remixmafia.com. They have some decent mashups/remixes that work well in the club with the mainstream crowd. I also mix in top 100 house/electro stuff from beatport, as well as classics that any general audience would be familiar with and I am able to keep a steady dancefloor up until the hip hop dj's take over after me. I hated spinning the shit at first, but I really need the money and have found a creative way to meet the club goers in the middle.

And yeah...when playing house/electro to a mainstream crowd...keep the breakdowns to a minimum AND do not play the entire song. I usually stick with 3-4 minutes per song and only deliver the meat and potatoes.

Hey do you guys know of any sites that talk about hip hop mixing techniques? I have some versions of funkymix with the 32 beat intro and I'll play the intro at the phrase after the chorus then the first beat of a new phrase I'll just do a fast transition... once in a while I'll do a spinback which I don't like doing. I also find hip hop mixing a lil more difficult but a lot more fun compared to EDM mixing.

mixing techniques? yeah google it...

9/10 funkymixes have a 32 beat intro and then a 32 beat mashup. very easy to mix...

i taught myself how to mix hip hop. i didnt read much on the internet, just kept messing w/ it until i got it right and got good crowd response. i will tell you that phrase matching is VERY important w/ hip hop. so is creating your own style. it also helps to have software/hardware that you can make loops w/ because you dont want vocal overlaps and many intros are short...

If it's a MASH UP not a premade Mix, than NO! IT's not cheating. That's actually a very HOT Thing in the hip hop world right now. But if it's just a premade mix, than YES, that's cheating.

lol I was hoping you were the one that answered, since you do a lot of gigs and top 40 stuff. Yeah all the clubs I see in Toronto always play the same songs week in and week out, it's getting boring and repetitive. I'm planning to change that around with a bunch of mash-ups that I bought. Just didn't know if people will be like "if he doing that live?"

That's what I would do if I was doing any more Top40 gigs. Its a bit of a surprise for the crowd, and it would have probably kept me from burning out so early in my residency (because playing the same songs all the time gets BORING, especially if you don't like any of them!).

I remember the Nine Inch Nails/50 Cent mashup worked really well
