nah you're not the only one, neither me nor farley care for it either, the flow is awful imo.

same w/ the love fest set - having literally been there and having him start out with supermayer - two of us, i was thinking that i was in for an epic set - which was not the case. i remember turning to jason at one point and saying "he lost me, i dunno wtf he's doin"
even hearing mongoose live didn't do it for me, as i realized that the track takes too long to progress in a live setting. if you listen to it in the bonnaroo set vs any other set where he plays it, the bonnaroo set he mixes into the track late, whereas he's now dropping it from the very start.

then i heard a bunch of awesome reviews about tribe which got my hopes up for the denver gig that was supposed to be on 10/20. only to hear the actual tribe set and was disappointed with that as well.

then he got "sick" and didn't show up for the denver gig [even tho he played the night before in houston] but i can't say that i was too bummed out about it because i had little to no expectations going into that based on the previous performances.

spooky was just ok, i didn't mind it that much because i don't typically listen to the type of music they were playing, so it was a nice change of pace.

afterhours with three is what made that 10/20 night special.

as you said and i'd agree he's lazy.

i thought they were good when they came to la. although i do like others better, it was still good imo. sasha and digweed last nye was really really awesome =).

im gonna find out one more time if sasha can rip it. he was allright here few weeks ago at webster hall but im sure on wednesday at love, since hes playing with three from 6pm-4am he will bring it. definitely will be a different type of set since love is alot smaller and intimate club with an insane system. definitely looking forward to it.

no he hasn't

that essential mix isn't even that fucking good. the first 30-35 minutes were great, then it became the usual "bleep bleep bloop dinka dinka dink *insert farting basslines*" droning monotonous crap. Digweed hasn't been any better than Sasha.

and rjt is known to be somewhat of an authority on boring music....

as for sasha, i really dont have an opinion. ive seen him twice, once for only 15 or 20 mins, the other time for like 3 hours. the 3 hour set was a whole lot of fun, but it was at a pretty shit venue with a pretty shit crowd.

its hard for a dj like him whos too expensive to play smaller underground parties and ends up getting booked in big fuckoff clubs for a couple hours. you cant do shit in that time period honestly. this is what livesets misrepresent. if i was booked in the same venue he was booked in in montreal my set would be a little on the more commercial side as well. it would just be the vibe. i dont think hes playing songs he doesnt like or sacrificing anything, just playing the gig he was booked.

maybe..

rarely has a 2 or 3 hour set every really taken me on any sort of journey anyways.

I've been of the same opinion for years now. 2002 and earlier, yeah, but I'm going to be totally upfront and say that I have never understood the hype around Sasha in the last five years. Not one bit. His sets just do nothing for me, and his whole advertising of "OMG CHECK IT OUT GUYS I USE ABLETON!!!!!!" leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

And I really don't understand how anybody in this thread can say, "he still knows how to rock a crowd." No. I'm going to do what a lot of you are going to hate me for doing and compare him to Oakenfold.

We all know just how much Oakenfold sucks now. That goes without saying. Yet he still sells-out venues and still has the crowd going "OMFG YES OAKEY WE LOVE YOU!" and they chant his name during every breakdown, despite the thousand boots in a tumbledryer, un-EQ'ed transition he just made. The crowd doesn't know any better. They're uneducated, and they're there because it's some guy who is really really famous and has made some legendary things in the past. They don't know what he's like now, and because of proper advertising they think he's a God among men.

That's just how I'm seeing it. Go ahead and call me whatever you want, but after seeing the effect Oakenfold has on a crowd and then seeing Sasha and how the crowd reacted, I stand firmly by my belief. Hell, I'll say the same about damn-near any DJ in the DJ Mag poll.

I've been saying similar things for absolutely years. And you can guarantee you'll always get some twerp saying something like this:

Journey my arsehole - I just want someone to make me want to uncontrollably dance like the idiot I am, and I could give fuck-all about the "journey" when I'm out at a club.

Talk like that is for people who still enjoy eating too many e-pillz in hopes that one day they'll actually reach those lasers.

i have no clue what your point is in this post. are you saying that because he hasn't listened to sasha sets since 2002, his opinion that sasha has become boring for the last couple years is moot, and that he has no idea if his sets have indeed become boring or not? even if he hasn't listened to any of his sets since 2002, its not like he's really missing anything.

You're talking to the guy who went all the way to Berlin in 2004 to see a 2 hour Sasha set! (Which was fucking amazing as it happens - The ONE exception to my post-2002 opinion of him.)

Believe me, I've given him plentiful chances over the years, and he never delivers like he did for me when I saw him in 2000 and 2001; and listened to him on the radio in 99.

The problem when discussing Sasha is there are always those damn exceptions which make final opinions on him tough.

He destroyed Las Vegas in oct 05 when I saw him there, never seen anything close to that set by him since...

Danny Howells does both.

I'm guessing that's just a byproduct of his ability to rock a club proper rather than a genuine, concerned effort to create some absurd and pretentious journey.

Also, I do see the irony in the fact that many of you all feel I play pissboring-dickoff-fuckface techno/house/tech house and yet still feel comfortable criticizing Sasha for boring the tits off of me.

The only difference is, I have a tendency to try not to play pissboring-dickoff-fuckface techno/house/tech house if I'm playing anywhere near peak hour in a club.

Dude thats a seriously important difference

I too sometimes feel like Sasha is perpetually holding back, and thats cool sometimes, it can create tension and makes those heavy moments that much more amazing, but when you still have that feeling at 4am when the club is closing, theres something wrong

The whole night last Friday was effectively like masturbating and getting so close to cumming a number of times, but each time you were about to blast your precious load all of a sudden you were back to square one and massaging a limp penis back to life in a vain effort to make yourself sticky just once before bed.

which is how any respectable/halfway talented DJ should play imo. it's a shame sasha hasn't been on par with that lately.

the only thing i disagree with is when people say "sasha's latest essential mix was freakin amazing!!" and then complain when seeing him live- i thought his latest EM was boring as hell so i'm not at all surprised to hear that his latest sets have been the same. perhaps sasha's just trying something new genre-wise with his music and just failing miserably when playing it out. i dunno.

God, i hate that. somewhat on-topic, i thought involver (though i LOVED involver) and fundacion were both mixed the same way. builds very nicely for the first 20 minutes or so, then drops off and never comes back during the last half. end result = blue balls.

All I can say is...

I sure as hell miss the days when Sasha played tracks like:

Shmuel Flash - Chilling Moments
Brancaccio & Aisher - Everybody
Adam Dived - Head First
Tom Mangan - Chutney
Tijuana - Groove Is In The Air (Unreleased Moonface Mix)

Uh oh, I said it
