surprsingly often I think. Just reading through the last one of these threads that came earlier in the summer, a lot of the booking requests people made came to fruition.

I disagree Zack..If the issues were being addressed I'd never have made the thread...I want to know what Dj suits a particular venue...I also think that the response to the thread shows that people agree with me...

what issues?

bookings, djs, venues are all so subjective. Its not like for each dj there is always going to be THE perfect venue thats going to being everyone out for THE perfect night. In fact, in a lot of the replies, people list multiple venues for djs they'd want to see. Some people want to see Danny Howells at Shelter, some want to see him at Love...what does that tell you? Just that people seem to like Danny Howells and Love and Shelter are cool venues...no magical revelations were made though.

I don't like Shelter......sound might be good but the venue itself is ehhhhhh nothing special. The basement is pretty cool but the front door / coat check area is a pain in the ass.......so unorganized.

I wasn't expecting magical revelations and why would I???...Without even realising it you have just made my point for me,,thankyou...Maybe there will be some magical revelations,,who knows ???,,, the thread hasn't died yet...

not sure if I follow you on this one. That seems like the more localized picture. If you're trying to focus on only booking certain djs at certain venues, you're going to need thousands and thousands of replies to really get meaningful data.

The big picture to me would be taking a more general poll of what djs people want to see, take into consideration what venues people seem to like, and try and make something happen. my additional 2 cents.

Zack,,I'm reaching far beyond TA to formulate an opinion...I have three Dj's (all listed above) to put in three venues (all listed above) and 30 dates to try and put each DJ in each location...With the imformation provided so far I am 75% of the way there...

What you are telling me is getting taken on board...You are far more experienced than me so I respect your input....

Some DJs are known-enough and big-enough in New York City, and some aren't, that's all I'm going to say...


On the general topic, I'm going to have to side with Zack on this one, there's so much to take into account when doing parties, things that 20 people on a message board can't affect. There are questions like: is this venue in a part of town where people will pass by and maybe be curious to enter? does this venue have enough walk-in traffic to justify bringing a more underground DJ that isn't too known? When I look at two of my own parties, the TNY with Talla 2XLC, etc., and the Shelter with Preach, those are two opposite examples... One with mega walk-in traffic regardless of the party, which was a negative... And the other with absolutely no walk-in traffic for the music we had brought there that night. Sure, one can always get a few ideas here and there, but a few posts on TA praising Menno doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things when all is said and done, the expensive euro (not dollar) fee is paid, and he is behind the booth of some of these clubs in a city that doesn't know him... Not to single him out, and not to sound like such a downer, but it's an unfortunate reality that some random DJs in Brooklyn, Westchester or Staten Island have more of a pull in this city than 80% of the DJs listed... wish the situation were different, but I also wish luck in whoever does parties (and support whoever I can, because I know what it's like to be in those shoes)...

I agree... Working nights from one venue to another one to another one, and switching up breaks up the flow of things... Every venue is different... You've got dick security here, a bad bathroom there, a shady afterhours crowd at the other one, so many complaints... When you settle into a venue, like you have at LOVE, you get people used to a good thing. If you asked this question to people 2 years ago, I don't think there would have been 1/10 of the people mentioning LOVE with some of these DJs (it would have been like "Digweed @ Crobar", etc.... So cheers on that Zack, and once again, I agree with you haha

And to eleborate on my first reply, so people don't take me the wrong way.... Sean Tyas has some mystical draw here in New York City, always a big and energetic crowd... So New York promoters bring him back. Dave Seaman rocked the house @ Core's last party with him (from what I heard), so they bring him back... Most promoters are pretty similar in how they work, there's no real discrepancies (between promoters on this site, at least) in how much effort, time, and soul they put into their parties... but some DJs "hit the spot" and others can't quite do it... Some DJs have more of a root and foundation built in New York City (which helps the success of their appearances) and some don't, no matter what the venue is or promoter involved.

Marcello, as usual, +1 on everything you said.

I think the hardest thing as a promoter is to balance someone you want to see vs. someone who will pack out a club. There are some amazing producers that I think would absolutely murder a packed club musically, but if they're well-known within NYC, you're up the creek. New Yorkers don't like risk paying $20 to get in, then another $6-$10/drink to hear a DJ they don't already know. That's why in my opinion there's somewhat less variety than there could be in big rooms in NY. Almost every DJ out there wants to play NY, so that's not really the issue, but New Yorkers like familiar names, and those familiar names tend to be extremely expensive...haha. I will say though, that Made is doing a great job of bringing some more underground talent to NYC.

On the Core side, we try not to repeat our booking too much, as that's sort of how things get stale, but yes Dave did quite the number on Love (which was very packed that night), so we couldn't say no when the opportunity arrived to bring him to Rebel.

Overall, I honestly think NYC is finally getting some momentum back, and is continuing to keep EDM at the heart of the city's music. I honestly think if a few more big rooms open up with EDM featured on a fri/sat night, we could almost be back to the good ol' days by the end of '09. It took time for the clubs to work through the new regulation, but it's time for the madness to return.

We got Dj's,,Venues and dates available to us so I'm gonna do my best to see if I can make a few things happen...However after a few minor set backs and let downs lately I aint gonna build my hopes up...If it happens it happens,,if it don't it don't..I'm certainly not gonna lose any sleep about it...

If I needed advice to how to run SunnySideUp I,d phone you guys or hit you up on AIM...I sit and wait on line waiting for Yourself,,Zack or Michael to log on to get your opinions and advice...

This thread wasn't designed to piss anyone off..It just interested me to see what people think....
