Fine, the E70 may have most of the 'inventions' in the iPhone, but saying that good design (especially of a product that you will use everyday) is irrelevant is completely absurd. The fact of the matter is, Nokia have done it first, but Apple did it better. Start with the actualy physical appearance the phones, and we can both agree that E70 looks terrible, and the iPhone doesn't, right down to the actual GUI.

It's not irrelevant to the consumer, but it is irrelevant when we're talking about best INVENTIONS. There are awards given out to products for best design; I'd have absolutely no qualms about the iPhone winning that a best design competition.

"Improving on whats out there". So you agree then, that Apple has done it better? Design wise, marketing wise, and actually making people want it?

Design-wise, yes.

Marketing is mostly done by the hype Apple products receive in general. I'm in the opinion that Apple could start selling white bread, and people would still talk about it till your ears bleed.

Usability-wise, though, I'm not so sure. I like traditional phones a little bit more. For one, i can hit buttons without looking at the screen, and I don't have to wipe the screen of fingerprints everytime I use the phone.

Honestly, tell me that you would use that piece of shit (E70) over an iPhone. If they're both sub-par with the technology, which one would you choose?

I'd choose the iPhone, but that's because I can resell it for more.

You're missing the point - I'm not saying the iPhone is shit. It's overpriced, but it is a very nice toy to have. That said, it doesn't deserve "invention of the year" by even a long stretch. Just because a lot of people are talking about it, doesn't mean there was a lot of inventing going on there.

I'm with Cosmic. It's a good invention but it shouldn't have won best invention. It should have one the best design award. As all the features were available on other phones ages before the iphone.

I find that an unlikely story as the air pressure is less in the air than at sea level. So unless they're cracking in your pocket from the air pressure while at sea level, they're not cracking in the air.

Yeah they were cracking inside ppl's pockets during flights.

The 1st gen Treo 600 had that prob, but it was fixed right away. Remember the Treo 600 was made years and years ago.

That's not what it says here (in terms of platforms...):

And this is just the beginning. Platforms are for building on. Last month, after a lot of throat-clearing, Apple decided to open up the iPhone, so that youmeaning people other than Apple employeeswill be able to develop software for it too. Ever notice all that black blank space on the iPhone's desktop? It's about to fill up with lots of tiny, pretty, useful icons.

The iPhone doesn't even deserve to be labeled an "invention"

saying an iPod is an invention is like saying Edison invented electricity...

I've had my Treo 650 for about two years now. It has a touch screen (yes, a perfectly good one), an SD slot currently holding a 2 GB card (which by the way, the iPhone doesn't support), an MP3 player, an NES/SNES emulator, a camera, and a dozen other useful 3rd party apps/games. The web browser looks exactly as you'd expect a web browser to on that size screen, and if I don't like it, I can always install Opera Mobile, which is at least as good as Safari.

Oh, and it's also unlocked GSM, supports GPS applications, and is built tough enough to withstand a bit of a drop.

So what exactly did Apple add? Oh yeah, the WICKED-ASS TOUCH SCREEN! Because it's not just any touch screen, it like, ACTUALLY SENSES TOUCH! And the web looks so much better with Apple's shitcake anti-aliased text! Oh, and, and, and... WIFI! Even though nobody actually uses it, and it drains the battery instantly, it's important for some reason! And just forget about the fact that every smart phone made since 2006 has had it!

Yeah... it looks nice. That hardly qualifies it for an "Invention of the Year" award.

You forgot that the screen adjusts itself depending on how you hold the phone. Craziness

I can understand why you may not be impressed with the iPhone OS, you actually like the Palm OS.

Palm OS is amazing. So much you can do with it and there's so much apps for it

Yeah but that's their fault. A cracked scree on an electronic device is a common thing.

It is?? I must be having some good odds then cause I've never dealt with that issue.

Posted by DSQUARED2 on Nov-09-2007 05:45:

Well its just pressure. If you have your keys in your pocket which is pressed up against your phone/mp3 player etc. Once you sit down pressure is applied and BAM you're in for a new LCD.

Or you have to get a new one... either way you're SOL.

If you actually find a feature that is not on other portable deviecs, come back, but please learn whats out there.

Again any PPC using Windows Mobile, can run Opera, which is just as good as iPhone's (stripped down)Safari browser. Opera even allows you to change your settings to fool webpages into thinking it's a desktop, so you can get at more content.

As for wifi, again, please do your research. Most smart phones now come with built in wifi (ex. Toshiba g900).

All of these smart phones, have a fully senstive touch screen. The entire surface area, entire resolution is availble for use by the finger. It is up to software coders to develop apps which take advantage of the extra input interface.

I have been using Resco software, which allows you to do anything with your picture. Crop, zoom, brighten, contrast...omg, all with your finger! Just use the touch screen!

Storage? How about actually putting an SD card slot in your iPhone, rather than being limited by the built in memory. If you want to give somebody else a picture, you need to hook up to a computer, or 'conveniently' email, or send a picture message ($$$).

If you want to make a point about how intuitive the interface is, please do so. If you want to compare features, then stop because we have seen everything before (yes even google maps). They created an INTERFACE, not a phone, or a set of bundled features.

ahahahah... so why isnt the world anticipating your phone????

Give me a breeak buddy.. you can get as technical as you want.. but this beautiful design is nothing compared to ANY phone ive seen. Even the Japanese want this so bad!!!!

The quality of the screen is the most brialliant thing ive seen on any device its size.. you cannot compare it to your phone one bit.. whatever youre phone is?

Plus this thing has sick video quality!!

i mean it is amazing. but the fact that it's locked into AT&T. plus the slower network. i mean there is lots of room for improvement and i bet the improvements will come so fast we won't even know what hit us.

Yes... becuase rogers is so greedy. When i first heard of "data plans" i started to laugh. 200 Megabytes for a certain $$?? I cant even fathom how selfish this stupid rogers is to COUNT megabits and bytes and charge people.

Rogers will not allow unlimited internet on phones like AT & T does.. thats why Europe has got the iphone before us even though we are neighbors to the US. ROgers simply cant stand the fact of lowering their evil rates.

Apple wants people to use this phone without raking in $5000 bills every month for watching several youtube clips

I really dont know what deserves the invention of the year.... i dont know what was actually invented this year to make a decision..

But i think this phone has set the bar WAY high now. Whether people like it or not.. this innovation has had a huge impact on the gadget industry.

When you have people gasping infront of you when you show them the cool features of the phone.. you know you have a great fucking toy!!!

exactly. great fucking toy. thats all this thing is. won't argue there. but its not deserving of such a title from a supposed "respectable" publication.

but hey, i'm sure this "award" had a pretty positive effect on the demand and publicity for the iphone. just look at this thread.
