FL certainly does not suck.
I am using Cubase too right now, and I was extremelly impressed with all the features that come with Cubase, compared to FL, of course, you need to compare prices too, FL with good Vstis and Tools is as powerful as any other Sequencer.
Dont blame your Hardware neither, I only have a pentium 4 2.4, 512 of RAM, and a Realtek integrated soundcard, I did not have even a MIDI controller, until 2 months ago when I finally managed to buy one.
The key is to do a good use of your resources, until you get the gear you want, if your PC is old, few resources, focus into do Beats, and Basslines and become a pro on that.
EDIT:
I was about to get involved into the FL sucks battle, then I took the care to read the whole thread, then I gave up, I say, if people thinks it sucks, good for them, properly used obviously does not, so why to argue about, just use it and let others to think whatever they want to think about, is not like someone is slandering my Mom or sort of
.
Kopi =o.

Fl has got to be one of the best bits of software that you can get for producing electronic dance music, its so quick to do the simple things & also has some very cool tools. i have been a logic pro user for the past 3 years now & i am now about to buy & setup a pc for using Fl because its so quick and easy to use, the only thing that i didn't like about Fl is arranging & mixing a track on it. i am however going to keep logic pro for my arrangement, mix-down & general polish because i prefer the way logic is for this part of production. also i wouldn't get rid of logic unless i got shot of my hardware synths as i am let to believe that Fl can be a complete pain in the ass for hardware support
