here's a bassline i use in my newest track:

DOWNLOAD

i layered 5 different bass sounds, playing 5 different basslines.
the single basslines are quite simple. they usualy go like this:

k---k---k---k---
xx-xxxx-xx-xxx-x
--y----y--y---y-

or

k---k---k---k---
---x-x-x----x-xx
yyy-y-y-yyy--y--

or

k---k---k---k---
x-x---x-x--x--x-
-y-yyy-y-yy-yy-y

k = kick
x = bass at high octave
y = bass at low octave

just play around with different "rhythms", and you'll get a nice groove into your basslines.

it's very easy to make intresting bl -s in FL Studio
1. in file c:\Program Files\FLStudio4\System\Config\Chords.map
u add string ",one note,"
2. in FLS run randomizer with range 2(3)
3. press seed til u get some cool bl

if bl is too complex u can set beats per bar to 2...

Posted by thecYrus on Mar-30-2004 14:06:

my favourite bl:

KbBbKbbBKbBbKbbB

K = Bassdrum
b = Bassnote
B = Bassnote one octave higher

Cool

if u have a low bass note hitting at the same time as a kick, take the low end out or it will clash with the kick and 1 or both will give way

yeah, that's true! but i wouldn't even use a bassnote at the same time..

most of my basslines involve a sub-offbeat and at least 1 rolling one on top of that, the rolling one with a hp/bp ran over it or just the low end eqed out, fits the way i work my leads for now anyways heh

hi every1! How about to share house basslines?

Thanx in advance!

Posted by azndragon0613 on Apr-22-2004 02:52:

i typically use many different instruments to make a bassline...
something in the bottom maybe like kick bass kick bass. usually a low omph sound to keep rhythm...then i usually add another bassline or two to it to give it that fullness

i've got a sample.. check it out..here

Coming in from a completely different background (jazz/blues and metal), I've been experimenting with bass lines that have double hits at the end, and also syncopate in anticipation of a buildup.

best way for me to do this would be to show a pic (I like to work in A minor BTW)

Here is an example of a bass line that I've been working on. the actual notes in the bass line are 2 octaves below what's written, but I didn't want to deal with the mess of ledger lines.

(pic will probably expire after 3 days)

Perhaps www.houseaddict.com would be better for that

All joking aside... I seem to recall (and could easily be wrong) that a lot of house basslines evolved from jazz/blues/soul basslines. That should be a good starting point.

The track im developing at the moment has a bassline like this

Main Bass Sound:

K---K---K---K
--bb--bb--bb-

---------

The a rolling bass if you want to call it that:

K---K---K---K
-bBb-bBb-bBb-

with the 'B' an octave higher than the 'b' and is not as high in volume as the main bass sound above

And dont forget to use DELAY effect in basslines!!!!

You gotta be careful with that, though. Too much delay and it all gets muddy. I prefer to just create 'delay' effects with proper note placement, as I find that easier, and less prone to problems down the road.

A nice touch of reverb, however, goes a long way.

Posted by thecYrus on Apr-22-2004 21:07:

... and never use stereo delay on deep frequencies!

Posted by solitude on Apr-22-2004 21:30:

about delays on basslines, i thought i might submit a technique to solve this problem in Reason 2.5: It's pretty easy, just connect a RV-7000 to the bassline, then select the 'EKO RollingFiltMultiTap' preset from the soundbank. basically it allows you to control you the frequencies of the delayed notes, so you can cut out the bass to avoid muddiness. With some tweaking this sounds good!

Solitude, that's exactly what I do...works wonders.

Here's a very simple sample.

Here's another one I made...this is one of my favorite basslines:

Using delays on basslines is the shiznit. You just have to know how to do it.

Man, this is an awesome thread.

Basslines do drive a song through and keep the groove going. I used to always use the "oompa" bassline style, but then I discovered how much a line based on 16th notes can make the track much more flowing. Those are some pretty cool suggestions, but if you really want to be completely original, just play around on a measure in the sequencer you use with 16th notes and see what line you can come up with that makes you feel good. The second and fourth idea really is a smart move though.

This thread is gold...lots of help for the new guys. I'll keep posting other basslines to help out. Hopefully others will do the same.

Rico, those b-lines are gorgeous. My ears probably aren't as good as yours, though. How did you create them?

Oh, and I'm liking the melody over the second one. Sounds like that could be very pretty trance.

Posted by Sloouh on Apr-25-2004 12:02:

Always keep low sounds panned dead centre, a panned low bass sound will quite often skip the needel.

When I create basslines I will layer, one layer with a highpass filter on it set right down low so I can use FX without it being too muddy. The other a lowpass to keep it low and rhymical.
