It's not quite that exciting. Close, however.

*bump*

So what's the deal guys, are we doing this or what?

Posted by goodgreef on Jan-01-2008 22:38:

is this turning to be a "ta core book club"? I like it. Maybe I'll pick up the "beast of no nation" one next time i'm at the library... or bookstore.

Yeah fuck it, my interest is already piqued. I'm gonna grab it this week and read it with or without you bastards.

Posted by goodgreef on Jan-01-2008 22:44:

I finished it last week and immediately called an old high school teacher to make him read it this weekend so we could discuss it. Be warned though, it deals with some pretty difficult things seen from the perspective of just a child.

But I definitely give it and would be down for discussing it!

Oh, and I was able to read it in a day, so it is indeed a very quick read.

What?

Did you go to a Christian School?

I read it in public school.

Weird.

I went to high school in suburban Colorado - Evangelical capital of the world, maybe - and it wasn't in our curriculum at all. Interesting how such a significant religious archetype for western consideration didn't make its way into our schedule. I wonder if it was decided against due to content. Or maybe it's considered blasphemy because it's not the literal word of the bible.

As a High School sophomore, we read stuff like The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath. And a plethora of poetry. Lots of Poe. My teacher was eccentric, but cool in that not-so-cool English teacher sort of way.

Just thought I'd share.

Maybe the Evangelicals hate the Catholic undertones in Dante? Dunno.

And now that I think about it, I read it junior year... sophomore year we spent on Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Poe, Hemingway, and Steinbeck.

Episcopal...we also read the Ramayana as freshman

I read Dante's Inferno in 9th Grade in Public School, but it was *hush hush*. It was on the BANNED BOOKS list, and our teacher was bent on reading banned books throughout the year (ironically including Fahrenheit 451)

As for my suggestion,
Philip K Dicks "Do Androids Dreams of Electric Sheep?"
1. Robots and shit
2. It doesn't seem that long. (~200 pages)

well anyways, that's what I'm going to read.

Blade Runner > "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

Which is rare, for the movie to be vastly better than the book, but they are actually very different stories. Not that the book isn't really good.
