I am so excited for Menno De Jong!

I love christopher lawrence as well, but I have seem him 2 or 3 times before and I haven't seen Menno before so the choice is clear for me.

Yeah, its been a while since Menno De Jong came to the US!
2 years ago he got deported on his way to a show in LA!

(INS said he didn't have a work permit so they sent him back)

We LA people were so mad, because everyone was freaking dying to see Menno De Jong!

So Menno, We are SO GLAD to have you back in the States!

I am sure you will rock my world on Saturday

Heading down to DC/VA area tonight

Posted by KAZEUS on Feb-08-2008 15:27:

what makes him so good? why r u guys dying to see them? i'm burned out from trance/clubbing right now and it seems like it'll just be a same night as before with latest trance tunes and such. i rather hear older tunes or something different. every week they play big sky, falling, bla bla and tired of that. anybody have like a track list from his latest live set? i'd like to see what he plays.

The NYTA Liveset Download Thread should have quite a few sets from him as well as his radio show/podcasts.

Im kinda in the same boat as you about trance/clubbing but somehow Menno always sounds 'fresh' to me. We're going down tonight and will be at FUR tomorrow, you should go also. JavD as I recall was a pretty good opener as well.

both!

Fur has a guestlist on its website.

Free before 11PM for those under 21
and free until 12AM for those 21+

And presales are $10 on groovetickets

Posted by KAZEUS on Feb-09-2008 04:05:

i recommend getting tix online, guest list can be unreliable so u have to pay $25 vs. $10 online

Posted by limin_li on Feb-09-2008 05:42:

I hate to hijack the thread. These 2 announcement from Pete Moutso must come this weekend. I've waiting all damn week.

+1 on the montreal!! cant wait to see MDJ in action after plans were altered this weekend woot!

Posted by tknoxtc on Feb-10-2008 23:39:

The night would have been totally different if mdj started his set with his last 30 minutes of set. Anymore, you missed it bro... but too little too late. I'm not saying he was bad, no, he was good, energetic... but something was lacking and bland. But the last 30 minutes were money!

Posted by phoenixBEBE on Feb-11-2008 02:20:

ooh reviews! i was HOPING to read some

a trip that ended up being a reunion with a lot of longtime DC/VA friends from various boards and some who were old school DCTAs. Met a few more new ones which was cool nice to meet you Vitamin-DLW at the house party we were both at, you are really chills and hope to meet up again the next time we are down in DC and maybe we will get to hang out at the main party together too bad we didnt get to meet the rest of the current DCTAS, but there is always next time!

Our objective had been to see MENNO at FUR; however, ended up with comps and clubhopping for our first time ever (thanks to our friends who apparently knew everyone at both clubs, LOL!! very unexpected!) between CLUB IBIZA (Christopher Lawrence) and then we hit up Menno at 130ish at FUR.

First time going to *both* clubs, FUR's main room was pretty spacious but i wasn't wowed when i went in (despite the fact it was nice to be in a big room club again since all of NYC nightclubs were closing down one by one). Also the sound was not consistent, there were times when I was wishing for earplugs. Menno WAS throwing down and VERY energetic, and maaan when he threw down "Heaven Scent" that was magical. As expected, it was trance all the way, however if you heard his 2007 Yearmix he threw down most of the songs he spun on there, plus some less recent tracks that were nice to hear. But overall the set was somewhat predictable as in most trance sets as of late from the top 5. I personally thought his appearance in 2006 at LOVE (DC) was much more notable than this one. We did have a lot of fun though especially with closing the party. Verdict: We certainly weren't disappointed but yeah, didn't find anything remarkably special about it. I can certainly admit that we probably aren't exactly the best ppl to be reviewing this party because over the past 2 years we slowly grew disillusioned with how simliar/predictable every trance set seems to sound as of late from the top djs.

I couldnt tell how the vibe at FUR was cuz it was hardly packed, there was a good handful of people but definitely a lot less than I expected to see at a party with Menno. Was this a 21+ night? cuz that would have explained it).

Otherwise the only OTHER explanation would be that IBIZA nightclub's gig with Christopher Lawrence may have taken most of the DC crowd away from this party because Ibiza definitely had long lines outside the club, and the main (trance) room was growing more and more packed as the night progressed -- although there was still room to dance.

And I dunno, i was completely sober for both parties, so in a way I was able to be objective with my observations -- As soon as I walked into IBIZA, I felt something i haven't felt in a long time; an instant liking for a megaclub space. (this hasn't happened for me since Roxy/ARC/Spirit). The sound was perfect, the dj booth setup was in the right place, and there was more than enough room to move around as the club had three floors and a rooftop space for ppl to chill -- all access. Christopher Lawrence was so on point it wasn't funny; had me dancing nonstop from the very moment he started up until I left. The vibe was definitely there and it soo reminded me of the days of old when I used to have fun clubbing and I cherished it greatly.

edited: Actually now that i think about it, I was certainly not **BORED** wtih Menno's set (and I have been somewhat bored with many a trance set by djs recently in NYC except for Ronski Speed at Webster), so I am going to adjust my original critique. There is NO denying he is a great talent and would have the potential to bring more of a crowd if he came to the US more often and was promoted thru the right people/channels at the *right* venue. Plus he is one of the most open djs ever when it come to his fans in more ways than one, very cordial in general and he actually remembers ppl who he's hung out with previously (my DC friends have accounted for this personally). Such great potential. While I am probably not going to be coming out much if at all this yr for any top 5 dj/big room parties, I would totally make it a point to come out for Mennos gig in NYC.

Posted by neogaia on Feb-11-2008 03:12:

Nope. Since September Fur has always been 18+ Friday and Saturday nights and Ibiza is 18+ as well on Saturday nights and their special Thursday events.

Very very fun night! I was there (and I am 18) and yeah I had a lot of fun and Menno was very chill but yeah there weren't as many people as I would hope there would be. I got there at 2AM and at that point Menno was throwing it down pretty well. I went freaking nuts when he played Heaven Scent! He played a good very fun set but it wasn't mind blowing. It was a very good fun trance set though By the end though he was much more energetic and jumping around and that upped the energy! I think it would have been a lot more fun if there had been more people. (and I think there would have been a lot more if the competition hadn't been Christopher Lawrence.)

I was up in the DJ booth most of the night. (I was the girl up there in the black halter and jeans.) It was very fun to be up there. It was more crowded than usual. Some people got kicked out of there though because they were swinging the big speakers.

Got an autograph from Menno and to shake his hand after the show so that was awesome.

We were going to go have breakfast with Menno at Denny's but the promoters or club owners insisted that he not go, cause he had a flight in the morning. But he is super chill guy in that he was willing to go hang out with us trance addicts/crazy clubbers at Dennys.

I am very glad I finally got to see Menno De Jong for the first time. I am really glad I went and can't wait to see him again! I hope he comes to the States more often.

Ah and I am so glad they had free glowsticks last night.

I'm not really in a review writing mood as I have to memorize 40 words for a Japanese quiz tomorrow. So I'll write a more extensive one tomorrow.

Oh and btw I saw he was recording the set so it should be available hopefully some time.

wait, seriously? cuz my friend Koong was trying to organize that get-together (we were hanging out with Koong the whole time), he actually called the promoters/managers, and then asked Menno personally if he wanted to go to Denny's again like they did back in 2006! Of course it was too bad about the early flight BUT understandable, but yeah Menno definitely was agreeable to it and I felt he was soo personable in that he spoke with Koong on the phone himself and even remembered him!! Drew n I were just listening to the conversation on speakerphone, amazed. hehe

i didn't go up in the dj booth cuz i was too busy dancing, but yes i saw how easily it was for ppl to go up in the dj booth as well, my bf Drew went up briefly to take pictures of Menno.

Hmm I hope ppl post pics up from the night! I'm sure Drew will put his up when he gets the chance.

Glad you had a kickass time Maybe we will have the chance to meet in person the next time we head down to DC again.

Posted by neogaia on Feb-11-2008 03:48:

Oh I probably saw you! I was hanging out with DLW and he was chatting with who i think Koong is. (We were hanging outside afterwards. We were a black guy (DLW) & a hispanic girl (me) and we started talking to a group of asian people outside of fur)

So I think we saw each other!

Dunno what happened with the whole Denny's thing, all I know was that Menno was willing to go, and I heard that the promoters or whomever else told Menno he probably should go to the hotel cause he had an early flight. So definitely thanks to your friend Koong for almost getting us to hang out with Menno!

Yeah hopefully I'll see you next time you are down in DC, or next time I am up in NYC
