Impossibility.

If your definition of liberty is the right to do whatever you want, it is inevitable that the actions of one individual will infringe upon the liberty of another. It's human nature. You can't always act the way you'd like, not because of a law or the government, but because the actions of those around you act as a constraint upon your own actions, limiting your options (and liberty).

yes, but come to think about it, it's actually ur own choice, understanding that ur actions might affect smb else

I quite seriously doubt you have peered over that threshold.

Perhaps freedom is a 'state of mind' or something equally as lighthearted and new-age prescriptive as that, as though anyone truly has an idea of how to attain enlightenment of that sort through will, alone, but you have not stood at that precipice where morality is no thing and everything you have ever learned or exhibited which ties you to others and to the world we live in has been dismissed as a matter of mere choice. No, you've not stood there before and none of us ever shall.

But by all means, freedom is just something you gain by altering some chemicals in your brain. Oh yeah, you're free there. Because what you feel is everyone else's reality and every indication that other people are affected by your actions is the illusion here. No doubt.

so, u think that ur actions do not affect people who surround u?

I don't think I realized until just now how much being a philosophy major has made me hate the word "freedom."

This is not, to say, that I don't think many of you posting in this thread are saying anything worthwhile - I just think I've done this one to death and it doesn't really interest me anymore.

Regardless, here's a quick summary of my opinion on freedom/free will: I don't think humans can possibly know whether or not it can or does actually exist, and as such I don't particularly feel that the fact we cannot prove whether true freedom exists is reason enough for us to all become fatalists.

As long as you keep in mind that I am being sarcastic 103% of the time, you shall never misinterpret what I am saying.

I GAVE YOU FAIR WARNING. I EVEN FORGAVE YOU ONCE. NOW LOOK WHAT I HAVE TO WASH OFF MY WALLS.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-10-2008 05:05:

Hey man, I told you to put some newspaper down. Not my fault you have a listening problem.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jan-10-2008 05:06:

Putting newspaper down on the floor has absolutely no bearing upon what you throw at my walls.

Jesus fucking downs children, do you have absolutely no reasoning capacity whatsoever?

OUT.

Posted by jupiterone on Jan-10-2008 05:15:

Hell I don't even really know what freedom to me is. I don't think it really matters because no ones idea of true freedom will ever become a reality.

it also applies to such categories as love, truth, et.c. et.c.
is anyone able to get u an answer? - no, at least that creature won't be human anymore.
but those questions, staying opened for thousands of years gave the world many and many of talented scientists, artists, politicians, phylosophs.
so maybe trying to find out an answer is worth it.

Right now, freedom to me is waking up whenever I want to. Pretty much.
