Ok, i don't know what do you mean as "tech-house", but THIS is/was the original tech-house sound as it was hailed by Mr. C and co. I already explained in numerous posts how the on-line shops with the mislabels could have changed the original meaning. Go read them for more information and for the history of the current sound.

ORIGINAL TECH HOUSE (FDA approved for originality)

Terry Lee Brown Junior - "Straight Flush"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF199604-01-01-13.mp3

Jay Tripwire - "Q On The Turn"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF177759-01-01-08.mp3

Gideon Jackson- "Come On" (great tune i used to have it on vinyl. Great Detroit influence)

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF120489-01-01-02.mp3

Eddie Richards - "Chicken or Beef"

And to clear things up (and for the threadstarter) this is how original deep house sounds like:

ORIGINAL DEEP HOUSE:

The Sun Orchestra - "Together"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF66395-01-02-01.mp3

Inland Knights- "Don't Ever"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF66395-01-02-02.mp3

Moodymann- "I'm Doing Fine"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF144186-02-01-05.mp3

Miguel Migs- "Petalpushing"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF66395-01-03-01.mp3

As you can listen tech house IS a dirtier, more futiristic, stripped-down version of deep house, whereas deep house is the cooler, fuller, organic sound. Still, they can be viewed as a continuum rather then as different genres. Hence one can refer to them as deep/tech house.

Chocolate ice cream is a darker, more chocolatey tasting version of vanilla ice cream. But we don't call it chocolate/vanilla iced cream. You douche.

And this is the original tech house.

My definition

Deep House = emotional soulful lower bpm house (most of the time < 122)

Tech-House = for some reason most of the time I associate tech-house to boring and unimaginative looped stuff < 130bpm, that's neither house or techno and often have predictable melodies and progression. Ok that's a super poor definition.

AMEN!"One Starry Night" is a very sweet record by the way!

It seems that people have massive problems understanding what is "deep house" and what is "tech house". I thought sites like "Beatport" was to blame so i went to their site and out of curiosity i chose the genre "Tech-House" to see what they have in there. I was expecting some huge mislabels like click'n' glitch minimal techno or electro-house labeled as tech-house, but surprisingly enough, from the samples they seemed to be accurate enough! They had Tim Weeks new "Fashionably Late e.p." (not familiar with the artist but e.p. sounded interesting...classic tech-house stuff), some other guy named Rene Breitbarth with another E.P. on Dessous (neither familiar with this guy as well, it seems that i have missed some stuff lol) the odd e.p. by Jeff Bennett (cudos to this guy, he never quits!)an e.p. by Petter Grummich (i thing i had a track by him) Ofcourse from the six new releases, two of them were probably more clicky, glitchy minimal techno stuff rather then "tech-house" in the traditional sense (or maybe "neo-tech-house" lol?). I was also surprised, that after a few years of having a "tech house" break, that the sub-genre hasn't changed that much (or actually, hasn't changed at all)! So, if for the most part everything is the same, why people still don't understand what the heck "Tech-House" is!?

Posted by nefardec on Apr-03-2008 04:27:

haha yeah there are still classic tech house sounds out there even on beatport

rene breitbarth - i own a ton of his stuff - a lot is really good, some is just fucking weird. 'bob ross' is hilarious but kind of disappointing.

maybe one of my favorites from rene is "sloth" a nice quirky triplet track that lives up perfectly to its name.

PETRAN def check out Breitbarth's older stuff, he has more chill dubby stuff that is really cool, mainly on Dessous.

I'm surprised this thread is still alive. But mad props to PETRAN for laying out some massive music knowledge in this area. I'm going to have a fun time checking out all these recommendations.

I kinda agree with you here. I haven't listened to much tech house (and don't know much about history of it), but fusion of techno and house happened long before tech house phenomenon. Detroit house (combination of Detroit techno futurism and Chicago house soulfulness) started to appear around 1987, mainly on Master Reese's label KMS. He (and his projects - Inner City, Reese & Santonio and E-Dancer) was also the most prominent pusher of that sound in the 80's (and 90's).

Anything you can find by Halo usually wins deep house. Love shit from him.

Also Steve Ferrand and, to a lesser extent, Sebastian Davidson.

I'm not contradicting that fusions of techno and house happened long before "Tech-House". I'm just saying that the term "Tech-House" was coined by Mr. C. Furthermore, IMO it ended describing a specific sound (despite the fact that Mr. C himself wanted to be more vague, and maybe it was but up to a certain extend)which was different from anything done before. It surely had Chicago house and Detroit techno elements, as i have stated before, that was what "Tech-House" was all about, but then again it sounds different then this proto-tech-house stuff like "Inner-City". In the end of the day "Inner-City" was the techno of the day, which was much slower than later-day techno and being in its infancy, it was still closer to house IMO.

Posted by sljiva on Apr-03-2008 21:11:

Yeah, I know that and agree with pretty much everything you said, but I somehow don't see why he (Mr. C) had to coin the term (and everything that goes with that) in the mid-90's, when the same thing (well not exactly the same, but what genre stays unchanged through the years) already existed
