mm the way i think is that, thank god they are quitting cause its time for us to take their places...

Ultimately, the people win here. If one of us feel that Paul Oakenfold has completely lost his touch and that he should make like a tree and leave, then by all means, boycott his sets at clubs and not purchase his mixes. At least at this point, he will learn to drop out of the game because he won't be making a decent profit and not filling clubs. Plus, if he still does not get the big picture, then his supporting labels or agents or whatever may get the idea and take some action. I am glad that someone chose to speak their mind, but whining, as this thread has regressed to, should not be tolerated.

Ahahahha. Oakie's last release was just a last grip at his fame to make a few bucks. He is DONE.

I've heard of things like this before, even seen Oakie play and it looked athough he was playing a mix cd.
He used to be awesome, Ive seen him play many times especially between 1997-1999 at cream, gatecrasher, godskitchen, renaissance etc
when he was Simply out fo this world.
Even when tiesto was starting to gain some real attention back in 1998-2000 you could tell he was influenced by oakie sets, playing very similar tracks to oakie even the structure of sets were similar.
It cannot be denied Oakie has helped dance culture in many ways, i.e. Ibiza! He even discovered many huge artists either in dance or other genre's, e.g. salt & pepper. Anyway the list could go on for what he has done, that said from around 2001/2002 he has slowly chnaged which is fine but also gone down hill.
Now he could of carried on gracfully, its a shame he's doing what he's doing now. When ever I hear of a comment from an oakie set from the last 5 years its never been good, even when I saw him a few years back it was rubbish. Its true, if he's bored then he should either do something about it or quit or do something.
Maybe he isnt bored, but if thats the case he really should sort it out, cos to not have a good comment on any sets he's played recently is a bad thing. It could be due to getting smashed on coke all the time who knows!
I think its a shame that he has many people losing respect, for someone that had so much. I still like oakie I dont think I couldnt but its gutting to hear that he's slowly ruining his name.

In an interview I conducted with Oakenfold he assured me his hearing is fine.
Makes me wonder about some things now.

I bet some people say "well tiesto does the same thing". No he doesnt you fucking hater, jump on the tiesto hate bandwagon some more. Every time I have seen tiesto he fucking owns the crowd and never plays the same sets over and over again. He has GREAT crowd interaction and you can tell he fucking loves what he is doing..

Originally posted by celestial thug just a shame he is so poor at it. Okie has done a great lot for the scene as a whole, there is no denying that. If the old man is making a living by being "paul oakenfold", i dont really mind. Some of the best dj's i have heard in my life didnt use any mixing skills at all, but it didnt matter, everybody knew they had them at some point at besides, right in this moment we were in, they sure had all of us by the ...hair. Randall mampi swift hype Andy C emok carl cox das saund etc... not technically great dj's (xept hyde and emok), but the best dj's i have ever heard. another thing is the fact that a dj like him, has to play the 15-20 most popular anthems...every night. thats what people expect. They are not paying loads of cash to see some Dj masturbate all over himself technically, or with strange 100 copy bootlegs.. they are paying to see oakenfold play what THEY belive to be the anthems of the day. I would get sod bored with it having it like a job like that aswell.

Originally posted by celestial thug i understand where youre comming from. my own feelings, read this, my own FEELINGS are the same. I take pride in what i do, but i know a lot of people who are deemed major "pros" and i know what they have to cope with. The fact is, thepunters go to see "Paul oakenfold". period, end of sentence. And if you ask them as they go out what they thought about the fact that it is a mixtape he played, most (non producers or bedroom dj's) would say...."the point being? i came to see paul oakenfold, and i saw paul oakenfold, have good one mate and come of it" There is no ripping off here if the punters generally speaking had a good night out, only in the idolisation of a single individual. But that itself is just as ridiculous as it is the human nature apparently. you re right, any joeschmoe could go on stage and do what paul does now...but joeschmoe is not paul oakenfold, and thats why he is paid so much money to stand there and try not to fall over from all the snorting and vodkashots.

right now what is more important of being a dj/producer, being handsome a people liking looking or improve your skills over the years.

Bit paul is neither, he is a superstar in his genre. And superstars is just another thing alltogether. They dont really need skill, in fact he could pull out his dick and "water" the first 3 rows of people and they would love him for it. thats a superstar! So for most even famous Dj's, the first applies. Skill, perceverence, some luck and a good network is what drives them, but superstars....man.... example, is britney spears one of the greatest vocal artists of this century and the last? so why all the attention? get my point? and i took no offense from your post. i have a language barriere which i think can make me come of as more crass than i am, dont worry |

Oakenfold was fucking brilliant in 99, you can bum tiesticles all you like, he was basically playing progtrance tracks oakie had already caned months before back then and adding some cheesy anthem shit.
So, I just spent the past 24 hours listening to the ENTIRE essential mix world tour series... FUCKING CLASS. That right there is ALMOST enough to keep face. Tho, I think its about time he called it quits, gotta be tough on a man of his years
This doesn't surprise me one bit. The last time I saw him in October of 2006, he left the decks on several occasions, walked around and was talking to people on stage. It was obvious he had a complete lack of interest in the crowd or what he was doing and was there merely for the paycheck. It was disgusting to see and his mushroom cap hair only added to the misery.
My experiences of Oakie have varied from the down right dreadful to the sublime.
I warmed up for him last year as I have already explained in the djbooth forum at the time.
Now I am aware that Oakie has stired up a lot of critisism in the past and I am sure that it may well be justified. I agree having someone pretend to play a DJ set is pretty cheap and I would feel cheated.
When I warmed up for the man he actually came on afterwards and totally blew the roof of the place. During the change over we even did a few back to back mixes and you can tell that the man has skills and an amazing ear for tunes. There was nothing fake or pre-recorded about that set and it goes down in history for me as one of the best I have heard ever.
He didn't have any problems with us residents being in the booth at any time and was easy to deal with and looked to be having the time of his life to be honest.
I am not some noob who is easily overwhelmed by a name as I have played with many of them and been doing this for a very long time.
In contrast you had PvD play a few weeks later and he basically started emptying the place and reportedly played the same set he played at the Turnmills earlier that month.
Now I'm not saying that Oakie didn't do those things that the thread starter said, on the contrary I have heard things like that about him too many times and where there is smoke there is fire.
But that night I got to warm up for him, he reminded me exactly what it was to be a DJ when the Dance music culture was at its peak in Europe.
Tiesto is the real deal in terms of being a DJ, he does the mixes albeit a little crap, he is into the crowd and gives a good show. Also has a fantastic ear for a good track.
The best DJ I have ever worked with though has to be Ferry. Great DJ skills, good ear for music and consistantly good productions. No attidude with the man either.
That said a lot of people still love Oakenfold, he is where he is today, plays for sell out audiences and makes insane amounts of money of royalties. He's laughing his ass off and we are bitching on an internet forum...
cheers
