Don't you mean,
Its ok; living in Tasmania means I don't feel bad about not tipping, as we don't have a minimum age and we're all related.

Round table is the best chain IMO.

As much of a pain in the ass as it is to tip, I'll take it over the employer paying a higher wage to the employee and the service being likely more expensive as a result. Tips give employees an incentive to work well. For example, waiters try to present themselves nicely by smiling and acting friendly, etc. It results in a more pleasurable experience. In Lithuania, where tipping at restaurants does not seem to be a common practice, I typically get the menu thrown on the table and hardly a word or a smile from the waitress. What does it matter to her? She'll get paid the same anyways.

Some services, however, are too easy and don't require much effort and as such should not be expecting tips. Valet parking is one. What am I tipping the guy for, especially when arriving? To not crash my car on the way to the parking spot? How hard is it to park a car? Unless I want him to park it in some special spot I don't see why a tip should be expected. Maybe when departing, a tip could be deserved if my car is pulled up very quickly. But even then, there is no real reason why it should take more or less time to do. You go to the car and drive it over. Pretty simple.
As far as pizza delivery goes, I suppose tipping could give the driver incentive to get to my house faster, but other than that I don't see the point of it.

Oh and don't get me started on automatically included gratuity at some restaurants...

Businesses, like you described in your post, would fail terribly in Australia. We pay our delivery/bar/wait staff a decent enough minimum wage, and people here rarely tip. That said, I have rarely been to a restaurant and had 'the menu thrown on the table and hardly a word or a smile.'

As a member of the staff, you're expected to conduct yourself as such. If you don't? You get your arse kicked, and/or fired. PLENTY of other people to replace someone with a surly/shitty attitude, and since the restaurant game is SO competitive here, the managers won't stand for that kind of bullshit - It fucks their reputation.

I don't care what your job is, or what you get paid - You either do it professionally, or fuck off and find a different job. Good luck getting a reference.

Posted by Fledz on Apr-01-2008 07:41:

^^^Agreed, but I still almost always tip. I appreciate the service and loose change is loose change. The jobs are shit and not that bloody highly paid.

Also, it's my culture to tip well anyway and combine that with working in hospitality means I tip quite damn well. Having said that though, you will never ever get a tip from me if the service is bad. That's just stupid.

So are you saying that most delivery/bar/wait staff in Australia are paid the minimum wage? What is it in Australia? Just wondering, not arguing. I would love to have good service with no need to tip but I guess in some places it just wouldn't happen.

I kind of agree, but I think that gratuitous tipping is stupid.

I go to a restaurant expecting good service. Surely, anyone does?

If the service is good, then I'm happy. I'll tell my friends that I was happy. I'll go back there to eat again, because I was happy.

But, I'll only tip if it was well above what I expected.

I'm not totally sure what the minimum wage is. Dependant on age, about 15'ish an hour? Someone correct me?

Just got a part time job delivering for Pizza Hut. Times are rough, I need the upfront extra cash.

Anyways...so far I've delivered to about 5 "colored" people...none of them tipped.

I'M JUST SAYING.

btw, I'm never ordering pizza again after seeing the shit ingredients/dishes go through.

In hospitality it's $17 minimum.

I'm on $19.50 though since I'm grade 3 and since I do weekends mostly, it's $22 on Sat and $27.30 on Sun Fuck, no way in hell a student could rake in more money than that in a casual job!

Oh shit, I just made it less necessary to tip now didn't I?

I see your point Sushi and agree with it, but I still tip more often than not. It's just the way I am and actually guarantees me even better service the next time I come back, proven time and time again

Posted by eROs.au on Apr-01-2008 09:13:

WAIT!!!!!

i do tip, when im at a bar and i have poo change. thats about it really.

Posted by Fledz on Apr-01-2008 09:16:

A couple of times I've made abput $150-$200 worth of cocktails and shots in one order, and the bastards even took the 5c pieces back as change. I mean ffs, people like that should be shot. On the spot, double barrel shotgun, BAM! Unnatural but necessary fucktard selection (ie elimination).

Hehe, yeah, I'll quite often tip at the bar, unless the guy/girl is a retard. I've tended bar before, I know how it works with quicker service 'next round'
