Ultimately it's just supply and demand.
Eventually the prices will go up again. I've seen too many DJs that spin at underground raves that are never going to make it. A lot of it is because the style of music they play isn't mainstream. That's also why they don't get paid much.
supply / demand dictates this
i'm not a producer, don't have much demand, and i get paid accordingly, about $60/hour @ the local bar.

you can probably make more money selling out and being a hip-hop dj at the local meat market, but that's all you'll ever be. or, you could be a jukebox wedding dj and bank, those guys get paid well, but then again, it depends on what is important to you.
Well mobile DJs make 1000 a night, if they have their own gear.
You could do that when you're not DJing at a club.
As to 60 an hour, it's not that bad if you are the only resident and get paid 300 for the night.
If you can get that kind of work 2 nights per week, that's 2400 cash. That's not so bad is it.
