They make the road SAFER to drive on and then lower the speed limit. Pure corruption as far as im concerned.

totally agree

How about 40kmh! Montreal has just lowered its "residential" streets speed limit to 40!!!!!!! Which is about 99% of streets.... that will be a major cash cow!

Valentine radar works wonder, but its pretty expensive. The cost could ranges from 300-500bucks. i suggest finding one at ebay.

kinda off topic,

people mentioned this earlier but cops definitely have a unwriiten rule about meeting a specific quota in regards to tickets.

I go to school at WLU and there is literally NO parking available by the school so most people have to park on streets around the school. Being "the most intelligent community in the world" (waterloo, actually won this award..) they decided to make a bylaw that no car can be parked on the side of any waterloo street for more than 3 hours... which is ridiculous considering that ~50,000 students attend the two waterloo universities and alot of those people commute to school. the city knows very well that there is not enough parking around these schools and decides to nab students for parking there. people like myself who commute to the school usually bunch their schedule to get all the classes over with so they dont have to drive back and forth... and three hours is a ridiculously short time to expect people to park.

What happens is at around 10:00 am parking "people" go around and chalk the tires of all the people that are parked around the streets around the school. three hours later they come back and if the tire is in the same spot, identified by the chalk, than the person gets a ticket.

There is NO LOGIC behind these retarded bylaws waterloo has made. I actually have a permit to park at WLU but all of the lots are ALWAYS, ALWAYS full. The first class starts at 8:30 and at about 8:35 there is NO PARKING AT ALL>!>!>!.

Ive actually spoken to a person that works for the city and they said that the vast majority of the tickets they issue are around the two universities.

cities are specifically creating situations in which to make even more money off of the students

just venting some anger....

Posted by malek on Apr-17-2008 19:22:

you are absolutely right.

There's many situations here too that are identical, the cities uses those "bylaws" to make their budgets balance, instead of being a punishment.

And cops and the parking "people" do have quotas... always look out for the radar operations at the end of the month, they have to fill their quotas

If you buy the right one they work great. Bell STI Driver is the best for Ontario because it is the only detector I am aware of that is invisible to Spectre 2 Radar Detector Detectors. Basically it doesn't leak radiation like other models. Since Toronto cops only use Ka radar you know right away if its a false alarm (K or X). On the highway OPP use Ka and Laser. While it still picks up laser, you gotta hope you are not the only car on the road as you need it to bounce off someone else to pick it up before you are caught.

Overall, great investment - find cops EVERY day on the Gardiner and Lakeshore WAY before they are close enough to get me.

Stop speeding.. Problem solved.
You speed you get in trouble.. I knew i had a problem with speeding ..just didnt realize what it would cost me at the end...

If you wanna speed ,see if you can handle the consequence of this .
And can afford it.

Not so easy when the cities and province artificially lower the speed limit. I firmly believe that the mandate of most city councils is to make it impossible for people to comply with rules and regulations in order to cash in on the fines and "victim surcharges".

even if the speed limit is artificially lower there are still signs that tell you what the speed limit is....if you can't pay attention to the road and see that the speed limit changes then you shouldn't be drving. The only thing that prevents people from doing the speed limit is themselves....no one else is in control of your foot.

This is the main point of difference of people who see driving as a means to get from point A to point B and those who see it as an experience to be enjoyed... I obviously fall into the latter catagory and cannot understand how people can just "point" a car and go as opposed to getting there in the most efficient, most enjoyable method. This doesn't mean bad behaviour but if you are on an open 4 lane highway why would you drive the limit if both your car AND the road is built for much higher speeds...

Bottom line is that if you are in the first camp, you will NEVER understand my point of view and vice versa - I think we must be born this way! haha

don't get me wrong....I enjoy the open road on a nice sunny day with the roof down and going 130 on the highway......but people shouldn't bitch because they get a speeding ticket.....you know you are speeding and you assume the risk of getting a ticket if you do. If you are concerned about getting a ticket and are going to bitch about it then don't speed.

+1 - The shit thing is that in Canada speeding is a long-term fine instead of a one-time tax like here in Europe

Back when I first was driving, my dad had a detector installed in the dash of his car (a 1988 Mazda 323 GTX Turbo for those who know).

you could turn it on and off with the dash lights and I know first-hand that if a cop pulls you over and accuses you of having a detector, he'll never find it because you turned it off with the dash lights. This was back in 95 butr the same theory would hold true today. He wouldn't have probable cause to rip your dash apart now.

most people get caught with a detector because when they get pulled over, the suction cup holder thing is still stuck to their windshield and the power cord is still in plain view and plugged in to the cigarette lighter.

Yup - that is true but hopefully you've avoided being pulled over in the first place...

Also, just put the damn thing in your pockets or G/F's purse - its a lot harder for them to justify a search of your person than your car...

So you are telling me that if they made a law telling you to punch your family or get fined youd do it?

no...I'm telling you that it would be my decision to punch my family or not and if I decided not to then I should accept my fine and not try to find a way around it.

although I may not agree with many of your arguments I do enjoy and respect your position but I have to say this was not one of your better counter points

And you would be ok with paying that fine? What you are basically telling me is that you are willing to roll over and play dead instead of doing something about an injustice no matter what it is.

Icve already written to the region and the town about these ridiculous speed limits. And at election time im going to ask everyone asking for my vote how they feel about it. If more people did the same then it would be dealt with democratically.

In the mean time i do 10 over knowing that at 10 over they rarely pull u over and push the system to the limit.

Just because something is a law doesnt make it right.

Didnt read the thread.....

they are illegal(in ontario) however you can still use em...

Bell STi is the best one to get. its invisible to spectre(the cops radar detector detector), though if you get caught with laser you are screwed. however out on the highways OPP typically use regular radar so youd be fine for the most part. in the city youd have to watch out (for laser). youd need a laser jammer etc, but thats a different topic.

this new 50 over limit is a huge cash cow. cash cow of EPIC proportions!

"street racers" my damn ass. the avg age of people caught is 30+ in regular old cars....why? cause the reasoning for the new law was complete bs smoke show. the general public is the majority of the problem(well duh, they represent the biggest numbers out there).

did you hear about the garbage truck getting caught for 112 in a 60(its actually an 80 road that drops to 60 in one small section and he got knabbed) . 58 years old. lol "tunerzzzzzz" my ass.
