Sidechaining isnt all about heavily pumping stuff.
Its been used for years on all sorts of musical styles. For a start you can use sidechains to de-ess vocals (google it) or to gate stuff effectively, and a whole load of other interesting stuff that can be devastatingly effective.

When all is said and done, it's just another tool at your disposal, and there is no 'right' way to use it.
As long as you use it in a way you see fit, and preferably creatively, then go nuts.

WTF sort of kicks are you using?? Half a bar? In a trance/house/4/4 track?
Half a bar is longer than a FULL 808 kick, which EATS the space in the bottom end of a track like nothing else.

I still can't believe that the donk they found on their DX7 and used on that track basically created an entire genre of music.

Speaking of not using sidechaining, I remembered back to this older track I did, long before I even knew what sidechaining was and I think it turned out pretty good. This has a lot to do with the fact that its psytrance so the kick is snappy and short so it doesn't collide with the bassline by default. With trance though and the typical long subby kicks, sidechaining would be critical IMO.

Not sure if a poor example helps

Modeate/Heavyish sidechained bass against kick

Kinda gives it that "oompa" feeling but you can turn down the gain to adjust results

yeah there is....you can hear it. Just not the low threshold high ratio super pump prydz style of nowadays...
Unless its just some wierd heavy mastering compression going on in that..

Sidechaining IS usable in a very subtle way as any of you who have spent time in a real studio or worked with any other type of music away from 4/4 kick should know...
And there is no bloody rule that says is can only be used on bass to make space for drums...!!!

(not having a go at you btw...)

yeah i know that i was just claiming that that track didnt use the sidechain TA think is sidechain; volume automation.
