so can anyone be bothered giving me a quick update on whats so much better than the previous titles?

Online is a fucking blast. Just roaming around in free mode spurs on new games between buddies. We played chicken with the crotch rockets. Then we played tokyo extreme racer on the freeway where we would race head to head to see who could stay ahead for a longer time.

On problem I can already for see being posted on the forums is the difficulty to control vehicles. It feels like there just isn't enough friction between the tires and the road to where you can't take very quick, or even quickly at all. It feels too floaty.

There are just a lot of moments where everyone will be playing and something really funny happen. We were playing a cops and crooks game, while my team were the crooks. Unfortunately for the other team, they only had two men to our six. So I started to run on this freeway and it was uncompleted so I feel off the edge and plummeted to my death. My team, my ENTIRE team followed me and nobody bothered to pay attention as to how I died. So we lemminged that round.

I had higher expectations, but it's still a great game. I haven't been doing many missions though, I'm still on the control missions.

You waited for 5 fucking hours just to get a game?!

Graphics, story, voice acting, the level of detail in the city itself, new combat mechanics (for both guns and melee - the new melee combat is really nice) . . . just to name a few.

In reality it isn't about how much is added, but how clear it is that R* really tried to refocus the game into something every organized crime movie has ever tried to be, in interactive form. Until now I'd say that the level of detail and production values of GTA kept it from really being reasonable to compare the GTA games to classic mob epics in film.

With GTA4 that distinction seems to be gone.

I guess the best analogy I can make for you is to liken it to Bioshock - which didn't have revolutionary or innovative gameplay, but managed to bring the details together so well that it put the game into a league of its own.

GTA4 is the first in the series that I think has reached that level of immersion.

It's not. It's San Andreas with better graphics and a few new features, just like San Andreas was Vice City with better graphics and a few new features. Shit controls, shit story, shit missions, shit side quests. Who in the fuck is going to roam around a lifeless, fake looking city to collect 100 CD's or whatever it was. BEST SIDE QUEST EVERRR.

And I doubt the graphics/engine in 4 have improved enough to make you WANT to explore the city. Here's what it would need to make me want to take advantage of the 'sandboxness' (the games only true advantage over a standard action game). I'd need the ability to enter any building at any time. I'd need to be able to pick up anything and break anything. No NPC would repeat the same phrase twice. Oh yeah you can blow anything up and kill anyone. That's great...for about five minutes. So as a sandbox game it fails. All that's left is the linear and boring storyline.

Even if the storyline was good, I don't buy games for the storyline. Seriously. I buy games for the gameplay. How fun it is to PLAY. I don't want to play a movie...what the fuck...I WATCH movies. Have you ever heard of a game called Indigo Prophecy? What a fun game. Just like playing a movie. You even get to walk through doors and choose what to say to people after you pick the exact order in which to get dressed, shower, shave and so on. It's a blast. GTA should be more like that. Less shooting, more asking some mobster about a drug deal by pushing the up arrow.

And the controls just annoy me. No matter what people say, the controls in 3rd person action games just fucking suck. Tomb Raider controls suck. GTA controls suck. Silent Hill controls suck. Metal Gear Solid's controls suck. The shit's just awkward for some reason. How are you supposed to aim?

It couldn't be more clear that you haven't even seen the game, much less played it.

Nice try though, Radagast.

awesome game overall, only thing i dont like is how long it can take to drive from mission to mission. i like the GPS feature though and it's a decent soundtrack for the longer drives

Any time I don't want to make a long drive I usually just take a cab - it's instant and doesn't cost much.

GPS is epic win though, really a great feature.

I wonder when the PC port will be out? I'm not buying a console just for this game even though I really want it now.

I think it's generally taken anywhere from 6 months to a year for the other titles in the series to be ported.

Will probably be pretty polished by then, though, so likely worth the wait.

You probably didn't like Max Payne either.

Posted by RJT on Apr-30-2008 17:51:

One thing I've come to question a bit is the whole aspect of the game that wants you to develop personal relationships with certain people by either dating them or going out with friends for a night.

The two characters in particular that they want you to do this with early on in the game are very, very difficult to care about - which has made me not want to even bother with them.

I obviously haven't played through all that much of it yet, but my initial impression is that this whole aspect of the game either didn't come off as well as they wanted it to, or that it's just wholly unnecessary.

i don't feel like waiting 6 months for a PC version

ef you san andreas!

Yeah, fucking bastards but I guess for them it makes sense for them financially though since PC games are so easily pirated. If you have an xbox/ps3 and a PC you will probably go out and buy the game now for the console instead of waiting 6-8 months for it on the PC. If the PC version was out at the exact same time a lot of people would just download it and never actually buy a copy.

I could have told you that months ago.

And how are you going to explain it to people? I'm sitting here playing GTA4!! WOW REALLY? WUT U DOIN A COOL MISSION? No i'm going out with friends.

I thought the whole point of video games was to get out of not having to go out with your friends, if you have any.

I bet theres more to it than that..as in more useless content that effects the game. R* usually has this problem. I would have fun just interacting with the environment beating people down for laughs.

Yeah - a few of the reviews I've actually bothered reading in their entirety have just mentioned that some of the relationships you need to develop early in the game have a pretty massive impact towards the end, but also that the relationships most important to develop are with people and characters who it's hard to like.

Seriously. I can imagine nothing that would be more humiliating than sitting alone in my house playing a game, and going out with friends in that game. Nothing would make me feel more like a loser. They should call it the loser minigame. Yeah. Clever innit.

Would it make you feel better if we let you know that just being who you are puts you into a league of your own insofar as you actually are a loser, so you shouldn't worry about just feeling like one?

Meh, I've had many times I wished I never went out with some friends, and having to deal with their shitty drama situations.

for you I would think looking in the mirror every day would be more humiliating than that

its a game dude, it is just entertainment. no different than sitting around the house watching tv or a movie

I still am not really liking the driving controls, they seemed a ton more solid in San Andreas. Also, the aiming is a bit more shit in this, especially the auto-aim. Other than that, this game is win on all accounts.
