While we're on topic, do you guys know how to change your Facebook profile so that only the first letter of your last name appears when people look at it or do a search for you? I've entered my real full name there when I signed up, but now I'd like to change it to only show the first initial (I have a very rare surname, and unfortunately when I send out e-mail to customers from work, it shows my full name - I send out hundreds of e-mails daily, most of which are just automated database responses, but nevertheless they all show my full name and I don't want anyone unauthorized to be able to look me up, even with the restricted privacy settings that I have). I've tried t change it recently by going to Account -> Name change, but FB didn't allow me to and claimed that "Your full name must be attached to your profile".

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated

Kamka, I think they became really strict with name changing now

I changed mine a while ago, so I only have L as my last name initial
however when I went back to add "Funky" as my middle name, that didn't work

I'm glad they did. It's your name - it doesn't change on a monthly basis.

For a/, no employer is going to try to circumvent facebook security measures for every single potential applicant. I doubt anyone's going to even bother searching for you on Facebook. Generally, HR have more important things to do. Even calling the references you provide is starting to become rare.

c/ as well. It's so much effort to search your name, find what forums you belong to (for example, the facebook links in this thread hide your name from the google bot), and then wade through your posting history for hours on end trying to find out what you did last weekend. No one's going to bother.

OK, you tell yourself that if it makes you feel better. I'm not talking about if you are just an applicant - I mean if you're in final rounds for a decent job. For professional positions, it's a possibility, trust me.

You say that as if you provided some evidence for why you are more correct than I am. I provided logic to back my arguments, you just said to trust you. Why should I?

Except for the most extreme cases (and I think it's safe to say that the people to whom those extreme cases apply are probably a little more careful than the average TOTA poster), I think what you said is baselessly paranoid. In fact, I can tell you that your point c) is complete bullshit because given just the real name of the applicant, searching for their online identity is pointless because you don't know what you're searching for - i.e. if you've been searching for an hour and didn't find any links as to what I post under online, is that because that information doesn't exist, or because you didn't search well enough? Same goes for trying to find some dirt on someone via Facebook.

Anyway, not being paranoid does make me feel better, if that's what you meant.

Sorry Kamka, I can't help you with the FB name change since they're checking the name change requests now. You could either use an abbreviated last name or supply a fake one?

As for the automated messages... why are they tied to your work email address? I'm assuming your company is using exchange server, so why not have your IT guys create new email addresses which are actually associated with your exchange account? That way, the emails going out will be coming from whatever name is assigned but if the customers reply, you'll get their emails and can choose to respond from your account. In general, I find it a very bad idea to tie an employee's email account to mailers or automated messages of any kind. You got to think about the volume of emails going out and bounce backs and such. Always a good idea to have separate accounts for those purposes.

I heard a speaker a few months ago that showed us how he was able to dig up dirt on his former assistant - thru facebook, thru message boards and the like. (Her profile was private) For example, he could find her FB profile linked on this board, and consequently search through her posts or look for the same msg board ID on other similar boards.

You're right, people who are in better jobs or have a professional designation (I suppose that's an "extreme case" on this board...) absolutely are more careful than your avg poster - what I'm saying is that when you're young, you might not recognize that eventually you might be in such a job where your internet activity might come back and bite you one day.

It's a little creepy to go through all that trouble just to get dirt on someone, don't you think..? *shudders*

All I can say is "wow". Extreme case indeed.

Have you met humans these days? People are that desperate when it comes to gossip and dirt.
