Nice booking for John O Callaghan

If you wanna educate people, I got a few DJ names that you could use

Nice work with Tranceformers

sick sick sick sick sick booking for john o'callaghan, hes been my favorite trance dj/producer for the past few years. Ill be there with bells on.

Another suggestion is to possibly get some new openers and closers every now and again. Im not taking anything away from the ones that spin now, but its usually the same names all the time.

Great job circus at bringing some trance. I also have a bunch of other dj names like neo hacker if you guys ever need any suggestions.

+1 Circus that is all I have to say...

very very smart idea.

LOL!!! This thread's hilarious...Circus trying to educate people...HA!

Good luck with the trance bookings Stereo was doing the same thing with their monthly trance night...so what Circus is doing is nothing new at all. Simply keeping up with the Jones', following the trend(s) other afterhours have already set months ago.

These bookings are defo a trance heads' dream...Too bad there really isn't much for the house heads at Circus in terms of bigger, fresher bookings. Grondin, Fabi & Lippe...those same names all the time...it gets redundant and boring.

But like I said, defo providing SOMEthing for the trance heads.

Circus is booking artists that haven't even been booked in MTL before... Aly&Fila, John O'Callaghan...
It is a different touch I must say. I actually wonder how this will turn out.

Ya, totally +1 for booking names MTL hasn't seen before. Anyone that does that in my city deserves a little respect at least.

I'd like to see it done for their main House room too though. The names I've seen in the Gallery are puuuuuuure producers trying to be DJs (with the exception of one or two)...Anyways, it's just m opinion.

No matter what formula Circus puts in for their bookings though, I still think that place is dangerous, sketchy as fuck and downright scary. Too bad they have the MTL monopoly of afterhours now...but only by default due to the fire at Stereo.

My summer 2008 includes 0 afterhours now, unfortunately. Cherry and PikNik are where I'm at this summer.

Anyways I don't wanna hijack so, sorry in advance; for sure someone's gonna shit on me for saying what I said (what else is new)?

TRANCE saves the day!!

I went to Circus 2 times last weekend and there were quite a lot of people from Stereo I must say, people I knew... The vibe is by far different and of course it is a more sketchy... But I would say it is a definite alternative for clubs like Redlite...

For the time being it is the only thing we have got, so I don't mind.

These trance nights should be a lot of fun... not always musically speaking ofcourse

EDIT: Of course somebody has to argue with you Erika, otherwise it just wouldn't be fun on the MTLforum anymore

Posted by Circus.Montreal on Jul-27-2008 18:30:

Thanks for the major hijack hehehe

I won't argue with you on bringing always the same djs

But booking the top 100 dj mag poll isnt something that much smarter

The huge difference with Circus is that the crowd is more of an afterbar/club crowd

The majority of people going to Aria + Sona + Stereo used to be real hardcore partiers going out to hear their favourite dj...

People were in the line at 1h30 and leaving at 8,9,10 or whatever

We get a lot of club staffs... bartenders... club clients that are curious and dont want to go home so fast

It's a totally different ball game

For names that we brought ... well do i need to put up a list really ? hehe

Tom Pooks / Cube Guys / Funkagenda / Micky Slim / Kyau & Albert / Thomas Gold / Aly & Fila / John Ocallaghan / And more and more that all have never been to Montreal

Brining big djs like Gervais / Howells / Behrouz / Honey Dijon / Sean Tyas / Tenaglia / Lawler / Dubfire / Ferry / Cox / Vibe / etc etc etc is fun... but not every weekend for us because of 3 things

First these guys charge 3, 4, 5, 10 15 sometime 20 or 30 000 dollars for a night

+ you gotta pay for couple hotel rooms... set up immigration + working papers

pay sombody to do all that instead of bringing people to your club... put up a big campain for promo and stuff

Put banners on the web + print flyers + print posters + print tickets

Pay for your resident djs to open and close

Distribute in stores, hire extra promoters + this + that ++++++++

So at the end it cost you instead fo 3, 4, 5 or 10.... it is now 8, 9, 10 or 15 000 dollars you invested in a single dj

Now you have to obviously put the price at the door much higher.... you need to charge 40 or 50 dollars at the door

Regular customers who come in only to chill for an hour or two after the bars dont wanna come in because its pointless to pay that just to relax.... or even go in the hip hop room

So youre missing 200 or 300 of the regular mass crowd from the start which is almost 30$ a head that they would spend... so almost 8 or 9k in the red right there

If the weather is shit... people dont come

If the weather is too nice outside... people dont come in because they wanna have a nice day on sunday morning and enjoy

If theres a bigger dj in another afterhour... people dont come

If the street is closed for some reason... some kids fight outside of a bar... police is in front of the club... people are scared to come in

Some guest djs could be sick... they dont show up... miss their planes... people wanna get refund...

For all those reasons... i'm not saying we DONT want to book djs... but there are other reasons and i wont mention them... that make dj bookings a BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG nightmare

I'm not saying we dont wanna do bookings

Cuz we do

But not always at that price

Not every weekend.... twice a week

And that is why we bring smaller acts.... but good ones and djs that we believe can bring something different to the plate

That never played in Montreal

But we want to focus on our people... our djs... its out goal

Because we believe in our resident djs and what they bring to the club

We have solid nights and are the club in town that hires and give their chance to the biggest amount of local djs ever in Montreal

Vivie-Ann / Kal / Tone Depth / Franco Fabi / David Laguer / King Louis / Domenic Pandolfo / Driss / Big Al / Stefane Lipp / Pat Boogie / Mr E / Just Jonathan / Nick Pilon / Carl Muren / Axel Klein / Project Underdog / Etienne Ozborne / Patrick Dream / Mini / Max Julien / Eddie Jasmin ( I think im missing one or two ) ..... these are all djs that play once a month or once every two months.... and they deliver every night

I hope after reading this you understand a little more our vision of the market....

The younger crowd isnt as much into afterhours than us when we first started

Montreal is a very different city... but we go with the flow and try to make the afterhour experience the best we can

Make it enjoyable and worth the 20$ you invest in here

But most likely... we do it because we love the music and because all our staff enjoy serving you guys.... "hahaha so cheesy"

Now lets dance and enjoy this very nice sunday afternoon

Alright, respectable post. But again, dropping numbers and how much DJs cost won't get you anywhere. I happen to have a very good idea as to how much everything costs to bring someone like Digweed or Howells. And I think YOU know how much Lawler costs so let's not go there

I don't know how many times I have to tell you this but I'm just a fan of the scene; numbers mean balls to me cuz I'm not a manager or owner or whatever. I want a solid prog/tech(no) night in this city, point final. One a month, 4 times a year, whatever. SOMEthing.

If you guys over at Circus are making soooooo much damn money as you claim you are, then why in the world can't you bring a huge DJ (like Digweed, Howells, Desyn or for the trance heads, Armin, etc?) every now and then? Like, 3x a year? I never ever said do it every weekend so I dunno where you got that.

I'm sure you remember Aria, you worked there...JF had that formula of doing huge bookings every night the damn club was open. And what happened? It closed!!! You worked for him...I know you know that the formula was bad...It's not hard to guess or see that.

So ya, have an insane international booking every 3 months or something along those lines. That's all I was trying to say before you started talking numbers again.

Your door price at Circus is always advertised as 20$, you get there and it's close to 40$! It increases as the night goes on. Guestlist? What guestlist? Last time I checked, glist meant FREE. Why is Circus' glist not 100% free? They ask you to give like 4$ or something. Not saying it's alot to ask, but I wonder...

Anyways, you guys ARE clearly making money with your ridiculous door prices and line-up of DJs that aren't so expensive, I'm not disputing that. I'm saying do something respectable and good with all that cash. Oh wait, too many "other" expenses to take care of first, that have higher priority over bringing solid DJs that will pull in a huge crowd to your club? That's too bad really...

Bottom line: I really don't think Circus puts out much for the house crowd of MTL in terms of musical credibility (Nobody's gonna say in 2 years, "Shit, remember that insaneeeee night at Circus when they booked X DJ?") I'd like to see more good things instead of hearing horror stories like bouncers assaulting people. Cheers!

Well im not giving out our numbers really... im just saying that bringing internationnal djs is interesting... but doesnt bring you that much and is a pain to organise

Lots of people in Montreal have control over some bookings and circus isnt interested in trying to get those bookings by offering extra money

"this guy pays that ?... ok we give you 2000 extra"

Not really

As i said... our residents are solid and the vibe is always fun

Thats our way to see the market

Everybody bringing big headliners are losing money

Are we gonna lose 10 000 dollars just for the sake of bringing a big headliner ? ... the answer is no

If we see an opportunity where it could be worth it to bring in a big guy... we will do it

Since last year with Ferry... nothing came up that could be profitable and fun to bring to the club in terms of top top A-class headliner

So we stick with are awsome residents and some interesting upcoming internationnals

Thats all

+1

I totally agree on those points. You guys should work on that if you really want to build a strong reputation. I went once to Circus since Stereo was burned down and to tell you the truth, I am not planning to go back if things stay the way they are.

it's just a different crowd and vibe...
u guys are just too used to stereo...
the same way all of u blast red lite, red lite is ALWAYS packed
with a bunch of people i know who love to hate on stereo lol!

don't tell me "stereo's this, stereo's that" i know..
you're just proving my point
loyal fans who don't like anything else
cause it's a whole different ball game..

same wit circus
they have their own residents..and i mean clients, not dj's
who love to hate on stereo !

tu peux pas t'attendre a une soiree similaire au stereo quand tu sors quelque part d'autre.. that's called being narrow minded. and that's blasphemy in montreal.
