I just don't get how its a money issue when that bar and room is always rammed. Every friday the "gay room" is easily more consistent with people at the bar/filling the room then say the washroom bar or cinema room. Of all rooms to change.. bleh.

I have been saying how much I loved the Ballroom on Fridays as it was a great vibe (in the same vane as industry where gays, str8's and everyone in between were comfortable) so when I started to hear about this I was pissed.

However, it was not packed every Friday as you say. I have been there on Saturdays when they had Randomland in the Sky Cinema lounge since there wasn't enough people. We had the chance to bring that back and we didn't support it enough.

As someone who has been in both scenes for many years I do think you can generalize that gays don't drink as much as straight people. You can not compare Buddies, Straight, Woody's, Fuzion to Circa, Guv, or Fly...they simply are not the same.

They gay community has had a serious problem supporting a big night of Fridays for the last number of years. They are happy with getting the same recycled circuit party bullshit at Fly every Saturday. That's why we've basically had the exact same DJ's at the same Pride parties for the last 4 years...its really sad that we don't demand more from the gay promoters like Gairy Brown and the Pride committee. When my friend was helping organize the Pride parties the last few years (not involved this year) he would ask about bringing new people in (Lawler, Calderone, etc,) and would always get shot down by DB.

We had the chance to bring something new to the scene and force clubs like Fly to change (if more people went and supported Circa on Fridays and spent this disposable income there instead of Fly on Saturday) but as usual we (the gay communitee) choose to keep the same recycled bullshit.

Supposedly the cinema room is now going to be the new house room .. which should be a hiphop room if anything. I don't get how you can't compare a gay club to a gay room which is basically the same crowd either way. When circa opened all of my friends stopped going to fly and went, and drank, at circa instead. The crowd at fly is SO much sketchier than the one in circas mirror ballroom.

Whatever.. no matter what the room is changing.

This reminds me of thread about The Gallery switching formats

Really??? I don't see the connection.

Posted by ExtremeWays on Jun-02-2008 02:46:

Actually, gay men drink more than straight men. They (we) also smoke more, do more drugs, and sleep around more. Just about every study in recent history proves this. It's not a good thing, but it's a fact.

And Activate, I don't disagree that a club can change its format in any way it wants to improve its business (though I disagree that it will work out that way.) But when they eliminate a gay-oriented room from the club right after the single biggest gay party weekend of the year, that's hypocrisy.

That being said, I'll probably be there anyway 'cuze that's where the party's at!

I mean the bickering

I find it very hard to believe that a club like Circa, who has invested a lot of money in the club, would stop a successful night for any other reason than unsuccessful bar sales.

Posted by rabbitjoker on Jun-03-2008 15:17:

The room was shut down because it didn't make business sense.

Circa is not a charity and can and should make business decisions in the best interest of the organization.

If a night is important to a community - then it is up to them to support it with their dollars.

EOD.

That said - the Mirror Ballroom was a great party venue and I will miss it. Tom Stephan was great as was Doman & Pettigrew.

Hopefully it won't be a hip hop room on special nights as the room was one of the most enjoyable to spend time in (couches, vibe, etc).

... have you umm, ever been to fly?
The place is pretty much empty before midnight/1am - and usually isnt 'packed' until after last-call. I'm sure thats just doing WONDERS for bar sales. really.

Buddies and Straight are not the same types of clubs that Fly is.

and Fly on friday nights, like their old retro nights, were 99% drinking crowds with brisk bar sales.

by 1am it was a complete shit show drunk fest on the dancefloor, lol.

Exactly and the gay communitee didn't support it enough. We haven't supported a big Friday night in over 5 years.

It was my favorite room in Toronto when it was on. Tom Stephan, Honey Dijon. It was great for Heather, but they closed it really early simply because there wasn't enough people there to support it.

From the Event listings it looks like they haven't stopped the Randomland theme, and it looks like they are still brining in DJ's (The Glimmers & Ivan Smagghe, Switch, Riton, M.A.N.D.Y and Mixhell) but it will be in the main room and the hip hop will be moved into the Ballroom. Just because they have let go of some of the gay promoters doesn't mean they aren't trying to appeal to the gay communitee anymore. Maybe they let them go and maybe the night wasn't supported enough because the promoters who were let go didn't do a good job. I don't know how many times I have been complaining about the lack of promotion for Circa.

Time will tell what these changes bring. While I won't be happy being around a hip hop crowd (maybe i'm old, but I just don't feel safe) I will still be going to Circa for Randomland on Friday's if they keep bringing in the DJ's.

Along with bad promotion I think Guv is the most powerful club in Toronto. It leaves little room for monopoly.

To be honest I hated the venue Footwork when I first entered it and I know a lot of other people who did as well. Small, hot, gross, wierd layout, I can go on and on.

But it's an easy club to fill especially when bringing in Eric Entrena, Speedy J and Chris Liebing.

Well, a few months ago I went to Circa for the first time, it was the AD/D reconnected party with DJ Dan, Hatiras and Bang Gang vs. Turbo, Jesse Rose...

I went because 1) Wanted to check out Circa, 2) always wanted to check out a AD/D party 3) Bang Gang DJs and Jesse Rose.

So I get there, head straight to the Ballroom after a quick tour and drink of CiRCA... didn't leave that room once! Got in there, sound was tits, lights were minimal but there, and we headed to the bar, grabbed our drinks proceeded to drink our faces off!

We all mnetioned and were shocked and enjoyed the fact that that room was going off like a mutha and everyone was shitfaced, drinking, dancing, partying and it was just a room of fun! It was a nice change of pace to see people drinking thier face off, everyone dancing, everyone getting along, hip hop kids, gay kids, trendy kids etc etc. Not just a bunch of gino's in a corner hovering over a empty grey goose bottle or a bunch go sketched out b-boys in the other corner... Bang Gang tore that room up!

But then, within seconds of Bang Gang finishing up, Jesse Rose came on... GHOST TOWN! Empty... fuck even the ligths guy took off! Bar shut down practically to only 1 bartender from the 6 they had pumping drinks earlier...

Still the best room, one of the best vibes i've ever experienced in Toronto and we all planned to very soon visit that room again... this news saddens me.

PS - And I only found out a week later from Barb, that is it was a homo room... I just thought it was a room full of people who knew how to have fun!

PSS - So where the AD/D parties moving now? Wrongbar?

I was at that party to see Jesse Rose since I was going to see him a few weeks later in Berlin. I actually talked to Jesse at Panorama bar after his set and made the same comment about how the room empited really early and how they shut it down early. He was not happy about it at all and said he hoped he could come back and play a different club.

I know, talked to him later that night after they shut'er down... he was not impressed. I just can't imagine how such a mass exodus of partiers just gone... He was a nice dude tho... I loved his set, I can imagine him being pissed that people were not there, but the selfish part of me loved the wide open dancefloor lol...

Back to the topic to... I <3 the ballroom, sound is tight, not to loud, not to quiet, the led lights are the perfect amount, the big VIP, the bar, the atmosphere... amazing!

I am the most open minded straight person there is, so don't say I am generalizing.

The fact CiRCA is changing their format is because of bar sales, not this anti gay stuff you clueless people are spouting. The bar sales in the mirror ballroom on Saturdays are fucking retardo. Guess what the music format is btw. Maybe they want some of that on Fridays.

If the gays were drinking like crazy, they wouldn't change the format. For the reasons I have previously mentioned, the gays don't drink as much.

Where there is a lot of other stuff than drinking going on, the barsales tend to be lower. You pointed out yourself with the Guvernment example.

While you have a fair point, you don't have to insult people. These 'clubbing newbies' will lead the way for the next clubbing generation.

Before you try and judge me, I'm NOT some clubbing newbie. I've been partying since 1995 at places such as The Cream, Ministry of Sound, Faliraki, Rhodes, L.A. and here. I've probably seen it all..

Many gay people prefer to ensure that their bodies look fit and they know that drinking is fattening, hence why SOME turn to the less calorific alternative...

Changing their format to an R n'B bar, whilst more profitable, will only lead to other potential issues. My experience tells me that House and Hip Hop crowds do not mix well at all. Does the change need to be that drastic to bring in alcohol sales, or are they merely competing with the Orange Room?

I wasnt a fan of Circa to begin with, following the coat check 'zoo' when Axwell played and I certainly won't be going back now if that is the proposed change. Way too much attitude in there already from drunk little kids. But as long as Circa gets the bar sales, there probably won't be any quality control on the patrons. Let them all get blind drunk and fight and continue the nonsense on Richmond Street, after the place closes right?
