for me, going out to a nightclub just needs to involve some quality music. i could really care less who plays it (headliners don't really bring me out more then any other). if the dj plays a great track, and doesnt trainwreck or distort the sound in some really aweful way.. im lovin it regardless of who's plying it. you want to hear menno, above & beyond, tyas.. im sure taj or blurr or some local will play some of their tracks at some point in the night. and thats what it should be about.. is music and the vibe. as far as 1015 is concerned.. it's the OWNER who doesn't know sh*t about edm, and is trying different solutions to boost revenue for the club. once he figures out one solution doesnt work and another might, things will once again change. from a business aspect, having local nights makes logical sense.. its cheaper, etc. but what really needs to happen is a boost of revenue (ie, people actually COMING to the local nights) for one to consider forking up money for headliners, dope fliers, etc. it's all about support. 1015 isn't going anywhere.. (there's still going to be the people that show up to just about any event to hear some quality tunes, dance, get their buzz on, and hang with friends) it's just one of those things that involves constant change. and as far as ruby skye is concerned.. yah.. i go there. but i would say at least half the people there don't even know why they're there.. they have no clue who the dj is playing.. it's just got a supreme location, and it's just a "dance club". they can have local djs there, and the club would probably still pack out with a bunch of douches spilling their drinks all over everyone else. i guess it's a choice of personal preference.

car pool with friends, get a bottle (its cheaper that way if you split it with friends), and it comes with free entry. not even close to $200!

i don't know what you would consider a "good night" but i would be happy sitting in a babypool with a solid boom box, good tunes, a bottle and good friends anyday.

(god i wish the owner could read this thread )

Headliners bring a different vibe. You can be the best DJ in town and the vibe is completely hit or miss week after week if it is just local DJs. When you go to a event with a headliner, you know what to expect. There is a certain feel that certain headliners bring along with them and that help to generate the vibe. Of course this isn't necessarily good, I haven't gone to see PvD in years because I know he brings along with him a line that wraps around the block...

I really don't want to hear Taj, Blurr, or any of the other local DJs spinning the same stuff that you would expect from headliners. If anything they are lucky in they can spin what they feel is best for a particular night. Not to mention I think I would boycott any local DJ if I heard them playing stuff that headliners produced but are expected to play; Anthem, Sirens of the Sea, and I'll toss in For an Angel.

Ok, I dont normally post very seriously when Im on here. But when I first saw this thread, I have to admit I was very upset at the thought of 1015 hitting the "end of the line" and had to voice my opinion. Because over the last couple of years, I feel like 1015 has truly become home for me (in a clubbing sense). I love the venue, the rooms, the musical diversity, and especially all the locals. Never have I been in a club and met soooo many awesome people.

Having said that, I honestly dont believe that the club is dying, or is at the end of the line, or is any other negative connotation. Does the club have some issues? Sure. Are there things that need to be improved upon? Absolutely. But to suggest that the club is doomed for failure or is head and shoulders beneath Ruby Skye is absolutely ridiculous IMO. The club is going through some changes, no question about that. But change isnt always a bad thing. Hopefully the place will evolve for the best once the owner gets a better grasp on things.

As earlier stated by R!CH, 1015 is a megaclub and it has a loyal group of patrons/supporters. Those patrons, along with all the TAs that frequent the club, wont allow the club to go down. We all just need to do our part and support all the DJs (headliners AND locals alike) as much as we can. As for getting more house and techno headliners to play at 1015, Ill second that notion. A little bit of musical color in the mainroom (with the exception of hip hop ) would be a breathe of fresh air, in addition to bringing in a more diverse crowd.

And now I apologize as Im rambling at this point. But I guess my point is that 1015 is awesome and going nowhere. Just as long as Taj is there to point the club in the right direction.

1015's a megaclub? lol, that's why I like the place, despite being big and having multiple rooms it doesn't have that whole "this is THE big club in town" feel to the crowd and events. I guess I've always defined megaclub more as an atmosphere that luckily 1015 is much too chill for, at least the nights I've been there.

When compared to all the other clubs in SF, I would say 1015 is a megaclub. No other club in the city can offer such a large venue with 4 rooms of bangin music, all consisting of different genres. But granted, its not on the same level of clubs in the likes of say Gatecrasher, Amnesia Ibiza, etc.

well i define a megaclub as being amongst the biggest and having the most rooms of music within its market (the norcal region), not by the type of atmosphere found inside, which can swing wildly from night to night depending on whose party it is. this is a place that can book 12 or more djs in one night and it's regularly open until sunrise. it even partitions off into separate parties on the same night like amnesia. not many other clubs around here that can do all that.

Translation.....

personally, I've liked 1015 for 5 or 6 years ago and it's one of the most improved clubs in San Francisco. It always has the best djs from around the World. Out of all the clubs, 1015 has the best/most improved dj booths. My friends in Mexico complain about fences around the dj booth. NO FENCES! 1015 doesn't have fences. I always feel fortunate and safe with the big strong female security guards at 1015 and the generally friendly attitude of everyone. I also look at the photos to remember how messed up I was at 1015.

Thank you Taj for dancing with me when I locked my wife up at home so she wouldn't find out about the young sexy girl I met at Lovefest. haha

1015 is the best club, my number 1 club.

calmante, calmante! Chill out brotha.

Just having fun.

I know it does not say Taj danced with you. And everyone else one here knows it doesn't say that.

I said basically what you said. The rest is just fun. We all feel the same way as you about 1015.

1015 has made improvements over the last 5-6 years since you have been going. You like how the dj booths are. Your friends complain about the dj booths in Mexico. The security at 1015 is always nice and makes you feel secure. And you want to thank Taj for bringing the best djs in the World to 1015. 1015 is your favorite club.

Don't start making threats brotha. I am not making fun of you. Just having fun.

Relax! I will buy you a beer next time at 1015 if you are not so violent and try to be peaceful my friend.

Kind of sums up what I hate about 1015 - too many dickheads with no sense of humor. As if there aren't enough Vietnamese gangsters hanging out, making mean mugs all night. And the security is "friendly"? Give me a fucking break. Maybe they need to be class A dicks to offset all the assholes that show up, but 1015 has just about the most UNfriendly security staff I've ever seen.

If I'm with a group of friend, then the positives outweigh the negatives. I like having several rooms with different music. I like the main room with the DJ booth right near the floor. But I won't pretend that there aren't a lot of negatives too.

I'm really disappointed to read this, please read what I have to say coming from just a person who loves dance music and its culture as oppose to someone who works at Ruby Skye. At some point in history me, you and other people walked into a venue not realizing who the DJ is. Sometimes many of us are in awe and become an instant fan, other times we were disappointed.

In my own world if any person EXERCISES THEIR FREE WILL to listen to electronic dance music of ANY KIND, then at the very least you're worth meeting and perhaps that will progress in getting to know that person. As long as you're not the type of person who harms children or intends violence on others, I don't really waste my thoughts or feelings judging people.

Your comment is extremely judgemental. It's no different than the stereotypes or negative opinions people say about : Ravers, Burners, Junglist, People who attend certain venues, etc etc

THEY'RE ALL PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC IN ANY FORM, TO ANY CAPACITY IN MANY ENVIRONMENTS

Some people swear we're some massive culture here in San Francisco, that everyone is completely isolated from one another. HELLO! we have a 6 figure population in a 7 mile radius.

I'm pretty confident I go out more than most Northern California people on this board and you know what? I see pretty much the same people at ALL parties and venues, so I'm completely dumbfounded as to why people WITHIN the EDM culture judge each other often.

I don't care how young/old you are, if you're old school to the point you've been listening to house/techno since the mid 80s GOOD FOR YOU, you're still no different to me than a person who falls in love with dance music today.

This culture doesn't belong to anyone and it should welcome everyone

I understand personal preferences and all, being happy and comfortable is important to me in relation to my friends and customers. However a lot of what I read doesn't promote growth at all.

In case you don't realize SF has over 120+ active venues (bars, nightclubs, lounges)

I would love to see more diverse EDM take over the greater percentage of that 120+ with consistent numbers that satisfy venue owners. The only way that's going to happen if the EDM dance community as a whole has a more open minded and welcoming vibe to those who spark an interest in dance music.

You must also realize that in the present, there are so many ways to discover dance music. So patience, being open minded and educating those you wish is key.

This isn't like before where we had a common medium of undergrounds to learn from, with EDM being ever more prominent people often hear it for the first time randomly.

Posted by element-y on Jul-23-2008 02:13:

anyways haha... if 1015 can think of a way to work on the outside with the city having a projected image or a picutre etc as designed a while ago for a broader gerneal public club appeal that would work. Also main room should always look good. It worked for infected. Find design that can stay up and make the dry black main room look not dead. Just simple tinkering with design and color or mirrors etc to get the palce more lively.

Posted by Alain on Jul-23-2008 02:22:

You can add all you want to a venue, it does nothing if you don't have a foundation or/and consistency.

I don't know what's going on over there, but whoever keeps changing things needs to give complete Saturday night control back to Taj if he doesn't have it now.

Dramatically changing and experimenting format during a summer season is not a good move.

I don't want to see San Francisco lose a main room to another kind of music.

don't be disappointed Alain...(wasn't being judgemental at all) I understand exactly what you're saying.. it's actually amazing when someone goes to a venue (with edm especially) not knowing what the hell they're getting into, and then realizes that they are an instant fan of the culture and music. (but there is truth to the fact about what i said: that around half the people there are just THAT... not knowing what they're about to listen to, and completely in the dark as to what DJ there is playing at the moment..) I would be HOPING that their experience would be amazing and would have them coming back for more. (it benefits us as music lovers/promotors/djs/clubs, etc). And you're right that we've all been there at some point, in the beginning stages of "what the heck is this music?!? i love it!" (even if it was in the 80's ) and that's why most of us stand here today trying to support and enjoy. (whatever venue it may be). My whole point in my post was to say that I could care less about the DJ playing it...(most would differ).. i just want to hear some solid music
(oh, and P.S. there is also truth to the fact that HELLA peeps spill drinks @ ruby...I, myself have probably been one of them at some point )

I understand more of what your saying after reading this following your last response, so I'm not disappointed now that I also understand who you are more. I guess in less words, I was saying out of any known music culture we're definitely one of the few who constantly have to keep working hard to keep our audience consistently growing, so there shouldn't be any reason to outcast those just because they don't immediately understand it the way we do.

judging from 1015's website, you wouldn't know that. it wasn't six months ago that every weekend on the calendar had an event posted for friday and saturday. now the calendar has one event posted for the next month and NOTHING the entire month of august until you get to sep 5th's get freaky party. instead your fancy flash site is being relegated to a bulletin board where some flyers are posted on the front page every once in a while. it appears as if the club is in steep decline from the looks of it. i have a friend who wants to buy presales for the collie buddz show this friday, but can't.

let's compare that to how thorough and well-managed ruby skye and mezzanine's websites are. these are still the venues you're trying to compete with right? events here are well-organized and posted several months in advance. the whole month to come is filled in with bookings along with links to buy tickets. most of all the same cheeseball track hasn't been playing on the site for over a year showing the world how out of sync it is.

you should understand that your website is your window to the world. the only thing you have out there other than the club itself that serves to represent everything you're about to everyone in the world 24/7/365. your customers and potential customers go there to scope the place out before deciding if they want to be there. it's clear that whoever is in charge of promoting it doesn't have any pride in his work.
