I admit it. In the late 90's, I used to be a hipster. Lived in what was considered on of the trendiest neighborhoods in the US-- Wicker Park, Chicago. At least the magazines said it was hip. I was marginally employed, had a boyfriend in three indie bands (one band was not enough for his talent), and was bored to death.
During that era I got high everyday, listened to obscure records, shopped at thrift stores, people watched, and bemoaned the overrunning of my neighborhood with yuppie types. The key to being a hipster is that you have to look down on somebody. Mostly I looked down on other hipsters and hated myself in a way.
I suppose the story has a happy ending... I quit drugging, broke up with the beautiful but alcoholic boyfriend, and moved to a place not remotely hipsterish...Philadelphia suburbs. When I mention U.S. Maple, Big Star or Modern Lovers, people say who? Instead of thrift stores, I pop into Old Navy b/c its more convenient. Go see movies like Iron Man instead of renting the latest Jim Jarmusch film. Rarely listen to bands live b/c I quit my 2 pack a day cigarette habit and I don't want to inhale second hand smoke.
Wow, I am living the dream as a former hipster. I think I'll drink some milk and go to bed early.

The best part about hipsters is that you can criticize them all you want, and they'd agree with you because it's ironic.

they spend all night trying to look as they just walked out of the house that way
it used to be people actually looked like that cause they were poor starving artists/actors/students or left wingers, now some guy/gal looks in the mirror, tips the hat the right way, has the glasses slightly off, and looks for the oldest pair of jeans possible

it is kind of nice though that you can throw on any old pair of clothes / an old t-shirt from your childhood/ gym shoes / old ass pair of jeans and it's considered fashionable. I haven't spent much money on clothes the past year and have been getting good use out of some older stuff and even way old clothes from my dad (extra points for vintage?)
but the kiddie sunglasses piss me off - that is a line i will not cross
