I've never heard of Boratto playing anything but his own works off ableton with a uc-33e. When was it?


As form the topic, as a wise young DJ of international acclaim once told me, the music you produce becomes your international business card for being able to sell yourself (and as consequence get good DJing gigs). It's just the way things are now, a means to an end.

The same person stressed that producing for DJs should not be looked at as "how am I gonna make something decent with my name on it so I can get more gigs" but "what kind of lasting contributions am I going to make to dance music beyond a few sets I played?"

Something to that effect anyway, and I like to think about it in that way...

I think that's a nice way of looking at it - but it still effectively says "Tough shit, you have to produce now too even if you don't want to, aren't good at it, and are a reasonably talented DJ."

That may be life, I still don't have to like it.

Yes, but was it simply talent that drew them away from the other thousands? It's kind of heard to believe it at times, I think a number of other things come into play as well.

The interesting thing is that back in the 90s you were famous for DJing and produced in your free time for fun.

Nowadays you have to produce in order to be a famous dj

I know in the states, when Howells started playing with Tenaglia at Vinyl/Arc, he got a lot of street cred really fast. The guy's talent really does shine. Plus he's a quite a showman in the booth from what I and other people have seen of him.

That's exactly where I see the problem. Boratto does a live PA with a laptop, then comes Sasha with the same gear and plays a DJ set. Where are we going to draw the line? Playing your own tracks only makes you a live act and playing other's tunes a DJ? How are the regular people going to recognize that? The word 'DJ' might completely lose it's original meaning.

Yes, a number of things that you will never know about. I believe the only people that could actually even sit here and talk about it would be those that were close to someone like Howells. Otherwise it is all merely speculation. Not saying that it doesn't cause great discussion though.

No, I've considered it, and haven't missed your point at all. I think your opinion (and it's prevalence) is exactly what's wrong with a lot of the music world, and don't care if millions of people share it - they're all wrong as far as I'm concerned.

It's the same shit mentality that has Soldier Boy selling millions of copies of the worlds shittiest rap song. Absolutely no difference.

Yeah. But I am interested in production. I think its a solid way of giving back to dance music and leaving something concrete behind after you hang up the cans.

I don't understand why it has to be that way.

And I always, always love it when it gets to the point where people talk down to me for being thoughtful about something I care about. If wanting to learn from others people is wrong, then I never want to be right.

I can't be blamed if there's nothing to be taken from DOOMBOT's contributions to this forum beyond having a prime example of how not to act.

I think the attitude is like some TA sat on the bus listening to your record and likes it ,your ad goes up at the nightclub and hes like damn right im going to that!

I think its more of a advert to your skills than a neccesity
