well normally, i stay away from this shit..but... what can i say, i love Toronto too much! but i kinda feel the need to dispell the weath illusion here...

making music alone, has been nothing but expensive. i mean, all the gear, software, space to do it in... etc. and thats just the tip of the iceberg really, because then you have the costs involved in getting that music out... production costs, management fees, paying your employees of course, legal fees (happens unfortunatley), not to mention the all around fees involved in just running a label... and thats just the music part... and i thought it was manageable... at least until the tour bits hit! man, you really need to dosh out.. conservatively i'd say 86% of your gross back into things like flights, hotels, logistics, shipping, booking agents cuts, a tour manager to accompany you and all his expensees... the list seems to go on forever.

i guess a good example for me would have been my show at the fillmore in NYC.... or WMC... hell, i walked out of that shit in debt!

but you know what, if wealth means... being able to create something, and have a self sustainable business, even if a profit margin is extremely minimal... AND everyones having fun... then fuck it. im having a great time then.

i cant say what the future holds for me, but if it puts me back on the ground to say this, im constantly worried about making "deadmau5" and mau5trap a self sustainable thing that will someday in the distant future give me the security and freedom we all have in life... which i still feel i am very far away from.

in fact, after this tour, ill be happy to break even... i've just taken out my first mortgage, and believe me when i tell you, im just as scared of it as any first time buyer.

and finally, im VERY proud to announce that after exploring many options, i've decided to call Toronto my permanent address!

nice reply Joel
Congratulations and power too you I wish you nothing but sucess

Just curious though
You mention having to pay for flights and hotels, yet every rider I have had to fullfill (and thats a lot of riders over the years for a lot of A list DJ's) has almost always included at the very least Business class flights in and out of town and 4 star or boutique hotel accomodation as well as Transport, meals or buyout , not to mention the backstage rider.
So here is the question, you are definately A list now so why are you paying for these yourself

most likely because he is trying to make himself accessible booking wise to maximize sales of his material as he plays nothing else. Many guys have done it before him, and trust me it takes more than a hit or 2 and a year of exposure to be a list. For once he is doing the smart thing.

Good question dude... also I've always wondered how do you get the job fulfilling artist's riders and what not. And what's the most ridiculous thing anyone has ask for?

And really good reply on deadmau5's part, it isn't all fun and games, there's still the financial side of things which a lot of people overlook.

at the risk of sounding stupid..what's a rider?

a buddy of mine that works at the guv gave me this thick document from
Freedom 07..it basically has all the requests..set ups..itineraries....etc...is that a rider...?

anyways, it's an interesting read..

That's exactly it.

Here's a site with a bunch of artist's riders.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/index.html

50 Cent's rider.

Jar of grape jelly
Jar of peanut butter
Box of Cuban cigars (Montecristo)
Bucket of fried chicken (KFC,Church's)
etc.

Though I know nothing of Joels contracts...

I deal with DJs and contracts on a regular basis. Normally these days clubs/promoters pay an "all in" fee that includes performance and airfare for the artist and tour manager/gear. It makes our lives easier to not have to deal with co-ordinating and paying for flights. such a pain in the ass. Most agencies have someone in house that deals with that sort of thing as well.

Hotel usually is taken care of by the promoter/club, but some talent offer a buy out. Same goes for food, but I've booked a couple of guys that take a per diem instead.

Ground transportation is normally taken care of by promoter/club

Rider at the club is taken care of by the club/promoter

Club sluts are free

Biggest rider I've had an artist give me was 9 pages!!

Hi Evan

i've also been dealing wih DJ contracts for about 20 years now but whose counting (fux showing my aga again)

To say that flights are normally included is not something i have dealt with
In the last couple of years i have had to buy way to many flights for dj's
and hotels.
Very often you have to book the flight using the travel company choosen by the DJ/agency thereby ensuring even more profit for them, so I guess I see where you are coming from with regards to an all in price, but it is always a plus on top of the fee regardless

well yes the fee will be a little higher if it's all in... and it's the same price in the end.. but less to worry about for the promoter.

This is the way everyone usually does it now, though I'm sure there is the odd exception.

I concur. Great insights. The same can be said about anything from tunes to butter. It takes money and time to create a brand...but in order to obtain long term financial security...brand creation is absolutely necessary. I also think it's quite awesome that one of the biggest producers in the world calls Toronto home. In Sasha's interview about Invol2er on the GU site he references Toronto as a place where "the best" music is coming out of. It was really cool to hear that. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he was probably referencing Deadmau5.
