No, they don't.

This happens once every few weeks - similar players, same story, every time.

Pretty much. Not even gonna bother this time.

Does this mean we should stop making interesting, half-intelligent threads and start making more "what flavour is your dick cheese?" threads instead?

So, the question is thus: would humanity be better or worse off if religion had never been established?

It would be worse off. And, I'm not saying this because I'm a pious follower of any religion (as I'm an atheist), but because religion is often unfairly criticised (and praised). We should step back for a moment and see what human life would be without religion.

Firstly, most forms of social arrangement would have probably failed right from the start. Religions have always been the pillars of most world views, as they knit societies together around some pricinciples that summarise what that society (or the people in that society) should be like. And, the most incredible thing about religion is that it adds a supernatural twist, so nothing is left unexplained and nothing can be disputed (although we know societies change and their religions adapt accordingly).

Being an atheist, I can imagine a society without religion quite easily. and I don't think this society would be a bad place to live at all. But, this would require all citizens to be extremely down to earth (i.e. they'd be content to see only what is there, and they would all find good reasons to live - and share their lives in harmony with others - based solely on this life.

As for the atrocities, it would be too simplistic to blame them solely on religion. What most critics fail to realise is that people actually believe that countries ~exist~ and that they're something worth dying for, for example.

I've been told the milk tastes like salty bleach... but I don't think I've ever had the curiosity of turning it into cheese to find out what it tastes like.

Brb, gotta find a girl who wants cheesebukkcake.

The world would have been way better off without Religion.. its so obvious. Im not talking about removing religion now because its 2 late. All religions where created a long time ago by pretty much the same people thats why they all have the same freagin story. It was made to control the masses and its still working.

Develop your argument, please. That should be interesting

It has been my firm belief that religion should only be discussed in the following circumstances:

a) among people of the same faith
b) to people who are not set in their beliefs and open-minded to a new faith
c) among people who enjoy arguing

If you firmly do not believe in anything, people who do believe in something will seem foolish (especially those who are passionate about their faith).

Religion is usually so deeply embedded in one's being that nothing else makes sense. You believe what you believe. I have a very hard time wrapping my head around the idea of "converting" (unless someone has a life altering experience or something).

Anyway, I find that religion is personal and private and preaching around about it is f*cking BS.

I think ~C~ refers to some (if not most) debaters in this thread

Not really. Personally, I've got lots of religious friends that I consider to be quite intelligent. As a matter of fact, one of my favourite authors is a hardcore Christian... I just happen to think his genius goes way beyond religion.

Lira, do you know John Lennon? Lennon once said `I'm an artist. You
give me a fuckin' tuba and I'll get you something out of it'. The point with John Lennon is a man can look at anything and make
something out of it. For instance,I look at you and I think what can
I use you for?

And how is that related to atheism, exactly?

(Edit: By the way, did you know Yoko Ono got John Lennon a Chinese ~companion~, namely May Fung Yee Pang? If that's what you get for playing a tuba, then I should have kept playing it back in high school )

It means that you should wake up every morning and say "When In rome..." five times in front of the mirror.

Posted by Moral Hazard on Sep-08-2008 18:58:

Whether or not the world would be better off had religion never existed (which is the only way a world without religion could exist, since once it developes it's omnipresent) is imposible for us to judge. Everything related to the human world is either a product of religion or has been shaped by religion. Without taking a position on the validity of any religion, any person with even a passing knowledge of anthropology and history must agree that without religion our world would be so different it would be unrecognisable.

and would probably be better off. Of course it's just wishful thinking.

Beat Blog,

what religion were you most familiar with growing up?

Posted by ZeJayMan on Sep-08-2008 23:38:

I just can't imagine a different set of circumstances without religion now.
