Agreed, that is my opinion of most techno, in general.

Does someone have his "Best Set Ever", or close to it so that I could have a listen?

I don't know if you will ever find anyone who will agree on a "Best Set Ever" since he has evolved and changed so much over the years that certain sets will appeal to certain people.

One of my favs is an old bangin set of his from 2002. His Essential mix from Sankey's. It is really hard to find but I got it from Bobby a few years ago. Will upload it and post the link.

Boooooooooo. Lol.

The reason being, is that I saw Richie at Guv a few years ago, and listened to some sets prior and I really wasn't feeling it. I realize my musical tastes have evolved quite a bit, so I figure I might as well re-acquaint myself with something above par.

(Edit: Spelling)

I also really respect what he did with that album. Not only did he have the CD mix, he also included an extended DVD mix, he put extra videos onto it, and was kind enough to include a high-quality version of the DVD mix in MP3 format.

The man really does embrace technology, and I have allot of respect for him for that.

Don't forget that the DVD mix is in Dolby or DTS 5.1 (can't remember which). That alone is enough to give mad respect too him because nobody else is doing it. I'm really disappointed Sasha didn't do Involv2er in 5.1 as well.

Having said that I can't really comment on Richie as a DJ because surprisingly; I've never had the chance to see him :O

Sure... my point was that if you're like "yo, give me his best set" you're already on the wrong path to understanding him.

Richie @ Sankey's Essential Mix 2002

I find Richie's sets now don't translate well to a recording. Examples being DEMF07 and his Minus party in Windsor.

I completely agree. It has to be heard live.

Posted by kaniz on Sep-12-2008 12:27:

Killer oldschool richie set, he plays hard for a good chunk of it, then goes into killer-headfuck minimal land for an hour or so, then back to more bangy-territory to end it off. The more minimal part is my favorite part of the set, and one of my all-around favorite minimal sets.

Richie Hawtin @ Even Further - 1998

part 1
part 2
part 3

I haven't seen him live but I've heard tons of sets, compilations etc by him and I wouldn't even put him in a category where I'd say he's number technically amazing even though I don't like his style like I would with Zabiela, Sasha etc.

If there's one guy who I'd give my vote to under your discription it's Hernan Catteneo. But hey, it's just my opinion.

I think he replaced picotto or someone else that night,,can't remember now, but what a fantastic last minute replacement that was!!

I'd say that's probably required to really understand what Richie is capable of!

Hmm, then I guess I need it broken down more clearly.

Is it the fact that he's on the cusp of the evolution of electronic music?

Is it his consistency (of being good) throughout time?

Or are the set recordings not doing his skills justice, as pointed out in the responses prior to this one?

If I can't make a judgment based on his sets/releases...then what is suggested that I base it on?

(These are not smart ass questions, they are legitimate talking points/queries)

[Edit: Thanks to those that posted sets so I can get a feel for it]

Holy shit. Just saw this video of his current DJ set up. I had no idea that DJ's were pushing the boundries of their craft in this direction. The timing, and management it must take to do all this on the fly is just amazing to think of.

His music may not be everybody's cup of tea, but you have to respect the man for truly giving a damn, and trying his best to create a unique and entertaining experience for those who have come out to hear him play.

the funniest part of this thread i find is comparing a guy who can lay down insane technical sets (hawtin) to a washed up has been that can barely pull a 15 second transition (vath).

i loved vath when i had seen him, but to make this comparison between the 2 must be from people who have seen either lol. Vath is for the trance fans that switched to techno but still like antics in the booth. Jesus pose withdrawl imo.
