TELUS jumping on the 4G bus; 2010 launch

High-speed hungry Canadians will soon have a new option when seeking out a wireless carrier. This morning, TELUS officially announced its plans to get rolling on a 4G network with a target launch sometime in early 2010. Thats right people, our pals north of the border will be feasting on 4G data in just over a year while were probably still angry that all the iPhone 3Gs out there are dropping throughput to EDGE-like speeds. TELUS CEO snippet time:
This technology evolution is a win for Canadian consumers. TELUS investment in next generation wireless services will give our clients more wireless functionality including; international roaming, fast network speeds and a compelling selection of globally-compatible handsets and devices. As the next evolution in our multi-network strategy, this initiative will position TELUS to actively participate in the future global LTE eco-system and leverage economies of scale, offer timely access to handsets, and enhance global roaming relationships and revenues.
Through a revised agreement with Bell, TELUS will be using the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz spectrum and both Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei will be providing the LTE gear. The entire project is expected to run TELUS about $750 million.
I can't wait to proudly say FUCK ROGERS.
Sweeeeeeet.

So I just spoke to someone from Telus.
Apparently the Storm is going to be quite pricey. It's a world phone, plus it's their new baby. The person I spoke to is saying the price point will be more than the 8830 world edition.. snap.
right now the 8830's price points are:
3 year/ $299
2 year/ $549
1 year/ $599
no contract/ $649
I'm probably still going to get the thing, but man..
Ok so i got the scoop from my boyfriend who works for telus corporate.
the device is a cdma/quad band gsm device, so yes you can travel with it internationaly.
telus will be the only carrier with this device in canada. verizon in the states.
will be available very soon, but at a hefty price.

The Blackberry Storm 9500 will be sold through Vodafone networks and will be free on monthly plans of 35 GBP and up with an 18-month contract. The Blackberry Storm 9530 is the variant of the handset that will be sold in North America. Along with the quad-band GSM and 2100Mhz UMTS support that the 9500 model has, it will also offer CDMA2000 1xEV-DO support. |

Uses CDMA in North America, but comes with a SIM Card for GSM usage for the rest of the world. They are locked to not work on domestic GSM providers (either via frequency or via network locking). |

Here's a nice lil' linky from my fav site - click me!
I'm not sold just yet...sexy, yes, but I'm thinking Bold at this point. My contract has four months left on it before I escape Verizon (CDMA, and the only Storm svc provider in the states) for AT&T (all the cool phones, and the only iPhone svc provider in the states -- they're getting the Bold very soon as well).

Feel free to throw in an extra "." now and then
Great info, but tell me something. Now I've never really done the smartphone/geek phone thing to a large extent. I've had my Black Moto Q for close to 2 years now, but Verizon's data plans are horrendous so I've avoided them.
Regardless, I hear a lot of people saying that you don't need WiFi with VZW's sick EVDO network. Does that ever limit one in any way to a phone that does use WiFi, as the CDMA Storm I've learned will not?
