been there, done that

then again, who knows ... when it's an actual rave the rules are a lot more flexible. the time I played hardcore acid to open the show, I was fully planning to play minimal, but there was this one kid totally ready to freak out ...

Because it's preferable to have a dancefloor filled with living, breathing people as opposed to a mass suicide...

it doesn't work in the vast majority of cases. if you have enough drugged up clueless retards it might work

problem is, people need to be seduced, or they will get tired early and leave and ruin the vibe later in the party.

you want to keep people in anticipation and keep working them until you peak them and the payoff is much better, and then it becomes something more than just a cheap night out to dance

Seduction & Anticipation, two very big keywords for whenever i get chance to play out as warm up.

From experience, the majority of people who come out to gigs in this part of the world, are just looking for some EDM to party to. Doesnt matter so much to them about headliner or popularity, just good grooves. It probably helps if you are playing to a knowledgable crowd, who don't mind hearing the current tech-house/minimal styles before having a boogie.

I'll take my regular tracks in my playlist, and just drop them a bit slower - i play all kinds of house & techno with the odd prog classic, less people are drunk (or high) at the start of the night, so some precise mixing is a must. I tend to keep it lowkey for first hour, while people arrive and have a chat... but as the party develops, its obviously within my interest to set up the night for the guys playing after me - if thats keeping it flat on one level, or stepping up a few gears to play quicker or more melodic so be it.

It's one thing to be known by a particular crowd as that "boring minimal dude" but what if the other local jocks have that impression of you too? I'd prefer to be known as the guy who can do a job, play slow(er) when called upon, but can still rock it for 30-40 minutes before the other local DJs take over. It leads to more work for me, when they get impressed.

The thing i hate is warmup jocks who play only 1 style of music. If this is the music for the club to get in the right atmosphere for a headliner, it needs to be something that maintains interest - to seduce the crowd into wanting more - - what hopefully the headliner is going to give them!
