Originally posted by quyntarious See, that's what I am talking about. I DJ for myself, and I know it. I don't like to play out unless it's in an environment conducive to dance music. However there are many people I know who think "Oh, he's a DJ, he should play here," who just don't get that being a DJ doesn't necessarily mean I am doing it for the money, I am doing it for the love of the music. I am starting to tolerate Top 40 stuff more and more, but how on Earth does one go about mixing it? I presume mixing isn't really a necessity because the average top 40 lover doesn't care about mixing. And yes, I would suck her nipples.

You can get funky with top 40 but instead of the normal tricks its more dropping accapellas over another top 40 beat and subtle hints.
Albeit iPods cant beatmatch and pick the right song to go into next...
But yea for any top 40 crowd your pretty much just whatever is on the radio right now with a few throwbacks sprinkled here and there
If you buy two copies of the same record they usually come with an instrumental, and this way you can extend it long enough to mix out of.
I make sure I always get two copies of the same record for this reason.
you could also just rap yourself which is not that hard. Just make a violent grocery list and say it with angry hand gestures/

are there any hip hop/top 40/ record pools etc? where are most of these DJs finding their music?
If you're using CDs, a place like a Plan 9 Music will have some weekly/monthly compilation called X-Mix (or something close). It has the latest top hits plus their bpms.

Originally posted by Imu it's not that simple. where I go for example, the EDM scene is dead. If there is an EDM scene it consists of bad house (calabria, rise up, world hold on), sickening electro-glitch, or cascada (and maybe some daft punk). And yeah, the only consolation is that you're getting experience on the dancefloor.
i know about elevate...i've DJd there before...and yeah ur right the resident there is a ridiculous DJ...but even there u find him having to play cheesy house...though he does mix stuff up really well! I'll try check out Grand...but elevate is closer (hehe)...so if ur ever in new haven let me know!!!

Originally posted by spdandpwr Imu, I wouldn't be so quick to say its dead...go to Elevate in New Haven (inside Alchemy), that club is always playing house music. In Stamford, CT, there is GRAND, which always plays house. In fact, if you want, I could go with you; I am always up for meeting new TA's and I get cheap drinks at GRAND.
try "girl talk" their albums have a lot of interesting mash ups between edm and hip hop i think their tracks are a perfect way to lead one into another
