just 2 years ahead.. circa 1994..
I'm 30 years old now. I grew up listening all types of electronic music in the 80s from synthpop (Depeche Mode (my fave band of all time), Cetu Javu, Erasure, Red Flag, Pet Shop Boys etc.) to Italo Disco or Asian New Wave (Den Harrow, Savage, Gazebo, Modern Talking, Bad Boys Blue) to New Beat (Robotiko Rejekto, Public Relations, Moskwa TV) and in the 90s I got into freestlye (Stevie B, Johnny O, Noel, Information Society) and Eurodance (Fun Factory, 2Unlimited, Captain Hollywood Project) and also industrial dance/EBM (Front 242, A Split Second, Apoptygma Berzerk, VNV Nation). So it wasn't a hard transition to get into trance and other edm styles in early 2000. First clubbing experience was Gabriel & Dresden at 1015 in I believe 2003 or 2004.
Im 22 and I have been listening EDM since '99 back in Peru. Djs: Oakenfold, sandra collins, hernan cattaneo, slacker, three, dave ralph, mauro picotto. My first party was in 2001 with Mauro Picotto, Voyager and Luke Brancaccio in Peru.

Started out buying "Techno" CD's from the Asian Garden Mall back in 96ish....I finally turned 18 and went to my first club that played "Happy Hardcore" in '98 at a club in Irvine called Metropolis.....Unfortunately they closed Metropolis down...Then started going out to the FunHaus on Thursday nights at the Circus...Didn't pop my first candy until '99 (Nordic Trac days) at Masterdome...I definitely miss those dance battles at Masterdome and MASSIVES from '99 to early '00s....I'm now 28 and still following edm closely but not going out as much anymore....

we must've listened to that tape like 100 times the very first week, it was so new, so different, especially since Gangsta Rap had just become the hottest thing @ the time. i was instantly hooked, in the early 90's i went to some raves, but no parties. i remember going to the DMC record store on Melrose, hearing DJ's spinning sick ass House on the patio & thinking to myself "wow, this is so amazing"
Danny Tenaglia's "Mix This Pussy", Keoki's 1st album "Journey's By DJ" & Junior Vasquez' "Future Sound Of New York" were instant classics for me, those were the last Mix CD's i listened to for a long, long time since i enrolled in college in the fall of 94 (@ 19) & put EDM on the back burner
i did nothing but HH for 10yrs straight until one glorious weekend back in Apr 2005. was planning a bday wknd in Vegas & invited my ex gf w/a bunch of friends to go. my ex said "hey, since we're gona be in Vegas, do u wanna roll?" i said "what's that?" "roll, take x" i said "we're gona be in Vegas, why not?"
so of all places we go to Body English & DJ AM is spinning. now granted he wasnt playing House, but the mash-ups that night were good & it was my first time. but the craziest thing happened, it was like a light bulb went off, somehow, someway, i became subconsciously drawn back to House. so before the wknd was over i knew what i had to do... dump HH & head over to Avalon
so the next wknd rolls around (4.16.05) & all my HH friends are calling me to go out, i had to tell them that i wouldnt be going w/them for a while and when they asked why, i told them "that i was going back to House" so i went to Avalon by myself, dropped again, seen Hybrid spin a wicked wicked set & met a grip of cool peeps who are still my friends to this day
ive never looked back, becoming more obsessed & more passionate about the scene ever since...
In the scene about 7 years, when I started I was an event planner for a mayor company while attending school, left that, fell in love with the music, and have been treated like shit ever since(LOL). I would not change a thing cuz I've learned powerful lessons that will stay with me till the day I die, I believe everything happens for a reason and the love for this music has honestly shown me the goodness and the evil in people and has given me hope in some really dark moments in the past 6 months.
I'm 24 and grew up in Houston. I started listening to electronic music on MTV in 8th grade with friends from school, which got the sounds into my ear but I didn't get really into it until a couple years later. When I was 17 (2001) I was re-introduced to late-90's trance by a friend and loved it. Independently I started liking breaks but none of my friends shared my enthusiasm, and there is no breaks scene I know of in Houston. My first show was Sasha & Digweed's Delta Heavy show. I was still underage at the time (all age event) but once I turned 18 I started going to Hyperia, which was simultaneously the best club (best sound, music, and people) and the only 18+ club that played electronic music in town. until they closed 3 months after my birthday. Around that time I bought technics and a mixer and started bedroom DJ'ing progressive house. Then after high school I disappeared from the scene almost entirely for the 2 years I spent at the US Naval Academy trying to become a fighter pilot. An injury put an end to that, and military life wasn't for me anyway.
Spent a year back in Houston, which is one of the least happening cities on the planet. There is never more than 1 venue at a time that promotes famous electronic acts (and it is never a good venue) and attaching the word "talent" to any of the locals I've heard (except Randall Jones) would be a huge mistake. If you do go out, the crowds are incredibly uptight and basically nobody dances. Started spinning tech house and techno around the end of that year.
I've been living in Palo Alto, CA for two and a half years now, consider San Francisco my real home, and I'm a burner. Got fed up with mainstream trance/prog clubbing very quickly and started going to undergrounds and breaks parties. Started hanging out with burners about a year and a half ago, went to burning man for the first time this year and it was the best experience of my life. I'm a burner now and that's my scene. And now I'm spinning breaks.
Haven't been in the EDM scene for too long, I was debating whether or not I should give myself a try on this, since everyone seems to have years and years of experience, but I'll give it a shot.
So here's my newbie experience of EDM

I honestly got into EDM scene last year July 07, I was more into hiphop and r&b before that. Just like everyone else who doesn't listen to EDM, I used to say "all trance music sounds the same"... A few years back I wasn't able to tell between house or trance, and for me everything sounded just like *boom boom boom boom*.
I've gone to raves in the past but wasn't really listening to the music, mostly to hang out with the others. Went to Armin Only last year, had fun, but yet didn't fully understand the true art of Electronic Dance Music. I remember at one point, Armin played Filo&Peri - Anthem and everyone was just singing along, but that was just it.
Finally went again to Nocturnal, and that's when I really fell in love with EDM. For some reason, I really liked Chemical Brothers and Sharam (Deep Dish) DJs set (even though they are not really my style), so I went home from Nocturnal and downloaded their songs.
So I finally bought my first turntables last December (after 2 weeks of DJ-training via MSN Messenger with Mecca), and threw my first house party a week later. From there on, I just LOVE EDM, addicted to it, and it has become a daily necessity for me to listen to it every single day.
This year has been awesome, countless houseparties, and few gigs... including my first gig at Circus, BIG thanks to Trinity I know I'm still nothing comparing to others right now, but I'm striving to improve, and all that for only one cause: to SHARE what I think good music with others, esp. those who still haven't been exposed to EDM scene.
I fell in love not just for the music, but also the EDM community just like TranceAddict I think EDM should be the universal language of all music, dance... music.. dance
And I should stop before I start writing an autobiography hehe
I just turned 21 this year but I've been listening to EDM since I was the tender age of 9-10 years old... from going to neighborhood parties, I would hear the gabber/hardcore that managed to make its way across the Atlantic and over here. In those times, its also important to note that what seemed to be the mainstream (to me at least) was gabber and was going through a change (1995/1996) into the "trance" that influenced the 'golden era' of the 1998 bigroom/uplifting bombs that have brought so many into the scene. I was hooked when I listened to those records and found that the genre (at the time) had no rules whatsoever. What really brought me into the genre was the Forbidden Paradise compilation CDs (given to me by a friend) who would eventually be mixed by the founders of Black Hole Recordings, in DJ Tiesto and Arny Bink. The first 2 CDs of that series were gabber and the 3rd, a mixture of "trance" and gabber got me hooked into those new sounds.
It was until the 8th and 10th CDs of that series where I had an affinity to "trance" in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Since then, I've made my rounds over places and have seen the progression (today at least) from trance into progressive house, electro, minimal, and many other influences. Its obvious that the genre barrier has been broken but alot of the stuff today is CRAP compared to what once was from the earliest foundation of the "trance" genre. I feel bad for those fans when the 'digital era' took over circa 2003-2004 and A&B, AvB brought in many fans through the internet. They fail to see the quality in trance releases as after 2005, I have been highly disappointed with the releases. The quality standards have been set soooo low that people really need to look to the past and see what true "quality" is.
I used to listen to pirate radio here in LA and of course the famous and now defunct MARS 103.1 radio that used to exist here and play the only sliver of EDM at the time. There was also the internet in those days when Napster was at its prime (used to take me sometimes MONTHS to download full, compliation CDs) and also when there was no "continuation-download" that was invented... if I didn't finish a DL on the first run, I would lose what I had downloaded from the start) and of course the shitty 28.8 and 56k connections as well! Power Tools on 105.9 KPWR exists today and one of the DJs Swedish Egil used to be part of the MARS FM team... that guy is a legend and shame that not many people from here know about him. Hes been DJing at Nikita apparently and you can catch him live on Power Tools Saturday Nights/Sunday mornings 2-4 if I'm not mistaken with Richard Humpty Vission.
Since then, I've made so many friends in the EDM world but FEW were there around the early 90s when the EDM genre was peaking and divulged into all the great styles we know today (house, electro, trance, minimal, progressive) Its amazing to think what will happen in another 10 years as the situation is all too familiar to me now but I've been to my share of events so far (going across the world to get to events with no age restriction or 18+) but I got my fizzake idizzle and was able to see alot of the DJs when they were in their prime and not the "shit sets and performance for dump trucks of money" that exists today with some of the people in the scene (sadly others set their bar of "quality" at this level). I've also been able to play alongside some of the biggest names in the genre (thanks to friends I have met) and would love to meet the others in the scene from my timeframe and also those who can tell me more about what it was like in the past! I'm 28, got into things heavily in '99 (what a year for EDM!).
Wasn't interested in raving (at least state-side) and went to a handful of events when I turned 21. However in 2002, I was stoked to go to Europe to experience club life (especially in Munich and Berlin) and also went to Sensation (first year for white/black) and Loveparade in Berlin. The experiences were life changing. For years I was disappointed with clubs and events state-side, due to this, but it has gotten a lot better over the last couple of years.
I'm 23, and my first ever event was back in 2000 when I was still 14 for Metropolis @ the Santa Clara Fairgrounds.
Then went to Funky Tekno Tribe's Tribal Massive at Bill Graham later that year to celebrate my 15th birthday...
I used to be more of a House Head and listened to DJ Dan, Farina, Jeno & Garth... (but listened to Trance like Mars & Mystre & uhhh... DJ Mystik haha)
And what moved me over to trance for good was Metropolis 2002 (the one in the 3Com Park parking lot) when I saw Deepsky annihilate the main room/tent.
And also going to the Trance room/tent and hearing I think Mars & Mystre drop PPK - Resurrection for the first time at a massive. Mind f-in blown..... Hahaha
I still have the first Trance CD I ever bought: Paul Oakenfold's Tranceport ....
And also Star Guitar galvanized my love for edm in general

@americanwildchild - we need to talk dude. When I got in to it, it was all just house and even later, dance music. "Trance" was this wierd thing played on beaches in southern india, that now I hear called psytrance lol 
The labels of Prog and electro didn't exist, nor did tech house and I too had that change from hardcore to "house" in those years leading up to 98 and beyond.
BTW, Sedish egil is on Sirius radio channel 38 at least once a week (repaeated several times throughout) so if you need your fix, get it going at least in your car!
@skizzel - it's funny that you say that: I too lost my will for the clubs, but a part still kept with the music and in the last year especially, something positive has changed with the music and scenes (both here and in Europe).
It would be great to hear the tapes or sets that got people in to EDM ......post those links.......

Been moving all weekend so I missed out on this thread. Gotta get in on it.
I'm 28. Got into the music in 92. Use to go to the swap meet and get mixtapes from this a stand in there. Anyone remember "James Brown Is Dead?" Old school hard house. Also use to pick up the Beatstreet magzine mixes. Techo-retro-disco tapes and cds. Can't remember the name of the first ever cd I bought but it had tracks like "Baloonyloon(sp)" and "Nitrous Oxide." In 96 my cousin came from NY to stay with us for a while. He was well infused in the scene there and came with a shitload of underground techno tapes and cds. Stuff his friends had done which inluded Franky Bones & Adam X. Had some crazy shit done with 4 turntables and filtered through a PA system. Kinda Made it sound like it was underwater.
Started going to raves in Jan of 99. Loved all the local trance djs of course. Thee-0, Doran, CL, Eyol, Taylor, Ganesh, and although he wasn't local...Kimbal Collins. Started promoting a few raves. Worked with ROAM (Ravers On A Mission) if you remember them. Anyone remember the Reseda Roller Rink? That was pre Masterdome.
But what really changed my life was the Global Underground cd series. 2 Mixes imparticular: John Digweed - Sydney and Sasha - San Fransisco. That's what made me want DJ. Got my turntables right before NYE 2000 and bought my first mixer from Nicholas Bennison. A Vestax PMC 17a.
So 2002 I got into club and event promo. Started with Earthdance and Monday Social. Then got involved with Giant and the rest is history. Since then I've been out about 4 nights a week and have scene every DJ I could ever dream to see and played some pretty great gigs. Now I just have to see them in other parts of the world. Oh...and hopefully play some other parts of the world too

My older brother and some of my cousins would sometimes play some of Paul Oakenfold's music and I would ask them "what the f**k are you guys listening to...??!!" But after awhile I finally took the time to listen to it and came to like it. It was in 2002 when I actually really got into it though. I'm 21 now. My very first rave that I went to was Independance when PVD, Mauro Picotto, Eric Morillo, and I think Steve Angello was there.
